The Expo Centre Sharjah has achieved unprecedented successes and accomplishments during the year 2013 that has put it on the right path as a favorite exhibition ground and a top destination in the region for world renowned companies and exhibitors to showcase and market their well known products in the UAE markets. The number of the visitors from the UAE and the GCC states to the centre during the past year was 600,000.

All exhibitors who participate in the exhibitions and events at the Expo Centre are taking advantage of the good results including achieving good profits, conducting bargains with other participating companies as well as sustaining a good networking among the participants.

Last year, the centre witnessed specific development in the performance of the fairs and events held as the number of the visitors has hiked, exhibition areas enlarged and number of participants has increased. The successful developments of the Centre, expansions and renovations carried out were within the line of the guidance and directions of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah who is looking forward to make the Emirate of Sharjah a vital hub for the exhibition industry in the UAE. His Highness is supporting the Centre, enabling it to sustain the leadership of Sharjah in this domain.

The management of the Expo Centre Sharjah is keen to develop its working systems within the great advancement witnessed by the exhibition industry in the country which will lead to host more fairs and events on the basis of selecting the right exhibition needed by the public.

The past years marked the trend of the Centre in the systems and types of fairs hosted by it. The number of specialized exhibitions has increased as the plan of the Center is to attract new fairs that were not seen before in the Middle East and focusing on small and middle scale fairs of public welfare. The strategy of the centre is to conduct general and consumer related exhibitions in new state-of-art styles to cover the requirements of all segments of the community and to activate marketing and tourism in Sharjah. The centre has an overall programme that allows it to host and organize international and local meetings such as conferences and sessions which are within the frame of the considerations set out by the Emirate of Sharjah in particular and the UAE in general to promote Sharjah regionally in this regard.

Other main strategic Approaches of the Expo Centre Sharjah are: hosting more solo exhibitions for foreign countries; encouraging and facilitating the participations of the private sector in exhibitions and events of the centre; focusing on cultural, scientific, environment and artistic exhibitions by

strengthening cooperation between the centre and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the one hand, and the concerned government agencies on the other.

The Expo centre Sharjah also set-up a promotion and marketing plan and determined its means of execution on local and regional levels. To that end, advertising and promotion campaigns were launched in the UAE and abroad.

The year 2013 was a recognized and successful year in performance of exhibitions conducted in the Expo centre Sharjah. All objectives for 2013 have been fulfilled according to its plans and programmes. The centre has held 24 specific exhibitions and events which provided great opportunities to the exhibitors and were much welcomed by the visitors as these fairs fulfilled their demands and aspirations.

These achievements were not possible without the grace of God and the support of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and His Highnes Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler and the Crown Prince of Sharjah in addition to the vital role of H.E. His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Inaugurates IGCF 2014

Ruler of Sharjah calls on media to restore the spirit of humanity in people

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the International Government Communication Forum 2014 (IGCF 2014).

Delivering the opening speech, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi said: “The Arab world today stands at a critical phase in time. Things are changing at a rapid speed. The regional landscape is a state of flux - making it difficult to differentiate right from wrong. We see the enlightened moving towards darkness. Honesty is being taken over by falsehood. The virtuous are being forced to surrender to baser desires. And, thought leaders appear lost between fact and fiction, except for the few that have been spared by the Almighty.”

His Highness continued: “The question is: Where is the media in this chaotic landscape and what is its role here? Propaganda, dissemination of false news to mislead the public, validation of sources of information, and respect for privacy - all of these are serious components in the world of journalism that need to be handled sensitively. A media professional must respect the reader or listener, public interest, and people’s right to information. He must demonstrate ethics in reporting the truth with accuracy, integrity and fairness. On their part, media professionals have rights that should be guaranteed by the law, including the freedom of expression, the right to criticise, the freedom of access to all sources of information, and the freedom to investigate without interfering in confidential public or private affairs, unless of course, the exception is clearly justified.”

