Hispanic refers to anything or anyone that comes from a Spanish speaking country, whereas Latino or Latin American, refers strictly to anyone or anything that comes from the areas of Mexico, Central America, South America, or descends from such. 2. How many Hispanic countries are there? 20 countries and Puerto Rico (US territory) 3. Approx. how many people worldwide speak Spanish? 425 million, that’s more than English at 400 million. 4. Who was the first Hispanic American to serve in Congress? Joseph Marion Hernandez in 1822. 5. When did observance of Hispanic Heritage begin? In 1988 by Ronald Regan. 6. When is Mexico’s day of Independence? September 16. Famous Figures 1. Miguel Hidalgo (1735-1811)[Mexican] A priest who started the Mexican revolution against the Spanish. He was captured and executed in 1811 which spurred the Mexicans to final freedom in 1821. 2. Jose de San Martin (1778-1850)[Argentine] The Protector of the South. Famous for leading most of South America to freedom in the fight for independence from Spain. 3. Che Guevara (1928-1967)[Argentine]Most known for his military, political and guerrilla warfare. He was a Marxist revolutionary that fought for freedom in multiple countries including Argentina, Cuba, and Bolivia. “I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man.”

5. Jose Dolores Estrada Vado (1792-1869) [Nicaraguan] National hero for his victory at the Battle of Hacienda San Jacinto in 1856.

6. Sofia Mulanovich (1983-) [Peruvian] The first Peruvian surfer to win an Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event. And the 1st South American to ever win the World Title. She is ethnically Croatian.

Cake Ingredients (serves 10-12)

Cake: 9 eggs, 1 cup of sugar, 1 tbl vanilla, 2 cups of flour

Sauce: 14 oz can La Lechera sweetened condensed milk, 12 oz can evaporated milk, 1 cup milk, 1 tbl vanilla

Topping: 2 cups heavy whipping cream, ¼ cup confectioner’s sugar, 1 container of strawberries (cut them)
