THEATRE UNDER THE STARS 1

or its next season of Broadwaymusicals in Hobby Center for thePerforming Arts, Theatre UnderThe Stars is going to the movies!

Four of the six shows on the2008-09 season were smash-hit Hollywoodblockbusters before they were smash-hitBroadway musicals. They are Oprah Winfrey’sproduction of The Color Purple, based on StevenSpielberg’s Oscar-nominated film and AliceWalker’s Pulitzer Prize novel; Legally Blonde–The Musical, adapted from the multi-award-winning movie; Meet Me In St. Louis, a stageversion of Vincente Minnelli’s classic; and IrvingBerlin’sWhite Christmas, inspired by two moviesfeaturing the best-selling recorded song inmusical history.

The season concludes with the Broadway-bound Happy Days, a re-creation of the ABC-TVshow that ran for ten years, followed by Cabaret, the landmark musical that became an Oscar-winning film.

The Color Purple launches the seasonSeptember 16-28. By Pulitzer Prize-winnerMarsha Norman, with score by Brenda Russell,Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, the show isproduced by talk-show host OprahWinfrey—whostarred in the movie—and others from theBroadway production team.

Called a “musical about love” and nominatedfor 11 Tony Awards, it is the story of Celie, whofinds strength to triumph over great adversity. ItsGrammy-nominated score features gospel, jazz, pop, and blues,

TUTS’ holiday show, December 4-17, derivesfrom Irving Berlin’s most popular song—and thetop-selling recording (by Bing Crosby) inhistory—White Christmas. Crosby also appearedin both movies—Holiday Inn in 1942 and the1954 remake called White Christmas—thatinspired this show, by David Ives and Paul Blake.

It deals with two World War II veteransspending Christmas in a Vermont ski lodgemanaged by their former commanding officer.

But there’s no snow, and the resort is goingbankrupt. Abetted by a singing sister act, they alldecide—what else?—to put on a show.

The lilting score is all-Berlin, and includes thelegendary title song plus “Count Your Blessings,”“How Deep is the Ocean,” “Let Yourself Go, “ILove A Piano,” and “Sisters.”

Legally Blonde – The Musical, February 10-22,2009—one of Broadway’s liveliest “feel-good”shows,’ is based on the 2001 movie with ReeseWitherspoon as a campus beauty queen who isdumped by her blue-blooded boyfriend—and decidesto win him back by following him to Harvard LawSchool. To everyone’s surprise, she turns out to havean incredible aptitude for legal studies.

Based on a novel by Amanda Brown, it has abook by Heather Hach, with score by LaurenceO’Keefe and Nell Benjamin.

Meet Me In St. Louis, March 24-April 5, 2009,is based on the classic movie starring JudyGarland about a family threatened with disruptionof their happy life in St. Louis by the father’stransfer to New York—all in the months leadingup to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

The plot is complicated by a budding romancewith “The Boy Next Door,” a song in the HughMartin-Ralph Blane score that includes “The TrolleySong,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,”and the title tune. The screenplay and HughWheeler’s musical book are based on memoirs bySally Benson published in The New Yorker and thenin book form as The Kensington Stories.

The movie, one of MGM’s crown jewels, cameout in 1944 and was the second highest-grossingfilm in MGM history (after Gone With the Wind).

TUTS audiences will preview a new musicalprior to Broadway when Happy Days plays HobbyCenter May 12-24, 2009. Inspired by the sitcomthat made Henry Winkler’s “Fonz” a householdname, the musical has a book by Garry Marshall(who created the series) and score by Oscar-winning composer Paul Williams.

The show re-creates the carefree days of 1959in Milwaukee, where the malt shop is in danger ofdemolition—so the gang teams up to save it witha dance contest and wrestling match.

TUTS’ final show of the season June 16-28,2009, will be Cabaret, the acclaimed musicalbased on Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Storiesand John Van Druten’s 1951 Broadway adaptationI Am A Camera. With a book by Joe Masteroff, anda haunting score by John Kander and Fred Ebb thatevokes the music of Kurt Weill, it centers on SallyBowles, an English entertainer in a decadent Berlincabaret just before World War II. A potentcommentary on the hedonistic indifference thatpermitted the rise of the Nazis, it was an enormoushit both in 1967 and the 1998 Broadway revival.