Concluding his speech, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi stressed on the fact that “It is more necessary than ever today to restore the spirit of humanity in people, and inculcate in them moral and cultural values. Media organisations must remain vigilant and approachable, uphold work and moral values, and help create a world that that safeguards public harmony.

Deputy Ruler of Sharjah Concludes IGCF

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, witnessed the conclusion ceremony of the second International Government Communication Forum(IGCF) 2014.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qasimi, brought the curtains down on the International Government

Communication Forum 2014 (IGCF 2014) at a gala dinner that was organized at Expo Centre Sharjah.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah honoured the speakers, moderators and sponsors of IGCF 2014 for their role in the success of the third Government Communication Forum and for their role in the media coverage of the forum and enriching dialogues.

In his concluding speech, His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Centre (SMC) and Head of Organizing Committee of IGCF, said: “We close yet another successful edition of the government communication forum, which began three years ago and has transformed into an international event with a truly global mandate this year. The IGCF story tells of how a local initiative launched by Sharjah Media Centre to strengthen and develop communication mechanisms between various government departments and institutions in the emirate of Sharjah has expanded in scope to become a global event of reckoning.”

“Today at the conclusion of the third year, we can safely say that the International Government Communication Forum is a truly world-class event. We at SMC would like to thank you all for the parts you played in writing this success story over the last few days. I am particularly thankful for the one-on-one discussions that I had the privilege to participate in with most of you” He added.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi concluded: “You have enriched the forum by sharing inspirational international communication stories. You also shared actual case studies of governments that lost out for not demonstrating the flexibility, knowledge or speed required to keep up with this rapidly changing world. The digital revolution is still forcing all sectors, without exception, to search for more responsive, transparent and open communication mechanisms.’ Osama Samra, Director of SMC, thanked participants and media representatives for contributing to IGCF 2014. He also acknowledged all the government departments, companies and media organizations that supported the forum as sponsors, including Sky News Arabia, AGMC (BMW), Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Associated Press, Thomson Foundation, Al Khaleej Newspaper, Sharjah Media Corporation, and Tim Hortons.

Partner to boost cooperation

The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) and the National US Arab Chamber of Commerce, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening investment and commercial cooperation between the Sharjah and the US and developing mutual economic relations, with the goal of promoting investment and enhancing exports and exchange of visits by trade delegations.

The MoU was signed by Shaikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of (Shurooq), and Amin Salam, Vice President of the National US Arab Chamber of Commerce, in the presence of a number of officials from Shurooq.

The agreement makes provision for the expansion of business networks and opportunities between Sharjah and the U.S.A., and encourages the smooth flow of economic information, statistics and business data to facilitate trade contracts and activate joint venture projects.

It also stipulates the participation of each party in trade shows and conferences organised by the other, overcoming obstacles facing the growth of investments and businesses, encouraging bilateral investments, and exchanging expertise and training.

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi highlighted the deep-rooted economic and diplomatic relations between the UAE and the U.S.A., saying: “The UAE enjoys excellent relations with the U.S.A., and there is a great deal of cooperation between the two nations in a number of areas. Bilateral ties are also continually expanding with growing economic, cultural and artistic exchange. American entities have had an effective and successful presence in Sharjah for a long time, and we are keen to forge channels of communication with influential investment parties in order to drive our bilateral cooperation forward in various fields, and to ensure broader collaboration in the future.”

Sheikha Bodour added, “Sharjah has, since the 1960s, been an attractive business, tourism and cultural destination in the Gulf region. Shurooq is seeking, in collaboration with local and international organisations, to further consolidate the emirate’s position in the region and the globe.” She emphasised that: “Sharjah is an ideal hub for investment in the Middle East thanks to its strategic location which offers direct access to the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, its incentive and flexible legislative structure, its state-of-the art facilities and sophisticated logistics infrastructure, as well as its friendly investment environment and its cultural, educational and artistic offerings.”

