The best way to enjoy a magazine is when you open the plastic wrap, smell that fresh aroma of paper and ink, touching pages by pages while emotionally stirred by the stories or the graphic. Maybe I am just too sentimental with printed media, as I grew old in the 90s where everything seems to get personal. Well, I guess people change, and they have to change in order to follow the rhythm of life.

People always seek the ideal way for living life to the most. At least I am the kind of person who constantly try to find the ideal way in everything, even from the smallest thing to the biggest movement in fashion Muslim industry. However, in reality we have to admit there are no such thing as ideal. We picture it to be ideal, but everyone thinks ideally in different ways--ideals they do believe in.

We live in digital era when everything can be digitalized,

scalable, and countable. We are living the reality that people enjoy having massive information and visual excitement within their palm. We are excited to be part of this shifting generation from printed to digital, from corner book store to downloadable information, from scrapbooking era to viral content.

Please welcome our digital era by embracing HijUp Magazine on your fingertips. We are here, to celebrate the rapid development of modest fashion. Enjoy the beautiful HijUp Magazine. Download HijUp Magazine and enjoy it anytime anywhere.

The richness of Indonesia’s nature and culture are represented in these rustic accessories. Necklaces made from earth’s element like stones and shells would give your whole look a touch of tribal. Tribal motif, batik, and tenun ikat are seen in this earth-tone scarf with traditional nuance .

HELLO, LARAS! HOW WAS THE PHOTO SHOOT? DID YOU HAVE FUN?

Soraya (S): It was very fun indeed! The thing I love about this photo shoot is, it exposes my true colors, with these whole oriental ambiance. To encapsulate it with Muslim outfits, while also create a Japanese-ish and Chinese-ish nuance, so inspiring. Most stuffs about Muslims are colloquially related to Middle-East, you know. So I like this Muslim-Asian thingy from this photo shoot. Wonderful.

WE SAW BIG CHANGE ON YOU, YOU’RE WEARING HIJAB NOW! HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT?

S: It’s so comfortable wearing hijab. It protects me, and surprisingly, everything is much simpler now. No more bad-hair day, time-consuming hair groom, hahaha. I really love that today’s hijab fashion is very modest, yet they look effortlessly stylish. You don’t need much needles, as if you just put in your head as it is, yet they look cute and cool in some ways.

WHAT MOVED YOU TO WEAR HIJAB, BACK THEN?

S: It was a process from not knowing to a full realization. I used to think hijab was so identical with “pesantren” (Islamic boarding school) students or religious women. But my husband, he’s earnest in broaden his knowledge of Islam. And the more he knows, the more there is for me too. He suggested me to wear hijab once, so I decided to give it a try. As I started to cover my head, it’s like, as if Allah showed me the way. I got the chance to meet new friends that opened my eyes, this is mandatory. Just like the urge to eat or drink, it becomes your primary needs. Hijab is not a matter of choice.

As a mother and wife, career is no longer my top priority. Now I’m focus on being a good Muslim, obeying Allah’s rules. But frankly, I had to reject numerous jobs at the beginning, since I used to portray antagonistic roles. I’m wearing hijab now, those roles no longer fit me. While I lost

some jobs, I gain something else priceless: the chance to learn more about Islam and be grateful of everything I have in my life. It is proven that Allah open new doors to rizqi as an entertainer, entrepreneur that go harmoniously with me as a hijabi now. I guess this is God’s way of saying, “Just have a faith in Me, and I’ll show you something else,” which are even better. Alhamdulillah.

SO, WE DID A LITTLE ‘RESEARCH’ ON YOU…

S: Really? Hahahaha.

YES, YES, BELIEVE ME, WE DO. HAHAHA. AND WE FOUND OUT YOU HAVE MIXED ANCESTRIES: BATAK (NORTH SUMATERA), SUNDA (WEST JAVA), AND CHINESE. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS COLORFUL BACKGROUND OF YOURS?

S: Yeah, I wish I had some Mexican or Hungarian roots, too, you know. Hahaha. My

father was a pure Chinese, and my mother was of Sundanese-Batak descent. Yet my face decided to appear Chinese, most of all. Hehehe. So, it’s a bit hard to tell… I’d say I’m an Indonesian. My dad was a mualaf, when he married my mom. So all of their children are born Muslims.

WHOA. THIS IS DISCOVERY.

S; Yes, yes, it is. Most people thought I’m a mualaf when I started wore hijab or some thought when I married my Muslim husband. Hahaha. Maybe because of my ‘Made in China’ face, what can I say. Hahaha.

I GUESS THIS IS ONE OF THE BENEFIT OF YOUR HIJAB, YOU KNOW. IT IDENTIFIES YOU AS A MUSLIM.

S: Touché. Since I wore hijab, I suppose people tend to respect me more. No one offers me sexy-antagonistic roles, like some of horror-comedy movies I used to play. They’re inspired by American teenage horror movies, so the actress dressed sensually with shorts or tank-tops.

I’d prefer protagonist roles to portray, to be honest. Unfortunately, since I don’t have that ‘girl-next-door’ face of Alyssa Soebandono (a leading Indonesian actress known for protagonistic roles). Hahaha. Since I wore hijab, I starred in several television movie for protagonist. And I’m loving it. Now I know how exhausting to be Laudya Cynthia Bella (a leading Indonesian actress known for sappy roles) is since she played some great protagonist roles in tear-jerker movies. Hehehe.

