Harvest Festival.Harvest festivals are the essence of traditional rural life. For residents of the small rural community of Collector, the annual Pumpkin Festival celebrates the arrival of another harvest season and nothing could be more traditional than bringing in the pumpkins after the first autumn frosts and making a bowl of wonderful pumpkin soup or a tray of hot pumpkin scones!!

For many people, visiting Collector for the Pumpkin Festival has become an annual pilgrimage and a day to enjoy the best that rural

life has to offer. It is a day for family and friends to share great food and have fun. With pumpkin growing competitions, pumpkin soup, pumpkin scones, regional produce, stalls, activities, performances and displays, the festival has built a reputation as one of the regions not-to-be-missed annual events.

Sunday 6 May is the day for all things pumpkin!! The 2012 Collector Village Pumpkin Festival is on again and will feature a wonderful array of pumpkin exhibits, food stalls, art, craft, gifts and entertainment for all the family.

The entertainment will start with a “Poets Breakfast” at the Bushranger Hotel followed by music all day at the festival by iconic Australian performers Pat Drummond and Karen Lynne.

Returning to the festival this year will be the Animal Farm Patting Paddock sponsored by Acciona Energy. A new feature for the 2012 festival will be the Australian Air Force hot air balloon.

Time for an Autumn Drive!

Fitzroy Falls Bowral from the Gib

The Southern Highlands is scattered with delightful villages like Robertson, Bundanoon and Burrawang; they are perfect destinations for a lazy afternoon outing.

Whether you are visiting or live in the Southern Highlands, one of our lovely villages will only be a short drive away, offering an opportunity to enjoy coffee by a fireside or a glass of one our superb regional wines.

You might consider the following route for something different:• Begin at Fitzroy Falls, in the Morton National Park. The NPWS Visitor Centre, has toilets and a café. Take a walk on one of the walking tracks to a stunning waterfall or lookout, enjoy a picnic and admire the flora and fauna displays in the Visitor Centre!

• Leave Fitzroy Falls, turn left into Nowra Rd, turn left again into Myra Vale Rd and travel across country to Wildes Meadow and then to Burrawang via Wildes Meadow Rd

& Church St. Burrawang has a lovely country pub where you can enjoy wonderful country hospitality .

• From here, head back along Wildes Meadow Rd and Myra Vale Rd. (13.5 kilometre drive) to Belmore Falls. The Falls are in the Morton National Park, and there are walking tracks and picnic facilities.

• After Belmore Falls travel towards Robertson via Pearsons Lane and the Illawarra Hwy. Visit the Robertson Nature Reserve, 5 hectares of unique rainforest and a 750m walk. In the town of Robertson, you will find specialty shops, cafes, the Old Cheese Factory which houses a gift shop, homewares and a country cafe. Stay a while and enjoy a devonshire tea.

• When you leave Robertson, you can then travel down Jamberoo Pass where you will find the Illawarra Fly or travel further to Minnamurra Rainforest. Here you will find an abundance of wildlife, birdlife and

Minamurra Falls. Take a walk to the Falls or head back into the Highlands.

Another suggested route:• Begin at Fitzroy Falls, take a walk to the Falls and afterwards, enjoy the displays and a coffee in the café in the NPWS Visitor Centre.

• After taking in the magic of Fitzroy Falls, drive to Robertson via Myra Vale Road and the Illawarra Hwy. After visiting Robertson you can travel back towards Moss Vale and take a right turn into Sheepwash Road off the Illawarra Highway to Kangaloon. From here take a leisurely drive along the Tourist Road into Glenquarry. This scenic drive has some of the most beautiful rural land in the Southern Highlands.

• Continue on to Bowral, the largest town in the Southern Highlands. The town is well known for its specialty shops, restaurants, cafes, cellar doors, antique shops, and of course the International Cricket Hall of Fame.

• Mittagong is only a short drive from Bowral and there you will find the Southern Highlands Visitor Information Centre, ready to enhance your visit by offering information about the region. Don't miss picturesque Lake Alexandra in the centre of Mittagong. It has BBQ and picnic areas as well as playgrounds and easy walks for all the family.

If you are travelling to Sydney, take the Old Hume Highway through Braemar, then into the Wollondilly Shire, visiting the country towns of Bargo, Picton and historic Camden.

