F1 Questionnaire 2009/10

Please would you assist by providing brief information on the last speciality of your F1 post.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – FlexiblePaediatrics

Dr Nagi Barakat

This post is mainly ward based work, but there is the opportunity to help in Paediatric A&E once a week. There is an opportunity to work on the neonatal unit for two weeks too. You gain lots of clinical experience and are well supported in the role. Overall, it was a really interesting and educational post.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 001Gastroenterology/Paediatrics/General and Breast Surgery

Dr Holdstock/Dr Barakat/Mr Babu

The information provided for the job was adequate.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 002Paediatrics/General Surgery/Gastroenterology

Mr Barakat/Dr Regan/Mr Babu/Mr Kelley/Dr Postgate

The ALERT training course is very helpful. However, it would be useful to have ILS earlier in the year, and Level 1 Child Protection Training should be available as core teaching.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 003General and Breast Surgery/Gastroenterology/Paediatrics

Mr E. Babu/Dr G. Holdstock/Dr N. Barakat

This is a well supported post which is ideal for individuals starting their FY1 Year. It provides an introduction to general paediatrics and neonatal which is useful if you are considering applying for a paediatric post in the future. There is lots of structured teaching.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 004

Anaesthetics/Endocrinology/Vascular SurgeryMr Paes

This post provides good exposure to management of acutely unwell patients, especially in Endocrinology/General Medicine and ITU. I have gained a good understanding of the importance of Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Renal Support in ITU. I also achieved good experience as regards airway management in anaesthetics. Medical on-calls at night provide more time to learn.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 005Endocrinology/Vascular Surgery/AnaestheticsDr Baburaj/Dr Mitchell/Mr Paes/Dr Weinbren/Mark Smith/Wolland/Vagamou/Thowiley/Dr Knight/Char

This is a brilliant post, with overall good exposure to Medicine, Surgery and Anaesthetics. Good support was available.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 006Vascular Surgery/Anaesthetics/Diabetes and Endocrinology

Dr C. Mitchell/Dr R. Baburaj

This was a busy General Medicine Firm with lots of exposure to a wide variety of endocrine and general medical problems. On-calls provide lots of experience in the acute management of sick patients.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 008Anaesthetics/Vascular Surgery/Cardiology

Prof S. K. Das/Dr Dubrey/Dr Dubrey

This is a FANTASTIC rotation, it was my first choice and I would recommend it to everyone.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 009Vascular Surgery/Cardiology/Anaesthetics & ITU

Prof Das/Dr Dubrey/Dr Grucott-Mason/Dr J. Weinbren

Time is allocated for ITU & Anaesthetics. There is excellent care and support available for the F1’s. It is a wonderful hospital to work in, and I had a thoroughly enjoyable and educational F1 Year. I look forward to returning!

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 010Colorectal Surgery/Urology/Respiratory Medicine/Care of the Elderly

Dr Vasiliaeidis/Dr Vowles

This is a fairly busy firm, but well supported. There are lots of opportunities and a broad spectrum of medical problems encountered. You work closely with Physio and 0T.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 011Urology/Colorectal/Care of the Elderly/Respiratory

Mr Pope/Mr Harris/Dr Vasileidas/Dr Wills

It would be helpful to get the timetable of the firm, including clinics, theatre lists, WR’s, meetings, etc. and the on-call rota in advance.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 012Care of the Elderly/Respiratory Medicine/Colorectal Surgery/Urology

Dr Vasileiadis/Dr Wills/Mr Harris

Try to get the timetable of the House Officer jobs before starting work.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 013Respiratory Medicine/Care of the Elderly/Urology/Colorectal Surgery

Mr Harris/Mr Mohsen/Mr Prabhudeseu/Mr Dutta

Colorectal Surgery at Hillingdon Hospital is a busy firm, working for four consultants. There are regular on-calls and the team is on-take very frequently so there are good opportunities for learning about acute surgical admissions.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 014Colorectal Surgery/Urology/Care of the Elderly/Respiratory Medicine

Mr Mohsen/Mr No/Dr Barnes/Dr Haselden

This is a useful combination of jobs, although it is busy with on-calls all year round. It can be a tough start on Colorectal Surgery, which is a busy job, but it is good once you are settled

in. There are good opportunities for going to theatre and attempting procedures. It is a small hospital with a more relaxed approach.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 015Colorectal/Urology/Care of the Elderly/Respiratory

