In many ways 2019 seems like a lifetime ago. It was a time before the coronavirus pandemic changed the way we work, the way we live our lives, and in many cases the way we see the world. Still, looking back reveals a clear connection between where we were then and where we find ourselves today. The strong support the Hennepin Healthcare Foundation received last year put us in a position to be leaders in responding to COVID-19 and addressing the critical needs of both our patients and our staff.

The Foundation saw tremendous engagement in 2019. Through a variety of events and gatherings our board and members of the community came together to learn more about what we do and how their support makes a difference in people’s lives. We focused on telling stories that show how philanthropy is central to our mission of combining clinical excellence with a devotion to providing extraordinary care to everyone that we serve.

We established a strong partnership with clinical leadership that helped us develop a culture of generosity throughout the organization. We also worked to promote that same spirit out in the community. People saw and appreciated the uniqueness of Hennepin Healthcare’s strengths, in education, research, trauma care, or our work to address health disparities.

Donors are dreaming with us, understanding the many ways we can promote health throughout our community. The growth we’ve seen in endowments and legacy gifts shows that our supporters are seeing the long-term benefits of our programs, and understanding the generational impact we can have.

A perfect example of how philanthropy is paving the way to a healthier future is the new Redleaf Center for Family Healing. Supported by the generosity of the Lynne and Andrew Redleaf Foundation and the Pohlad Family Foundation, this new facility will provide unmatched support to new mothers and their babies, putting families on a path toward mental and physical health and wellbeing.

The Hennepin Healthcare Foundation is working hard to show how we are part of the fabric of this community. We want donors to see and feel the impact of their gifts and to understand that every single donation is appreciated and makes a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Even now, as we make our way through a period of great uncertainty, we know that the spirit of generosity continues to grow. The profound work that happens across Hennepin Healthcare is perhaps more important than ever.

Thank you for your support. With your help we will continue to make a difference for everyone we serve.

Sincerely,Theresa Pesch, RNPresident, Hennepin Healthcare Foundation

2019 Report to the Community 3

On a summer day in 2012, Courtney Cushing Kiernat received a phone call that every parent dreads. A good samaritan who was at the scene called Courtney with the news that her son, Quinn, had been in an accident. First responders were recommending Quinn be taken to HCMC.

That was when she knew it was serious.

Soon after, as she was rushing through the doors of the Emergency Room, Courtney was greeted by a man who she later found out was one of Hennepin Healthcare’s Chaplains. He was waiting for her. He quickly explained what was going on and what she was going to see when they went into her son’s room. The man was calm. He was reassuring. He understood what she was going through.

That was when Courtney knew her son was in the right place.

“He led me into the stabilization room and there were 15 people there,” said Courtney. “It was all white and there were bright lights and lots of activity and they were all there for Quinn. Everyone knew their role. They welcomed me. They answered my questions. They were amazing.”

Quinn had been riding his bike home from a friend’s house when he was struck by a car at high velocity. He was thrown from the bike onto the pavement where he lay unconscious. Luckily his bike helmet protected him and he ended up with a mild concussion, but the team of doctors and nurses who cared for him took no chances, and paid attention to every detail.

“They thought of everything and helped me navigate through a truly frightening time,” said Courtney. “I got to talk with the doctors and stay in the family room to be near my son. They took care of me even as they took care of Quinn.”

Once Quinn recovered, Courtney and her family made a point of telling people two things about the accident. FIrst, always wear a bike helmet. Second, be thankful you have access to a place like Hennepin Healthcare.

“We heard from people who were surprised we had such a great experience at Hennepin Healthcare,” said Courtney. “People think it’s just for people who don’t have insurance or resources, but the reality is they have some of the best doctors and researchers. They are a hidden gem in our community.”

Her passion to spread the word about Hennepin Healthcare prompted Courtney to join the board of the Hennepin Healthcare Foundation, helping raise awareness of the unique programs and extraordinary caregivers that have helped her family and so many others in the community.

“The more people learn about Hennepin Healthcare, the more they understand why it needs and deserves philanthropy,” said Courtney. “It’s more than a trauma hospital and it receives less than three percent of its

her dog, Zelda, visiting with paramedics and First Responders to give support to those who are on the frontlines working to keep our community safe.

In recent years, Courtney has been exposed to other areas of Hennepin Healthcare. Courtney received occupational therapy treatment and acupuncture for mild concussion symptoms. Her mom was treated in the Emergency Department. Now Courtney and her mom are working on a project to update and improve the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit waiting rooms so families can be comforted during traumatic moments as well.