Maybe antique hunting is more your thing? Bowral is hosting an Antiques and Collectables Fair over the weekend of the 5 -6 May. The Fair promises to be a draw card for collectors, both serious and novice.

Innovation by Accident Until 12 July

The Trainworks Exhibition Railways were once the cutting edge of invention and innovation, and improvements in rail vehicle design, track and signalling, have been ongoing since the first locomotive hauled the first train.

Trainworks, in partnership with the NSW Rail Transport Museum and the Australian Railway Historical Society (NSW Division) is presenting a temporary exhibition detailing some of the innovative improvements designed and implemented by the railways throughout the years, including many that have come about to improve safety following accidents. The exhibition is part of the 2012 National Trust Heritage Festival and will include photographs and small railway objects and lectures.

John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW.

Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art

On Sunday 6 May is Wivenhoe Historic House Open Day. Enjoy a glimpse of a bygone era with a guided tour of the historical house, built in 1837.

May is the month to give mum a big "thank you". Saturday 5th May and Sunday 6th May 2012 will see the Bowral Memorial Hall transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when around twenty dealers from all around the country combine for the 25th Southern Highlands Antiques Fair.

Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike.

Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments.

Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector.

The Southern Highlands Antiques Fair is a major fundraiser for the Bowral and District Hospital Auxiliary who will provide delicious light lunches and morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair as well as a raffle and a stall selling delicious cakes, biscuits and jams.

The Southern Highlands Antiques Fair is open to the public from 9:00am until 5:00pm on Saturday 5th May and from 10:00am until 4:00pm on Sunday 6th May.

Admission is $8.00 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free.

The Bowral Memorial Hall is situated in Bendooley St, Bowral, parallel to Bong Bong St, right in the centre of town.

Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair - 5 & 6 May


The Oxley Hill Rotary Community Lookout is located at the top of Oxley’s Hill Rd Bowral overlooking the western approach to Bowral. Construction of the Lookout was the contribution of the Rotary Club of Berrima District to the 2005 Centenary of Rotary International and was officially opened by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, CVO Governor of NSW on Wednesday 6th June 2006.

Conceived in late 2001 and spanning the incumbencies of four Club Presidents (Allan Cupitt, Col Gelling, Rob Hurdwell and John Macpherson), the Lookout contains an Analemma sundial which uses the rays of the sun and shadows to tell the time. A brass plaque to the left of the sundial shows its exact location and gives directions how to use it.

The entrance to the Lookout contains a plaque which informs visitors that they are standing on traditional Gundungurra Land. The plaque also

indicates the direction in which neighbouring tribes lived.

Nearby a second plaque lists the names of the early Europeans who explored the Wingecarribee area and their Aboriginal guides.

Oxley Hill Lookout - a place for contemplation!The Lookout was built to provide a place for contemplation, and to recognise the part played by local Aboriginal people in the exploration and settlement of the Wingecarribee region.

The Lookout adds to the tourism experience for visitors approaching Bowral from the west, supplements the history of local Aboriginal people and widens knowledge of the science associated with the sundial.

Wingecarribee Shire Council allowed the Lookout to be built on the road reserve at the top of Oxley’s Hill Rd.

The Club appreciated the cooperation and assistance of the Yamanda Aboriginal Assocation and the Wingecarribee Reconciliation Group for their part in providing the two bronze plaques that provide an Aboriginal focus for the Lookout.

Lake Alexandra Reserve Park & Garden

Lake Alexandra in Mittagong Township is a man - made lake, originally a dam, which supplied water for engines hauling coal to the Fitzroy iron mines in the 19C. A park - like reserve surrounds the lake and an abundance of birdlife live on the water and shores. Undercover BBQ and playground facilities are on site as the area has recently undergone a revamp.

Lake Alexandra Reserve is 2000 ha in area (5,000 acres) and includes Box Vale Walking Track, Nattai Loop Track, Forty Foot Falls, Yellow Track, and Green Track & Red Track.

Walking maps are available from Southern Highlands Tourism. This family attraction is accessible at all times and is an unexpected delight in the midst of a major town in the Southern Highlands. Queen St, Mittagong Entry is free!

So close - a world awayThe Southern Highlands is rich in heritage and history. Many villages and towns have interesting and unusual names derived from the Aboriginal language, others are named after famous explorers and early settlers.