Shurooq’s Chairperson also pointed out that the MoU comes as a direct result of the Roadshow in the U.S.A. that was organised by Shurooq last month, and believes that the agreement will contribute to boosting Sharjah’s position as a regional hub for US investments in the Middle East and attracting U.S. companies to regional markets. “It will also enhance the Sharjah’s status as a leading destination for business and investment, driven by the safe haven reputation boasted by the UAE, its investment legislation, and its modern sea- and airports that contribute to facilitating and speeding up the procedures for the exchange of goods between the two countries.”

She went on to say that the newly signed agreement with the US Arab Chamber of Commerce will serve as a new and effective channel of communication to foster partnership opportunities

between Sharjah and the U.S.A., to achieve common goals, and to explore investment opportunities in vital sectors such as tourism, healthcare, logistics and the environment. In addition, it could lead to development of various other means of cooperation.

For his part, Salam expressed his delight at the signing of the MoU, stating that it will help strengthen economic and trade cooperation between the UAE and the U.S.A. and open up broader avenues for US partnerships and economic expansions in the region via Sharjah. He noted that the recent Sharjah Roadshow in the U.S.A. revealed the various investment opportunities and significant facilities for investors.

Salam commended the high-level relations between the U.S.A. and the UAE, emphasising that the MoU will work towards further developing these relations by encouraging investors in both countries to learn more about the outstanding investment opportunities available, and by providing the best possible facilities to help foster relations between corporate and commercial entities in the two friendly countries. He referred, specifically, to the desire of American investors to open up new business markets and inject core investments into countries offering outstanding facilities.

The recent Sharjah Roadshow in the United States has concluded over 300 meetings during the roadshow in Washington DC and New York with commercial and investment firms, investors and authorities and promoted Sharjah as a vital economic, tourism and cultural destination in the region and successfully had highlighted the most important attraction elements of the Emirates and the available investment opportunities.

Established in 2009, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) is adopting of the best standards in providing services to attract investors from the region and around the world, providing the best possible facilities and incentives and help overcome any obstacles facing investment activities within Sharjah.

The total value of trade between the UAE and the US rose by 12.5 per cent in the first nine months of last year, to $20,56 billion (Dh75.46 billion), compared with $18.27 billion (Dh67.05 billion) in the first nine months in 2012 — a strong growth that reflects the desire of both countries to further expand their bilateral relations.

between people and tribes. We will work to add this area of rich heritage to the list of World Heritage Sites to introduce the significant value of the UAE’s history to the world”.

The Heart of Sharjah is located in the old part of the Emirate of Sharjah.

According to historical sources, this location contributed to the development of trade. Al Edrissy – an 11th century geographer – stated that there was a port in the existing location of Sharjah.

Sharjah contains two components that have often characterized the existence of settlements in the Arabian Gulf. First, it is located in protected entrance of the sea, locally called ‘Al Khor’.

Second, fresh water exists at relatively shallow depth.

Historical sources show that as early as 1756 AD there were three locations on the coast between Al Katif (Qutif in Saudi Arabia) and Sir (Ras Al Khaima), which are Al Ajir, Qatar and Sharjah.

These locations contained few residences from which the Basrah dates and rice were brought to the Arabs of the desert by the pearl divers.

From time of the early trading with the east to the settlement of the mighty Qawasim sea-faring family and into the first half of the 19th century, Sharjah was the most important port on the lower Arabian Gulf.

Sharjah was completely devastated by the British in 1820 AD, but it revived more rapidly than other ports in the Emirates area. It was then an important air-station connecting the West with India. It should also be pointed out that the Heart of Sharjah contains large and small architectural buildings and religious structures like mosques and markets that bear witness to city’s development and evolution through time.

Shurooq is developing the Heart of Sharjah, in what is considered as the first and largest ever heritage development in the region. Seeking to reflect what Sharjah was like over half a century ago, the project will restore and revamp the city’s traditional areas to create a tourist and trade destination with contemporary artistic touches, yet retain the feel of the 1950s.

