the right way, with style! Can you believe it? Half of this

fiscal year is in the books. It hasflown by & we can look for the samefrom the second half of the year. Aswe push for a strong finish, this is agood time to talk about the fifthstrand in our DNA, Excellence. Atthe Area III meeting on March 28,Area Director Lowell French sched-uled an outside speaker who was

OUTSTANDING! The speaker said there are three ways to do ajob: the wrong way, the right way & the right way with style. The right way with style is another way of practicing excellence.I love how the speaker presented that concept. When I was a boyin school, my teacher told me that when I put my name on mywork, I am saying this is the work of Steve Jackson. I learnedthen that I wanted my work to be correct & neat. My teacherplanted the seed of excellence in my life. I didn’t just want topass, I wanted my work to be as close to perfect as possible.

In Sunday School, I learned about Joseph & Daniel. Eventhough they weren’t free men, they still did an outstanding job. Itdidn’t matter that they had lost their freedom. Their work was thebest. In fact, their work was so good, even their enemies wantedto employ them. That is amazing! Joseph & Daniel practiced ex-cellence. They did it the right way, with style!

I love the concept of excellence because it covers everything& answers ALL questions someone might have about the per-formance of their Civitan Club. Excellence is doing the very bestyou can in a professional manner. Excellence provides the an-swer to questions such as “Should we be an Honor Club?”,“Should we grow?”, “Should we earn banner patches?”, “Shouldwe give more than the minimum to Civitans At The Helm?”,“Should we check more than the minimum number of boxes onthe Honor Club Application?”, “Should we give to Jr. Civitan &Unrestricted Funds?”, “Should I recruit members?”, “Should werespect our district leadership?”, “Should we start a new club?”,etc. The response to each question is another question, “Do youwant to practice Excellence?” Do it the right way, with style!

I hope we get to the point where the minimum is not goodenough for any of us. The minimum is the enemy of excellence. If we let excellence totally govern our approach, we won’t be ableto contain our growth! On September 30, 2015, all of us will putour names on our work for the 2014-15 fiscal year. Will that workbe neat and professional? Will it be A+ work? Let’s spend thenext six months doing everything we can to make sure we can an-swer “yes” to those two questions and let’s do it the right way, with style!

On September 30, 2015, all of us will put our names on ourwork for the 2014-15 fiscal year. Will that work be neat and pro-fessional? Will it be A+ work? Let’s spend the next six monthsdoing everything we can to make sure we can answer “yes” tothose two questions.

G ov e r n o r - e l e C t ’ s M e s s aG e

Welcome Spring! What an exciting timeof the year as we Civitans “burst forth” withnew growth, new projects and new opportuni-ties to share Civitan with everyone we meet!Springtime usually means lots of activities toinvite family, friends, neighbors, co-workers/colleagues and community businesspartners to share in the “fellowship and serv-ice of Civitan.”From Easter egg hunts to Special Olympicstournaments and track & field events, proms

& formal dances to park clean-ups and re-vitalizations and golftournaments, Spring offers an opportunity for Civitans to partici-pate in a wealth of hands-on activities and showcase to thosenew to Civitan - just what we are all about!

As you plan your next special event or Civitan activity - thinkabout asking someone new to Civitan to participate! Civitanevents always include good friends, good food and a wonderfultime (even if some of the events/activities do include “work”)!Think about your last club event and/or activity and how muchfun everyone had!! Now, of course, you would love to share thatwith others, right?? (And, don’t forget to share stories and photosvia Facebook, our website and the Heartland Express newsletterfor everyone to enjoy!)

Spring also brings forth plans for your club’s new leadershipand the election of officers and Board members for the new Civi-tan year beginning October 1, 2015. Once elected, regionalLeadership Workshops provide the new officers with valuableresources and guidance as well as the opportunity to meet otherCivitans from across the Heartland District. The 2015 regionalLeadership Workshop schedule for Presidents/President-Elects isonline - please make note of the session(s) in your area and regis-ter your new officers immediately following their election sothey are well equipped to lead your club going forward.

