Sharon Eadie and Pearl Soltys, Ex- ecutive Officers of the College of Occupational Therapists of Manitoba and MSOT, respec- tively, continue to nurture all of the leaders that sit on the MSOT Board of Directors. In the next two years, I know that we will ex- perience great excitement about the profes- sion of occupational therapy within Manitoba. 2014 marks the 50 th anniversary of MSOT, and a great celebration waits to be unveiled. Further, in 2015, Manitoba will host the na- tional Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) conference. It is evident that we have much to celebrate, and much to anticipate as OTs within our great province. Recently, one of my mentors, Theresa Sulli- van, forwarded the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) Presidential Address to my attention, as delivered by cur- rent AOTA President, Virginia Stoffel. Stoffel (2013) discusses her practice of “heartfelt leadership,” as a leader who, “offers his or her authentic self, grounded in an emotional con- nection that engenders trust, commitment, and engagement” (p.634). This quote reso- nated with me as I considered my personal leadership, and my priority to connect and engage with others. As the elected President of MSOT, my commitment is to engage with occupational therapists across the province to advocate on behalf of our profession. One of my goals in my term as President of MSOT is to engage others to pursue their own leadership of the profession of occupational therapy. Your leadership may take many different forms, ranging from providing a thoughtful definition of occupational therapy, to submitting a piece for the Update, to volun- teering to support occupational therapy in your community. Whatever your leadership may reflect, I urge you to develop your own capacity as a leader of our profession. As Manitoba prepares to take the stage as a focal point for occupational therapy in 2015, I challenge you to consider how you can con- tribute to leadership of the OT profession within Manitoba. In the words of Stoffel (2013), “We must embrace the belief that every member is a leader” (p. 637). Stoffel continues in encouraging the leadership of others, in challenging, "…and no one will fight for you to be happy in your work, to feel ful- filled, and to work at your highest capacity to meet society's occupational needs unless you do" (p.635). All of us are tasked to be leaders in our profession, in our workplaces, and in our communities. As I begin my term as MSOT President, I have the utmost confidence in my fellow Board Directors, and in the individual practitioners that comprise the community of occupational therapy within Manitoba. I look forward to continuing to engage with you, and welcome your comments, questions or feedback at any time to my confidential MSOT email address, [email protected] . Sincerely, Katie Kitchen, O.T. It is my great pleasure and honour to deliver my first address as MSOT President. The path to my leadership with MSOT has been influ-enced by so many, far too many to list by name. Specifically, however, I have devel-oped as a Board member of MSOT under the wise and gracious leadership of our past Presidents, Gina DeVos, Andrea McIntyre, and my immediate predecessor, Bronwyn Fontaine. Sharon Eadie and Pearl Soltys, Ex-ecutive Officers of the College of Occupational Therapists of Manitoba and MSOT, respec-tively, continue to nurture all of the leaders that sit on the MSOT Board of Directors. I am so grateful to each of you for your passion and dedication to our wonderful profession.

In the next two years, I know that we will ex-perience great excitement about the profes-sion of occupational therapy within Manitoba. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of MSOT, and a great celebration waits to be unveiled. Further, in 2015, Manitoba will host the na-tional Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) conference. It is evident that we have much to celebrate, and much to anticipate as OTs within our great province.

Recently, one of my mentors, Theresa Sulli-van, forwarded the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) Presidential Address to my attention, as delivered by cur-rent AOTA President, Virginia Stoffel. Stoffel (2013) discusses her practice of “heartfelt leadership,” as a leader who, “offers his or her authentic self, grounded in an emotional con-nection that engenders trust, commitment, and engagement” (p.634). As Manitoba prepares to take the stage as a focal point for occupational therapy in 2015, I challenge you to consider how you can con-tribute to leadership of the OT profession within Manitoba. In the words of Stoffel (2013), “We must embrace the belief that every member is a leader” (p. 637). Team Occupational Therapy — A closer look at this year's

MSOT initiative:

Occupational Therapists are more than just health care workers.

We are community leaders.

We are proud of the many OTs and OT students who participated in various walks and runs this year to support our client populations. Six charities were supported this year with an amazing $4230 raised in total for these organizations! Out of the 38 OT an OT students who participated, 342.1 kilometres were either run, walked or biked. It was a great year of giving back and we look forward to next year's events.

Do you have a cause that is important to you and that MSOT members can participate in? Let us know and your cause may be the next Team OT initiative!

Email [email protected] with the subject 'Team OT'.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN THE MEDIA...

Over the past few months, MSOT has been working diligently on promoting Occupational Therapy in the community. Back in August, our Communications Coordinator, Julie DeGroot, had the opportunity to be on Breakfast Television to discuss “5 ways to Prepare your Child for Kindergarten”. In September, she returned to speak with host Jeremy John about “Ways to Manage Arthritis”. Her most recent segment “Tips to help students focus in class” aired in October. Recently, MSOT’s primary focus has been develop-ing our advocacy strategy; having exposure on live television has indeed brought focus to our profession. We are pleased with the progress thus far and look forward to more MSOT initiatives in the coming months.

The 2013 Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held at the Deer Lodge Center on Tuesday, October 27th. MSOT board members had the oppor-tunity to discuss the current goals, 2014 budget, and things to look for-ward to in the coming year. MSOT bid a fond farewell to outgoing president, Bronwyn Fontaine and welcomed new president, Katie Kitchen, along with nu-merous new members. Thank you to all those to attended the AGM in person, virtually, and via Proxy. We could not have done it without you. Hope to see you next year!