Berrima - a shoppers paradiseBerrima is a unique, historic vil-lage offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environ-ment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River.

The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s.

Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.

Moss Vale, the Shire CapitalMoss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is cen-tral to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attrac-tions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an ef-fort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes.

Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Bundanoon

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it.

Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas.

You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town.

Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Take a walk or cycle in the crisp autumn air! As you drive across the bridge over the Wingecarribee River near Moss Vale, you’ll see a concrete path winding across the paddock. This walk and bike way is a 4.5 km walk to Burradoo.

From the roadway it looks a bit ‘so what’, but once you’re on the path you might even wonder if you haven’t stepped onto one of those English rural footpaths which meanders by the river, past and through farmland.

Around about midway on the walk you pass a section of the river where the scene resembles one of Constable’s paintings.

The path is measured in 500 metre lots so you know how far you’ve gone or when it’s time to turn back.

Take a bottle of water with you, and if it’s a sunny day, you’ll need a hat.

There’s no shade on this pathway.

There is a carpark near the bridge where the monument to Bong Bong, the first Southern Highlands settlement, is located.

Where to find the walk? Look for the open land at the northern end of Moss Vale.

This chalice is typical of glass artist Peter Crisp’s distinctive and beautiful work and is a world first for the inclusion of gold, platinum and light blue sapphires in its structure.

Auctioned by Sotheby’s Rome in 2010, it raised $20,000.00 for the “Cure For Life Foundation”. Peter’s studio at the Crisp Galleries, Bowning, also features examples of artworks with designs inspired by the ancient Egyptian technique of slumped glass.

The author of many biographies, for this talk she will cover “That Woman – Wallis Simpson”. Based on at least three years of research (and 75 years after the abdication of Edward VIII) Anne Sebba believes it is now time to reassess “that woman”. Traditionally, wine growing in Australia took place in warmer regions where access to water for irrigation made growing grapes easier. Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are a good reason for visitors to include this area in your tour of the Southern Highlands.

There are several walks to choose from such as a timber boardwalk to the falls, or for the more adventuresome a 7km walk into a rainforest gully.

There are many good reasons to call in to the Robertson Cheese Factory. The old building has great character, built in 1936 by local farmers to make the Robertson Tasty Cheese, and cheese making continued until 1989. Now the old building houses a unique group of small businesses and has become a very popular destination for visitors and locals alike. Sitting on the top of the hill above Macquarie Pass it is has wonderful views of the lush green pastures with often misty skies.

The Cheese Factory Café is the place to sit, cool down with home made gelato and soak up the tranquillity, until a train rumbles past the huge picture windows

St Saviour's Cathedral 1874 to 1884 - one of the finest white sandstone cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere. The splendid bell-tower, soaring windows and massive stone work are the first impressions one has of the building. The Cathedral and Hall were designed by Edmund T. Blackett at the peak of his career.

The Forster and Andrews organ contained 43 stops and 2252 pipes when installed but has been modified several times since. It is regarded as one of the best pipe organs in Australia and one of the most sought after by organists who wish to play it. Ph: 4821 2206

Goulburn Historic Waterworks- a part of Australia's heritage The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. The Waterworks has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the

1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn.

The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere. Café, picnic areas and playgrounds. Ph: 4823 4448

Riversdale Historic Homestead– a historic 1830s Inn Riversdale was purchased in 1875 by Edward Twynam who later became Surveyor General of NSW. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1967 from the Twynam family and is set in beautiful flowering gardens. The Inn is furnished as a mid-19th century colonial cottage. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.

By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise.

In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.

The Sea Bridge

Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.

The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs.

Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers.

Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot

where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight.

Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean.

North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants.

From those northern villages, the Grand Pacific Drive makes its way into the city of Wollongong. There you will find an array of shopping outlets, restaurants and cafes, golf courses, art galleries and more.

Opportunity Knocks on display 26 May – 26 August, features a series of miniature ‘McMansions’ constructed from plastic and old credit cards placed inside snowdomes.

The James Kiwi Watercolour Prize celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2012. This biennial art award supports one of the most popular art forms. Selected entries from the leading prize for watercolour painting in the Illawarra will be on display until 10 June.