Are you “seeing” a pattern develop here? Yes, these are itemsyou can check on the Honor Club application! As we approachthe midpoint of this Civitan year, recruitment/retention of mem-bers, service and fundraising projects, club election of officersand the completion of officer training are some of the elementsof your club becoming an Honor Club for 2014-2015. As youupdate your working copy of the Honor Club application, it willprovide your club with direction for the second half of the Civi-tan year and point you towards those activities that will help youreach your goal(s)!!

I was extremely honored and privileged to attend the Heart-land District Junior Civitan Convention in Cabot, Arkansas, onMarch 13th. I met a wonderful group of students, including thosewho were elected to District officer and Board positions, who areanxious to lead our District at the Junior Civitan level and lookforward to all they have planned during the upcoming year. I amlooking forward to meeting with Heartland Civitans at the SpringLeadership Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas in April. It willbe a wonderful opportunity for Civitans in the Heartland Districtto meet and learn together as we continue to grow and share ourCivitan story.Yours in Civitan, Marcia

tulsa Campus Civitan Goes virtual By Casey Worden, Virtual Communications Officer

One of the unique qualities about Campus Civitan atTulsa Community College Northeast Campus is that wehave the virtual options for students that have an extrabusy schedule and cannot attend in person on campus atselect time. It is a great feature with TCC, where you can attend through the Black-board Launcher. I actually use this option quite often as I am a full time student atTCC and full time mother with a very busy schedule. We have just recently kicked offthe new semester with a new time change for our meetings in hopes of better accom-modating students and future club members. I wanted to post some of the project andactivities we are planning for this semester. I would also like to mention that TCCCampus Civitan gets enormous support from Starlight Civitan Club and The BridgesFoundation as well and we are very thankful!•Program Speaker this month: Autumn Kinkade, OK Jr Teen Miss Amazing Pageant•Regional Transition Fair - we will have tables set up for Civitan and Miss Amazing•EcoFest KidsZone at NE Campus •Miss Amazing Pageant•Heartland District CivitanSpring Growth Conference •Regional Special Olympics Bocce Ball – Owasso OK

yes we Can Civitan ClubBy Elaine Johns, Yes We Can Civitan Club

We have been involved in the remembrance of our soldier’s sacrifices for more than eight years as an ongoingproject. We have hosted Memorial Day Events, fed veterans and their families, organized and sponsored a5K/Half Marathon Run, organized and sponsored an Annual Cruise and Car show, held fundraisers and pro-grams that benefited our veterans and families. In 2010, we got an opportunity to host a moving Vietnam Memo-rial Wall in our community. It looked so good there, Elaine Johns, Heartland Gov. 2008, contacted thecorporation that owned the walls and tried to secure one for permanent placement at our local Veterans Park.

After much discussion, site visits and prayer, we were given the honor of buying a retiring wall and place itpermanently in the park. Elaine Johns, Yes We Can member, was the volunteer project manager of thistask. The campaign to raise the funding began in 2012 after securing the wall in 2011. In 11 short months,Yes We Can Civitan hosted the “Welcome Home” reception for the Vietnam Wall.

More than 400 motorcycles escorted the wall to Enid, Oklahoma where it would be per-manently placed. The final payment was paid at that ceremony for a final total of $500,000.The ground breaking followed and the building program began. Yes We Can Civitan clubcontinued to sponsor events to raise money, provided the insurance for all the events heldand in November, 2013 we dedicated the park to the veterans of Vietnam. The total projectwas close to $1Million dollars.

We are so honored to have made this possible for our veterans. People from all over the na-tion have come to this wall to honor those who are on it. The wall is located across the streetfrom the gardens that Civitan built. Our next project is half way funded and we are going to es-tablish an Educational Center for the park. Only $50,000 more to go on that effort.

the difference one parent Can MakeBy Marty Rothwell, Program Director, The Arc

I often hear parents who ask why The Arc events aren’t in themedia more often. Although The Arc sends many invitations andnews story ideas, most are rejected because of conflicting events,non- interest, timelines and/ or breaking news. Last Thursdaynight, a parent of a Levy Legend basketball player who competesin The Arc’s Tri County High School Basketball League wasstanding in line at Subway to purchase a meal. Standing next toher she recognized the sports newscaster from TV 10. She askedhim if he had ever heard or our league and told him what a greatsports story it would make. She offered to buy his dinner, if hewould just stop by Friday and take a look at the competition at theYMCA Garvey facility.