Our ever expanding citycontinues to develop and Houston’s economicimpact only continues to grow exponentially.

The nonprofit arts scene in Houston plays a leadingrole in Houston’s economy, making it a $626 millionindustry. Recently, a Cultural Impact Study forHouston found that, “Nonprofit arts organizations inHouston, which spend $270 million annually, leverage aremarkable $356.3 million in additional spendingby ar ts audiences-spending that pumps v i ta l revenue into local restaurants, hotels, retail stores, parking garages, and other businesses.”

We hope you will continue to frequent Houston'sthriving arts community. The arts scene in Houstoncan only continue to grow with your help. Without it,TUTS wouldn't be able take its Beyond the StageCommunity Outreach on the road to teach musicaltheatre to underprivileged students in the GreaterHouston Area. Reaching children at Kipp Academyand the YMCA of the Greater Houston Area isimportant to us and hopefully makes a difference ineach ch i ld 's l i fe. Recent ly, TUTS' out reach programs expanded to MD Anderson CancerCenter and Texas Children’s Hospitals, where wevisit with young patients and teach musical theatreto children receiving treatment.

With your continued support, TUTS can produceworld-class musical theatre and expose children inyour community to the world of musical theatre. Asa r e s u l t , c o n t r i bu t i n g t o t h e a r t s c a n l e a dt o economic improvement in your own community.

Frank M. YoungFounder/Artistic Producing Director

In researching material on Hello,

Dolly!, the first article I uncovered

stated: “Hello, Dolly! is the story of

Dolly Levi’s efforts to marry

Horace Vandergelder and send

his money circulating among the

people like rainwater.” That brief

synopsis not only tells the

fantastical story of a 2 ½ hour

Broadway musical, but also

proved that plot-line to be true for

many of its original creative team

and stars as well. In its opening season, it won more Tony

Awards than any musical in history; and on its closing

performance on Dec. 28, 1970, it became the longest running

musical in Broadway history. However, the story from previews to

closing began out of town in a production that immediately

required massive rewrites--except for the brilliant music and lyrics

by the incomparable Jerry Herman. After seeing that first

performance, the creative team locked themselves in tight

quarters to restructure and refocus the musical which then went

on to become a Broadway smash.

It's hard to imagine the phenomenon that became Hello, Dolly!

after opening in New York, when costs of a Broadway musical

were minuscule compared to the cost of today's musicals. The

original 1964 Budget was-$350,000; Actual Cost-$420,000;

Weekly Break Even-$40,000; Top Single Ticket Price-$9.40;

Advance Sales Purchased in First Two Weeks After Opening:

$750,000 (sold only via mail and at the box office by 43 women

working around the clock to process the avalanche of orders).

This proved staggering box office sales prior to the era of the

home computer or Ticket Master!

The brilliant Broadway producer David Merrick, and the

production's director/choreographer Gower Champion, joined

Jerry Herman and book writer Michael Stewart to recruit a

dazzling array of American musical theatre and film stars to follow

Channing in the title role. This was an amazing first in Broadway

history and included Mary Martin, Ginger Rogers, Betty Grable,

Dorothy Lamour, Ethel Merman, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller and

Martha Raye. A bevy of Broadway beauties---affectionately called

“Jerry's Girls” --- then became the actual title for a new, 1985

Broadway musical Herman conceived starring Chita Rivera,

Andrea McCardle, Dorothy Loudon and yes, Leslie Uggams.

So now, sit back, relax and enjoy! As TUTS truly presents one of

"Jerry's Girls"---the incomparable Leslie Uggams---in her debut

performances as the incomparable Dolly Levi.

Enjoy!

In the fall of 2007, Theatre Under The Stars approached the Quilt Guild of Greater Houston about making a quilt to commemorate our 40th Anniversary Season.

Three Guild members volunteered to take on this creative project. Jennifer Hill, Jane Pilsga, and Donella Pyle spent over 200 hours and 4 months designing, piecing, quilting and finishing the quilt.