Scheduled for completion in 2025, the first of five phases is already underway, and Shurooq has set up a joint committee – comprising representatives from leading governmental and private bodies – to oversee the implementation of this first phase. The Heart of Sharjah will also be realised in accordance with international standards of sustainable development and environmental principles.

The National Council of Tourism and Antiquities in collaboration with the local supervisory departments has nominated seven Emirati sites for entry on the tentative list of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.

The nominated places included three sites from Sharjah (Sir Bu Nair Island, the Cultural Landscape of the Central Region – Mleiha– and Heart of Sharjah), one site from Abu Dhabi (Settlement and Cemetery of Umm an-Nar Island), Khor Dubai, Ed-Dur Site in Umm Al Quwain and Al Bidya Mosque in Fujairah. The addition of new sites to the list contributes to highlighting the rich heritage of the UAE, which dates back to hundreds of years in the past.

In 2011, Al Ain City became the first United Arab Emirates’ site to be listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. In the same year, the organisation approved to study the file of the ancient Sharjah and the emirate’s bid for registration on the tentative list of the World Heritage Sites, an achievement which is realised after two years of dedicated efforts.

UAE Heritage

Popular Medicine in the UAE; a Legacy of Generations

Each nation has its own heritage which is inherited by generation after generation and in each historical stage, social, economical and cultural changes will contribute in developing more tradition to the heritage.

The heritage of popular medicine is created from medical treatment, medication and nutrition customs in addition to folk stories, narratives, popular arts and proverbs conveyed from a generation to another. Daily life experiences across the ages are the main stream of the popular culture in the Emirates and the Arabian Gulf.

A woman in primitive and Bedouin communities has multiple specific roles, for she is not only in charge of fostering her children, but she has to cure them from sickness. She has to know how to use and deal with herbs as the people in the Emirates used to depend on the available herbs of the desert in her pursue to make medicine, where several women appeared in such communities to be the popular-medicine physicians. The people of the Emirates were used to manage dessert herbs for curing and treatment of sickness and because they were also mentioned in the Hadeeth, the sayings of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The person who deals with and has knowledge of medicinal herbs was called “Ashabb” –the Arabic for Herbalist. In the early Islamic Eras a lot of famous Arab Ashabbs appeared who used herbs as traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. In old times medical herb dealer in the Emirates was called “Attar”. The community was respecting Attars as a tribute to their efforts in preparing herbs for medication. At those bygone days “attar” was called “Hawaj” a medical herb dealer who was also procure herbs and medicines which were not available in his environment and usually he found such items with trader who bring them from abroad the country. He used to sell all kinds of herbs in a small shop which also was used as the place for preparing herbal mixtures, odours, and medicines.

Preparing herbs to produce medicines requires mixing certain quantities of different herbs to produce it. Therefore the job of Attar depended on his knowledge of the recipes of herbal mixtures for

treatment of diseases which he took from the books of the old renowned Moslem Scholars such as books of Imam Al Ghazali and “ Al-Tibb al-Nabawi”- the Arabic for Prophetic Medicine-by Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya.

The trade of herbs was well known and practiced by all nations of the world from ancient times to the present. European countries are now using herbs in the contents of many new medicines which we see in the pharmacies.

Chinese were the first who used herbs as healing purposes and for treatment of diseases. They were followed by other nations such as the Greek, Romans, Persian and Arabs. Arabs adopted usage of herbal medicines for treatment from the ancient civilization and succeeded to develop popular medicine largely.

There is no doubt that the present time has seen some marvelous achievements in developing medicines.

One of the verses of the Hadeeth, of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) says:“ God creates the illness but He also creates the medicine except of one malady. They asked, “What is it”? He said: the elderly.”

The wilderness of the United Arab Emirates has its great impact on the styles of the Popular Medicine and its elements such as Sadder, Ghaff, Ramath, Tammer (dates), Hanthal and many other which will be reviewed in the next issue of this magazine.
