    The origin of the name derives from William

    Benjamin Hearne whose home included part

    of this site for many years. Hearne was a local

    town Councillor well known and respected

    throughout the area.

    His grandfather, also William Hearne,

    established a hugely successful furniture-

    making business in 1840 which later became

    Dancer & Hearne. The business was renowned

    for their beautifully made Windsor Back chairs.

    In the late 1920's control of the business was

    handed to William Benjamin and his two

    brothers, Fred and Cecil. By 1938 the company

    had around 500 employees. They manufactured

    almost half a million chairs, producing

    nearly 2,000 every working day. The business

    continued successfully until the late 1960's

    when it was taken over by Parker Knoll.

    Due to the contribution Mr Hearne and his

    family made to the community for many years

    it is a mark of respect that the family name is

    remembered in the community and the vicinity
