Grunge Typography

The MovementThe begining

Thought to be started around late 80’s but was more prominate in the 1990’s

The structure was very similar to the DADA art movement because of its rejection to mainstream design.

Thought to be fathered by David Carson

The MovementAbout

Rejected typical type layouts and played with non-mainstream techniques to achieve different results.

Adding “aged effects” was an attempt to make your designs feel less digital and more realistic and natural.

The idea behind this was to try to bring a more natural handmade element back into design that they thought had been lost.

Easiest way to pick out these designs was by the dirt, stains, spills and splatters that symbolized the underground and alternative design sense.

Connected with the alternative culture, music, skateboarding, surfing

Biography

He was born on September 8, 1952 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He traveled with his dad and was inpacted by what he saw in the world.

At a very young age his talent was noticed.

His first actual contact with graphic design was made in 1980 at the University of Arizona on a two week graphics course.

After that he decided that he wanted to stick with this profession

He attended San Diego State University as well as Or-egon College of Commercial Art.

This is where he met his first great influence, who also Hans-Rudolf Lutz.

About

He largely influenced the dirty-grunge movement in de-sign trends of the 90s

His work became well-known in the late 80s and early 90s through skateboarding and surfing magazines

He was recently named one of the top five most influen-tial designers by Graphic Design USA magazine.

He started Ray Gun Magazine, a lifestyle and music magazine, and went on to start his own design firm, Da-vid Carson Design

Since then he has traveled all around the world but has maintained New York as his base of operations.

Awards

He won over 170 Awards for his work in graphic design.

Some of the more noteable ones include:

Cover of the Year, Society of Publication Designers in New York.Award of Best Use of Photography in Graphic DesignDesigner of the Year 1998, International Center of Pho-tographyDesigner of the Year 1999, International Center of Pho-tographyMaster of Typography, Graphics magazine (NY)The most famous graphic designer on the planet, April 2004 - London Creative Review magazine (London)

The magazine was founded in 1992 in California and led by the work of David Carson.

He served as the Art Director for first three years of its career, which lasted 8 years and over 70 issues.

The experiments by Carson and other Ray Gun designers were chaotic, abstract and distinctive, but sometimes illegible.

The magazine’s radical subject matter often related to music and pop culture icons and the magazine became a reliable source for the prediction of up-and-coming stars.

Carson’s new direction into design targeted at youth brought him into the eyes of corporate America even though that is the oppo-site of what the magazine was created for.

The Magazine ended in 2000.

Other NoteablesHouse Industries

Crackhouse

Created in 1993 and became popular in 1995.

It was created by Jeremy Dean.

It was created by rubbing down a Letraset sans serif typeface and then repeatedly lifting up the sheet several times so that the letters “cracked.”

This was created for the Grunge movement as it created a handmade more natural feel even if it is over the top.

House industries also came out with Condemdhouse, Burnthouse, Badhouse Light and bold, Poorhouse, Openhouse, Housearrest, Dirtyhouse.