As promised, he attended the games and was blown away. Hestayed for over an hour shooting footage and doing interviews. Ashe left, he stated he would feature this story on Friday night at 6and 10. The story he shared with the community about The Arc’sTri County Basketball League was simply outstanding. For some-one new to our community and new to this league it took him allof about 20 minutes to figure out the story would be very specialto many people. I have received numerous phone calls and over30 people, mostly strangers, have informed me they saw thisnews story and how impressed they were. One phone call told mehe coached a little league basketball team and they would be at-tending The Arc madness tournament to support our players andto teach his players what heart is all about. The story was featuredon Friday and Saturday on several news casts. If you have notseen it, click here.

Sometimes the contact to the media has to come with a per-sonal touch. Just look what the cost of a meatball sandwich re-sulted in. It is the old story of who do you know and who do theyknow. We all know how important community awareness is but itis up to each of us to make that awareness a reality. If you haveany media contacts or media ideas please contact Mary Brown atThe Arc 943-1191 or contact Marty Rothwell at the same number. One person can and did make the difference...

Ed note-The Arc is one of the organizations that the Civitan

Club of Wichita supports. This was from the Arc’s recent newslet-

ter. Perhaps it will give you ideas on getting your club name out

into the community during April- Civitan Awareness Month,

eldorado Civitan ClubTV Auction The

58th annual El Do-rado Civitan Televi-sion Auction is aSUCCESS! Withabout 200 items do-nated by local mer-chants, Civitanswere able to auctioneach item off withthe average bidbeing 60% of retailvalue.

The Auctionbrought in morethan $19,395.00 andafter expenses theClub expects to netabout $15,000.00which will be distributed to various programs in the community.

The Auction always brings the club members together in fel-lowship and of course, brings a lot of hard work. More than threemonths planning go into making the auction a success. After 58years of conducting the TV Auction, members stated this year'sevent ran smoother than ever before. That is because of the workand cooperation of each member of the El Dorado Civitan Club.

The club began the annual event in 1957. For 20 years local TVstation, KTVE, broadcast the auction in beautiful black and whiteas a public service. Members thought they had reached the end ofan era when the station announced it could no longer afford togive free air time to the Civitans. Sometimes good deeds do get re-warded, and this was the case when Immanuel Baptist Church of-fered assistance. The church was just beginning a TV ministry andoffered its facilities and cable access to the club. That partnershipnow allows the club to reach much of Union County’s populationwith high definition video via cable and the whole world via thechurch’s internet connection.

For the last two years the club has exhibited all its major items(those with a retail value exceeding $300) on Facebook and cellphone apps have made the acceptance of credit cards possible. This has allowed the club to receive bids from as far away asFayetteville, Arkansas. Local restaurants and fast foods providefood and soft drinks for workers. Many who are not able to attendthe weekly lunch meeting are able to work during the auction. Thepublicity, both “auction night” and in the days leading up to theevent, is an important recruiting tool.

Money raised from the auction is distributed to local projectsincluding 66% to South Arkansas Developmental Center for Chil-dren and Families, 10% to the video ministry at ImmanuelChurch, and the balance to individuals and organizations benefit-ing children and/or the disabled. As the economy improves, mem-bers look to returning the event to its glory days of profitsexceeding $30,000!

Well done El Dorado Civitan Club, well done!

Civitan Club of topekaOn Wednesday, February 4, the Civitan Club of Topeka celebratedClergy Appreciation Week at our luncheon meeting at Top of theTower. We had the largest number of clergy in attendance (10) thatwe have had in a good many years. Club member Dave Fisher pre-sented the program and all enjoyed the stories he shared. This year we had 17 men's, women's, and youth teamssign up to participate with the generous support of a total of 24sponsors. We would like to thank each and every one of them forhelping us achieve our goal of handicap accessible playgroundequipment at Harmon Park. Currently we are anticipating installingthe equipment within the next few months depending on weatherconditions. The equipment has been made and is sitting in a ware-house ready for installation. Any funds raised from future eventswill be used for expansion. A special thanks also goes to this yearshost, 7th and Mueller Church of Christ for allowing us to use theirgym andkitchen/diningarea.
