HERE, OVERACTIVEIMAGINATIONS ARE A GOOD THING
AT OCAD UNIVERSITY, WE TAKE IMAGINATION SERIOUSLY.Imagination is the starting point for your student journey: you come to OCAD University, where you join a community of creative students who are the artists, designers and media makers of the future. You’re guided and inspired by the best talent from Canada’s cultural capital, whether those are your professors or your mentors from among our many business and cultural partnerships.
In the beginning, you bring your imagination and that leads you to invent solutions to challenges. To see the world differently. To challenge conventional wisdoms. In the end, your imagination becomes the fuel that fires your creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills.
The world needs the talents of people like you and OCAD U is the perfect place for you to grow and nurture those talents. Founded in 1876, the university has grown to encompass studies in many forms of art, design and new media. We also offer rich courses in humanities, business practice and science that equip our students with insight, inspiration and incentive to fully realize their creative gifts. We offer active studio and interdisciplinary learning, a wide array of produc-tion facilities for both traditional and digital creation, and personal attention through small classes.
As our president, Dr. Sara Diamond, says, “The combined power of design thinking, artistic creativity, out-of-the-box imagination and the ability to make tangible — to prototype and build — are required as never before.”
At OCAD U, you’ll work hard because you’ll want to.
Because you'll be inspired.
Because you can’t imagine being anywhere else.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
You will discover that the greatest strength of Industrial Design is that we solve problems that help others. While many of the solutions will be products, they will also be experiences and inter-actions. You will learn about materials, processes, systems, human factors, design history and many other topics. Your most powerful tool will be a deep understanding of a design process, which is a sharp tool that can be used to solve many kinds of problems, from organizational strategies to digital toys and many other things. As a result, graduates of this program find themselves in a wide array of sectors, from entre-preneurship and consulting to product design and systems design.
Sam KennedyKennedy created Feltro in partnership with OCAD U’s startup incubator Imagination Catalyst (see p. 25). WANT TO BECOME A STUDENT AT OCAD U?
You can imagine what others can’t see. You’re inspired and want the chance to develop your ideas and express them. You’re an inventor who seeks a like-minded community where you can collaborate, create and challenge one another to reach greater heights. You want to put your creativity to work.
You’ll find your home at OCAD U.
WHICH MAJOR SHOULD I CHOOSE?
If you need help deciding which of our programs best suit you, do some homework by talking to people who are active in these fields. Ask them about the differences and similarities in art, design and media. Some will say that, as an artist, you will find the challenge is primarily about self-expression. You have a statement to make or an emotion to share, and you work independently to communicate your ideas effectively. As a designer, the challenge is primarily about expressing your concept while responding to a particular need of a user, client or group within society. In any creative discipline, your success depends on you becoming a critical thinker, as well as a strong visual communicator.
WHERE DO I START MY APPLICATION?
All applications are made online through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) at ouac.on.ca. The deadline to apply for all programs at OCAD U is February 1 and the only entry point for all programs at OCAD U is in September.

You need to demonstrate that you are a visual communicator and that you are well-equipped to succeed in your first year of study. This can include experimentation in traditional and digital mediums or any combination.