“There is a constant that runs throughout the hospital and clinics and that is compassion,” said Courtney. “You have to have compassion to work at Hennepin Healthcare, and to be someone who will step in and do what it takes to help even when others might choose not to.”

Whenever she talks about Hennepin Healthcare, her thoughts drift back to the first person who greeted her after her son’s accident: the Chaplain who tried to steady the waters and help guide her through that most difficult day.

“To me, he epitomizes the entire experience that Hennepin Healthcare provides,” she said. “He wrapped me in an envelope of caring that helped our family navigate through a scary time.”

Now Courtney is determined to help further that mission, and make sure everyone has access to the compassionate, empathetic care that they deserve.

operating funds from Hennepin County. This is an asset that can only function and fulfill its mission if the community steps up to provide support.”

Courtney has been on the Foundation board for six years, and this is her second year as board chair. She says even now she gets surprised and amazed by the breadth of the services offered at Hennepin Healthcare. While many people know it as a level one trauma hospital, Hennepin Healthcare is a comprehensive health system, providing many services aimed at keeping people from getting sick or injured in the first place.

“There is a state-of-the-art Simulation Center that helps people train to work effectively as care teams. There is the Delta Dental Clinic that is staffed with translators. The Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic is working to incorporate integrative medicine and practices to help patients,” Courtney said. “The more I see and learn the more I want to share and celebrate the work that they do.”

Courtney supports the Hennepin Healthcare mission through donations of both time and money. She and her family make annual gifts to the Foundation, they have made a long-term commitment to support the Redleaf Center for Family Healing, and they support time-sensitive needs such as the Hennepin Heroes Fund. They also added a legacy gift to support Hennepin Healthcare through their estate plan.

“I feel incredibly lucky and privileged to be in a position where I don’t have to worry about having access to and paying for high quality healthcare,” said Courtney. “Everyone should be so privileged. Hennepin Healthcare is focused on addressing those needs for everyone who comes through its doors.”

Courtney gives her time as well, volunteering at Hennepin Healthcare. She provides pet therapy with

2019 Report to the Community 5

Groundbreaking of the Redleaf Center for Family Healing, November 13A ceremonial groundbreaking for the Redleaf Center for Family Healing was held on November 13. The Center is scheduled to open early 2021 and bring in a new era in providing mental health and parenting support for mothers, fathers and their children.

Light Up the NightWhile the disco dancing and celebration at Light Up the Night 2019 are now fond memories the impact lives on for families. The annual gala raised $196,344 for the Kitchen Table, the teaching kitchen and nutrition program, to be located in the Redleaf Center for Family Healing. The results earned an additional $150,000 matching gift from the Otto Bremer Trust.

Rose All DayThe Young Professionals’ annual event raised over $7,000 to support the work of Child Life to bring comfort, joy education and a welcome distraction during a child’s hospital stay. Their work is highlighted in a video, created as a gift, by Fallon and shown during the event. Link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeqFnzvD-H0&t=6s

You Only Need One Kidney This bike ride event raised $5,015 for Hennepin’s Transplant Center. 80-year old Dennis Behn rode his bicycle from Iowa City to raise awareness for organ donation. Thirteen years ago, Behn donated his kidney to his friend who had the transplant at Hennepin Healthcare.

Dawson StrongOver 65 motorcycle riders cruised 110 miles around the Aitkin area on the DawsonStrong Ride in June, raising $2,027 to support lodging for out-of-town families with loved ones in the hospital and for the Extraordinary Kids fund.

The CanopyOver 200 new faces were introduced to Hennepin Healthcare, thanks to an event organized by HHF board members, Stanley Jackson and Deborah Yungner and generously hosted by Chris Sherman at The Canopy.

ModernWellModernWell was the perfect atmosphere to present the story of the Redleaf Center for Family Healing to an intimate gathering of people interested in paternal mental health in September.

Volunteers

Enhancing the patient and family experience are hundreds of individuals donating their time and talents as volunteers. From playing piano in the lobby, fixing electronic games in pediatrics, distributing magazines, helping visitors find their way, to offering a compassionate presence at the bedside, our mission is made stronger by our community volunteers.

We are honored to recognize those who offered more than 30 hours in 2019. The bolded names celebrate over a 100 hours of service.