Dr Barnes/Dr Ev

This is an enjoyable post, which is very good for General Medicine, and thus good for being an all-round doctor. You learn to discuss matters with family members and work closely with other health professionals including OT, physiotherapy, social workers and dieticians. The X-ray meetings are educational.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 016Care of the Elderly/Respiratory/Colorectal/Urology

Mr Ng/Mr Pope

This is quite a relaxed post, with relaxed consultants. The ward work is independent, but not strenuous, and there is some potential for hands-on theatre experience. There are 2 House Officers, 2 SpR’s and 1 staff grade.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 017Respiratory/Care of the Elderly/Urology/Colorectal

Dr Haselden/Dr Gerry/Mr Ng/Mr Mohsen

It would be good to find out the average working hours for each rotation, and the frequency of the on-calls.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 018Breast Surgery/Paediatrics/Care of the Elderly/Cardiology

Dr Dubrey/Dr Grocott-Mason

This was a fun and enjoyable post, with supportive staff and seniors. I learnt a lot.

Dr Barakat/Mr Kelley/Dr Grocott-Mason/Dr Gerry

Care of the Elderly is well supported by the consultants, who are keen to teach on the ward rounds. There is good interaction with the multi-disciplinary team. It can get busy at times and it is sometimes difficult to comply with the rotas.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 020Care of the Elderly/Cardiology/Breast Surgery/Paediatrics

Dr Gerry/Dr Vowles/Dr Barakat/Dr Grocott-Mason/Dr Dubrey/Mr Kelley/Mr Babu/Mr Kaplan

It would be beneficial to obtain a definition of a supernumerary post, and a copy of the rota to be worked.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 021Cardiology/Care of the Elderly/Paediatrics/Breast Surgery

Mr Kelley/Mr Babu/Mr Kaplan

There are pre-op assessment clinics on Monday and Wednesday, and it is common to prescribe for surgery. This was a good post, enjoyable, with very friendly consultants.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 022Renal Medicine/Colorectal Surgery/Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Dr Baburaj/Chaudhry/Mr Chilcott

It would help to find out the role of the F1 in the Gynaecology team, and the teaching schedule, in advance.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 023Obstetrics and Gynaecology/Renal Medicine/Colorectal Surgery

Mr Prabhudesai

It would be good to know the structure of the team and a provisional timetable before starting the post.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 024Colorectal/Obstetrics and Gynaecology/Endocrinology/Renal

Mr Schardy/Mr I. Chilcott/Dr C. Mitchell

This is a very busy firm, with 2 consultant ward rounds per week. 1 in 5 days are spent on-call, with 1 weekend of days, 2-3 weekends of nights and 2 weeks of nights during the whole rotation. Thus there is a total of 9-10 days on-call.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation - 025Orthopaedics/Anaesthetics/Gastroenterology

Dr Weinbren/Dr Datta/Mr Houlihan-Burne

Hillingdon Hospital is a great hospital to work in as an F1.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 026Obstetrics and Gynaecology/Anaesthetics/Gastroenterology

Dr Cook/Dr Weinbren/Dr Datta

I am currently doing Gastroenterology where I am being exposed to General Medicine. I am also experiencing medical on-takes and ward based work.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 027Gastroenterology/Orthopaedics/Anaesthetics and ITU

Dr Holdstock/Dr Datta/Dr Lean/Mr Houlihan-Burne/Dr Weinbren/Dr Knight/Dr Vagonar

It would be good to find out about the on-call requirements. There were a number of unfilled posts on the team, so staff numbers were short.

Hillingdon Hospital – Foundation Year 1 Rotation – 029Orthopaedics/EAU/A&EMr Langstaff/Dr Edwards

This post provided good training and education.

A&E/Obstetrics and Gynaecology/EAUJohavi/Sweatman/Carruth/Cook/Firkett/Jackson/Mr Chilcott/Dr Edwards/Dr

Baburaj/Dr Vaiselaledes/Dr Gerry

In A&E, the job improved, with 1 day on the Obs ward and the rest of the time on the Majors. In Obstetrics and Gynaecology, if you do the night shifts, you get two weeks off.
