2. Herbal Plants 3. Tamarind (Tamarindus officinalis)Sampalok is a large tree 12 to 25 m high, nearly glabrous. Leaves are evenly pinnate, 6 to 10 centimeters long, with 20 to 4 0 leaflets, rather close oblong, obtuse, 1 to 2 centimeters long. Racemes are mostly axillary though sometimes panicled, and reaching length of 5 to 10 cm. 4. Bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi ) Kamias is a small tree, growing 5 to 12 meters high. L eaves are pinnate, 20 to 60 c m long, with hairy rachis an d leaflets. Leaflets are op- posi te, 10 to 17 pairs, oblong, 5 to 10 centimeters in length. Panic les growing from the trunk and larger branches are hairy, 15 centimeters long or less. Fl owers are about 1.5 cm long , and slightly fragrant. Fruit is g reen and edible, about 4 ce ntimeters long, subcylindric, or with 5 obs- cure, broad, ro unded, longi- tudinal lobes. 5. Star Fruit (Averrhoa carambola)Balimbing is a small t ree growing to a height of 6 meters or less. Leaves ar e pinnate, about 15 cm lon g. Leaflets are smooth, usu ally in 5 pairs, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, the up per ones about 5 cm long and the lower ones small er. Panicles are small, axill ary and bell- shaped, 5 to 6 millimeters long. Calyx is reddish purple. 6. Wormwood (Artemisia Vulgaris)Wormwood is one of several species in the genus Artemisia com- m only known as mug- wor t although Artemisia Vulgaris is the species m ost often called mug-wor t. This species is al-so occasionally known as f elon herb, chrysan-them um weed and wild wor mwood. Mugwort is use d medicinally and as culi nary herbs. 7. Calamansi (Citrus mitis Blanco)Kalamansi is a s mooth and slightly spiny pla nt, growing to a height of 3 t o 5 meters. Leaflets are elli ptic to oblong-ellip- tic, 4 to 8 centimeters long. Flowers are axillary, solitary, rarely in pairs, white, and short-stal ked. Fruit is yellow when rip e, nearly spherical, 2 to 3.5 centimeters diame-ter, 6- to 7-celled, and thin-skinned. T he skin or peel is green to y ellowish green or yellow, loo sely adhering to the flesh. 8. Ginger (Amomum zingiber)Ginger is an erect, smooth plant arising from th ickened, very aromatic roo tstocks. Leafy stems are 0.4 to 1 meter high. Leaves are distichous, lanceolate to lin ear-lanceolate, 15 to 25 cen timeters long, and 2 centime ters wide or less. Spike is o void to ellipsoid, about 5 cen timeters long. Bracts are ov ate, cuspidate, about 2.5 ce ntimeters long, and pale gre en. Calyx is 1 centimeter lo ng or some- what less. 9. Mango (Mangifera indica)Mango is a large tree with a dense and spreading crown. Leaves are oblong t o oblong-lanceolate, 10 to 3 0 centimeters long. The flo wers are yellow, small, 3 to 4 millimeters long, borne on erect and hairy panicles , which as as often as long a s the leaves. The fruit is a d rupe, of varying shades of y ellow, fleshy, oblong-ovoid , 10 to 15 centimeters lon g, and slightly compress ed. 10. Guava (Psidium guajava)Guava is a somewhat hairy plant reaching a he ight of 8 meters. Young bran ches are 4-angled. Leave s are opposite, ob- long to elliptic, and 1 to 5 centimete rs long, the apex being point ed, and the base usually r ounded. Peduncles are 1 to 3-flo- wered. Flowers a re white, 3 to 3.5 centimeter s across, with in-curved pet als, co- ming out solitary or t wo to three in the leaf axils. 11. Garlic (Allium sativum) Garlic is a low h erb, 30 to 60 cm hig h. True stem is much reduced. Bulbs are bro adly ovoid, 2 to 4 cm in diameter, con-sisting of several, densely cr owded, an- gular and tr uncated tu-bers. Leaves are linear and flat. 12. Star Apple (Chrysophyllum cainito)Caimito is a tree with a spreading crown, growing to a height of 15 meters. Bran- che s are numerous and slen-der, t he young tips are cop- per-col ored and covered with appress ed hairs. Leaves are leathery , ovate or oblong, 7.5 to 13 ce ntimeters long, poin-ted at the tip, blunt or rounded at the bas e and covered underneath wit h silky, goldenbrown, soft hairs . Flowers are purplish-white, s mall and clustered in the ax ils of leaves with 5 sepals, and a tubular corolla with 5 lobes.