The “TUTS Top 40 Quilt” contains 40 Playbill covers from our most popular productions since 1968. There are also 40 stars in the border to represent 40 years of musical theatre excellence.

Several of the blocks in this quilt are traditional designs - like Log Cabin, Ohio Star, Snail’s Trail, etc. and many of the stars are outlined in glow-in-the-dark thread. All of the fabrics were pre-washed to check for bleeding and the quilt is completely washable.

The “TUTS Top 40 Quilt” will be auctioned off at the upcoming TUTS Top 40 Gala, April 25, 2008. Pre-bidding will begin late March.

Dolly arrives and quickly learns of Vandergelder’sattempts to court Irene Molloy. Catching him offguard, Dolly convinces him to explore other options-even offering “an heiress.” Her meddling starts to payoff after convincing Ambrose and Ermengarde theonly way to show Vandergelder wrong is to win thePolka Dance contest in a New York restaurant,Harmonia Gardens (Cornelius and Barnaby sneakaway as well excited by the idea of an adventure in thebig city). On their way out they sing Put On YourSunday Clothes joined by the townspeople of Yonkersfor a joyous Put On Your Sunday Clothes- Reprise.

Irene Molloy sits waiting for Vandergelder asher eager assistant Minnie Fay gossips. Ireneadmits she doesn’t really love Vandergelder, but ifshe ever did love a man she would attract him withRibbons Down My Back. In all the excitement ofthe city, Barnaby and Cornelius wander into IreneMolloy’s shop innocently flirting beforeVandergelder interrupts them. As the clerks hide inthe wardrobe madness ensues finally saved byDolly and the mismatched group’s songMotherhood. A very upset Vandergelder leaves toattend a parade on 14th street, and Dollypronounces the only way to make amends of thesituation is for Barnaby and Cornelius to take thetwo women out Dancing at the Harmonia Gardens.

She joins the crowd at the Fourteenth StreetAssociation Parade, where she spots Vandergelder.Although Vandergelder agrees to have dinner atHarmonia Gardens that night with Ernestina Money, the heiress Dolly mentioned earlier, Vandergelderdischarges Dolly as his marriage broker.Nevertheless she smiles, says, "Ephraim--he's asgood as mine!!!!", and runs off singing Before theParade Passes By .

Act IIAct Two opens with Cornelius and Barnaby

Rudolph, theheadwaiter at Harmonia Gardens, teaches his staffhow The Waiters’ Gallop should impress theircompany- especially Dolly. As dinner starts Corneliusand Barnaby stress over what their dates eat since theycannot afford the meal. Vandergelder, particularlydismayed with his date, Ernestina Money, doesn’thave time to be too concerned because he is busybeing furious at Dolly’s matchmaking skills.

Dolly majestically enters to the ecstatic waiter’sdelight who welcome her with a round of Hello,Dolly! showing how excited they are that theirfavorite customer has returned. Everything fallinginto her plan, Vandergelder tells Dolly he is havingan awful time. She then persuades him to think hewanted her to marry him, but playing coy sherefuses. To worsen the night for Vandergelder, hiswallet gets accidentally switched with one of hisclerks who realize now they have more thanenough money to pay for dinner.

Music plays and The Polka contest starts withDolly as a guest judge. Vandergelder for the firsttime sees Ambrose, Ermengarde, Cornelius, andBarnaby. Pandemonium erupts as he tries to sortout all the action, but the police arrive trying tosolve the disturbance. In court, Cornelius sings ItOnly Takes a Moment to fall in love with Irene. The judge, touched by Cornelius’ sentiment, releases everyone, but Vandergelder. Dolly says SoLong Dearie to the broken man saying she wouldleave him just like the others did.

Dolly returns the next day to straighteneverything out, Vandergelder proposes and her finalmatch has been made as Vandergelder sings theHello, Dolly!-Reprise. After the Finale Dollydeparts the stage with a wink saying,” Money, pardon the expression, is like manure. It’s notworth a thing unless it’s spread around, encouraging young things to grow.”
