Brief: To re-design a key product in Rogue Resolutions portfolio, the neuroConn tDCS mobile, is a non-invasive brain stimulation device which can be used for clinical trials and home use to combat various disorders of the brain. The product

will be based around the use of neuromodulation, a process which is used to enhance or suppress activity of the brain / nervous system in the research of brain function and the treatment of disease.

During my Industrial Work Placement at The National Centre for Product Design Research and Development (PDR), I completed a project for my client, Rogue Resolutions, who required a re-design of their product, the neuroConn tDCS mobile.

This product helps to treat various disorders of the brain such as depression and migraines, via the method of neuromodulation. The product is intended for home use by the patient to reduce the amount of GP and patient meetings, as well as increase patient compliance.

neuroConn tDCS Mobile - Concept Development

Concept Development during this project allowed a wide range of designs to be explored. 2D sketches and soft models were utilised in this stage to determine appropriate form, shapes and colour of the design.

Four key points were concentrated on throughout this stage of the project:

ACCURACYSIMPLICITY &EASE OF USE

AESTHETICS &ERGONOMICS

TECHNICALDETAILING

Page 6: Helena Lewis Product Design Portfolio 2014

A key focus of the project was rapid prototyping and design for manufacture. This was achieved by generating multiple prototypes of designs, through the method of CAD/CAM, using Solid Edge and Corel Draw to create 3D and 2D drawings which could be CNC’d, 3D printed and laser cut. 3D modelling ensured the best possible manufacturing method and gave the ability to conduct user testing with working prototypes.

Tick Tock Tan is a concept for a smart sun cream bottle. Designed to prevent over exposure to the sun in young women whilst sunbathing.

The ProblemThe social pressure to have a "sun kissed tan" is dominant in the population today, especially amongst young women. Young girls will binge tan whilst on holiday abroad, without taking proper precautions to defend themselves against the suns harmful radiation.

Research I conducted showed girls are not fully aware of the risks and damages which come with tanning, such as premature ageing, non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancer. The problem with sun tanning is that the damage does not show until later on in life.

The SolutionPhoto chromic ink on the bottle displays the possible skin damage that can occur from ‘binge tanning’ when exposed to the sun for too long, reminding girls this can happen to t h e m . T h e re i s a l s o a t i m e incorporated into the bottle, which warn girls when to re apply suncream throughout the day. To know which SPF is right for you, you would pick the bottle which resembles your natural skin tone, hair and eye colour.

Brief: To increase awareness of the benefits that come from consuming Welsh Water tap water.

This MSc project was in collaboration with Welsh Water, in which they wanted to encourage more people to drink their supply of tap water. My campaign design was aimed towards young adults in university.

This MSc project revolved around the form, shape and colour of product branding. In this module it was required to use a methodology for creating industrial design concepts which are aligned to the aspirations of their target markets. This process combined the methodology of Mark Gobe’s branding tools from his book ‘Emotional Branding’ with the form

alignment methodology developed by Professor Hyun Kim of Korea University. Using this methodology, I analysed the Aston Martin brand, and applied the brand image to a product which wasn't associated with this brand, an electric shaver.

Recover tackles the issue of patient compliance in regards to a patients commitment to follow their physiotherapy rehabilitation programme, as well as providing valuable data feedback to the physiotherapist on their patients progress. This system aims to reduce the amount of unnecessary arthroscopic surgery performed on knee injuries through utilising physiotherapy.