HIJUP MAGAZINE IS ALL ABOUT DIVERSITY FOR THIS FEBRUARY ISSUE. SINCE YOU HAVE MIXED ANCESTRIES, HOW DO YOU FEEL OF GROWING UP IN DIVERSE CULTURE?

S: It’s confusing. Especially with various religions in my big family, my paternal side in particular: Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. Grew up in such family, you get to know many cultures and religions, but the downside is you never really know any of it in-depth. I knew fastings, salat, and everything but I never really reflect on the purpose of these.

My family never really make earnest effort in their children religious life. Even my dad enrolled me to a Catholic school, which is quite troublesome during Ramadhan fasting. Hehehe. On the bright side is, I grew to be a tolerant person. I could easily befriend literally anyone, regardless who they are. I could eclectically gain the virtues from different religion and culture, as well, which is really good in shaping who I am today.

WOULD YOU CARE TO ELABORATE ‘THE VIRTUES FROM DIFFERENT RELIGION AND CULTURE’?

S: Some of the most admirable qualities of my dad sare hardworking and tenacious. He never complained of anything in life. He’s very generous to his surroundings, not only his family. While my maternal side stressed on family values, family comes first. As I grow older, I realized that both of their teachings go hand-in-hand with Islamic virtues, as well: about patience,

resilience, family, generosity, giving without expecting in return. So it’s safe for me to say, both families and their values completed each other.

DO YOU EVER BULLIED FOR YOUR BEING, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE YOU LOOK CHINESE, OR NO ONE THOUGHT YOU’RE A MUSLIM?

S: Well, too many to name! Hahaha. Back then when I just started my career in 2001, I was a finalist for teen cover girl contest. It was dominated by Indonesian faces, unlike today’s similar competition that has broad varieties of beauty, so I’m already different from the beginning. Then I launched my career in a teen TV series Cinta SMU, which has two leading roles with Arabic face. Many scouters and producers judged me from my oriental look. They don’t bother to cast or audition me for my capability, which in result only gain me supporting roles. So it was quite hampering, actually. But luckily I could took everything easily, because I was busy completing my education at the same time.

And for bullying, well, none that I experienced of. People would just call me ‘Cina! Cina!’ at most. It was worse when I was a kid, since I’m not Indonesian nor Chinese. Indonesian would see me as a Chinese, yet my Chinese friends regarded me as no Chinese. Look, I don’t go to church, and my skin is not as fair as how a Chinese should be. They have this nickname ‘Tiko’ for me.

TIKO? HAHAHA. FUNNY! WHAT WAS THAT?

God knows what. Haha. But anyway, this labeling could get to your nerves sometime, you know. It’s like, I never asked to be born as a Chinese and I’m not a Chinese, for God’s sake! Hahaha. It’s confusing too, at school. The school obligated its student to go to church, yet I insisted on not to. There was a point I don’t know where I belong. However, things got better when Meteor Garden (Taiwanese TV show) were such a boom.

So I guess I should thank Tao Ming Tse and F4, apparently. Hehehe. My point is, nothing last forever. Life is like a spinning wheel, as I saw my career launched to a higher degree: commercials, cover girl, leading roles, beauty product, etc.

TO SUM UP, WHAT IS THE MEANING OF TOLERANCE FOR SORAYA LARASATI?

S: Tolerance in about respecting each other in every aspects. It is something that makes our living goes pleasantly despite of many differences.

ANYTHING ELSE, OR MESSAGE YOU’D LIKE TO SPREAD FOR OUR READERS SO THEY COULD CHERISH CULTURAL DIVERSITY ON THEIR LIFE?

S: Never go fanatic except for your belief in Alquran, or Islam itself or the practice. As long as your purpose isn’t conflicting to the teachings stated in Alquran, just go for it.

One of recurring theme in fashion weeks is a glimpse of Asian elements, namely kimono and obi. Kimono is a Japanese traditional garments that went through many periods. During Heian Period (794-1192), kimono in this era drew inspirations from the four seasons, as an epitome of deep love. One of the most prominent kimonos back then was Juunihitoe with 12 layers of fabrics.

During the middle age, such as Kamakura (1192-1338), Muromachi (1338-1573), to Azuchi-Momoyama (1568-1603) kimonos were modified into much simpler outfits for mobility. Contrary to Heian Period kimonos, kimono in this era are characterized with vibrant colors, eccentric embroideries, and many decorative details.

Edo Period (1603-1868) saw rapid growth in trading and industries. Thus affecting kimonos with better quality, richer motifs and colors. This is partly due to the invention of Yuzen coloring technique.

A TOUCH OF JAPAN

Japanese acculturation with Western cultures during Meiji Period (1868-1912) impacted the way Japanese dress themselves. Governments encourage people from upper class to adopt tuxedos, ties, and gowns. Soon, kimonos are eroded from Japanese daily garments. Nowadays, Japanese wear kimono for wedding, funerals, traditional ceremonies, summer festivals, etc.

Future today sees the oppsite: Western world is immensely inspired by Japanese traditional fashion. A.F. Vandevorst released a kimono-like collection with black-studded details, inspired by Eastern women travelling to west where both culture collided. Iris Van Herpen, infamous for avant-garde designs released a futuristic version of kimono. However, Maison Margiela and Olympia Le Tan designed a very traditional-looking kimono, rooted from the ones worn by geisha. Jenahara and Ethnica Indonesia released their version of modern kimono as Muslim pieces in Indonesia.
