Dear Partners,

It has been a privilege to edit the last issue of the Comenius Healthy

Habits magazine.

I know I speak for all at Carpenters when I say that the Comenius pro-

ject has allowed us fantastic experiences. We have learnt about coun-

tries in a way that would never have been possible without the first

hand experiences from this project. The Healthy Habits magazines have

reminded us about the importance of healthy living. As well as this Pad-

dington Bear has thought us about what life is like in each of our coun-

tries

I would like to say a big thank you to all the teachers and pupils that

have worked so hard to make this project a success. It has been a

pleasure working with such fantastic people and we hope that we can

keen in touch in the years that follow.

We hope that you enjoy our final issue with the theme of the World

Cup. There

are some challenging puzzles and quizzes to keep you busy during your

holidays which I am sure you are all looking forward to!!!

Yours in Comenius,

Miss McKenna,

Carpenters Primary School

June 2010

Mr Nortmann, we heard that you are a Paralympic Medallist. In which Paralympics did you take

part?

It started with England in 1984, and my last participation was in Athens in 2004.

The longest trip was to the Sydney Paralympics in 2000. You see, I travelled around the

world.

Has your life changed after your victory at the Paralympics?

Yes, of course. My sporting success has improved my self-convidence.

I’m the chairman of the Archery Club in Werlte and I need this self-assurance to

negotiate with sponsors to get money for the club.

How did you get to Archery?

In 1976 I had a motorbike accident. From our local hospital I was transferred to a special

hospital in Bavaria near Munich. There I got the diagnosis: Paraplegia.

For one week I wasn’t able to talk to anyone. Then the doctors told me I should try any kind

of sport. I had done different sports before my accident like football and track-and–field.

I saw a man in a wheelchair playing basketball. He was very good.

My ambition was to become better than him. In those days archery was too expensive for

me. The equipment cost more than 1,000 DM.

When I was back home, I started playing basketball in Meppen, later I changed to

track-and-field sports and finally in 1989 I started with archery.

Were you very nervous before your first Paralympics?

Sure, and not only before the first Paralympics. Every time it sent shivers down my spine.

How did you feel after your first gold medal? Did you celebrate?

It was in Seoul in 1988. I won the gold medal in the Pentathlon. It was a great feeling and

of course we celebrated.

And what was the most beau- tiful moment at the Paralym-

Page 7: Healthy Habits Issue 5

7

pics?

For me it was always the final celebrations. When the lights go out and on the screen you

can read the words “SEE YOU AGAIN IN FOUR YEARS IN …..!” This is always a very emo-

tional moment.

Did you meet any other famous athletes?

Yes, I met Michael Stich (Tennis), Franziska van Almsiek (Swimming) and Ulrike Meyfarth

(High Jump) to name a few. Other famous people I met during my career were our Presi-

dents, Richard von Weizäcker and Roman Herzog.

Is it difficult for you to live with your disability?

Well, in the beginning after the accident it was very difficult. But with the help of my girl-

friend ( We are now married for more than 30 years ), my family, friends and sports I

made it. I think the most important thing is a good social environment.

How often do you practise? And is there any special practise before a competition?

Normally I practise three times a week, and before competitions five times a week.

But a few days before the competition it’s mor important to train your powers of concentra-

tion.

And what about food. What do you eat and drink before a competition?

Nothing special. For someone sitting in a wheelchair it’s important not to eat too much.

I would say I now eat about half as much as I did before my accident.

One final question: Are you interested in other sports?

For me in first place there’s archery, next is archery and then comes archery.

Mr Nortmann, thank you very much for giving us the

chance for this interview.

We are Kalam and Tia-J’Nae, both aged 11, were chosen to be a

part of Carpenters Construction Crew in July 2009. Read on to find out

the amazing things we have done and spectacular people we have met...

Every 6 weeks we attend a CC (Construction Crew) workshop and

visit the Olympic site to see the development and progress taking place.

Later on we go to the ODA (Olympic Delivery Authority) /media flat

and discuss a diverse theme each time e.g. environment and sustainabil-

ity. Along with having some visitors coming in and talking about their

job and responsibilities they take on in that role. When we arrive back

to school we hold an assembly the next day to report back on all the in-

teresting facts we learnt.

As a part of the Construction Crew we were picked to go visit the

Queen alongside 38 other members. Whilst we were there we also met

Boris Johnson and some young athletes, we managed to get a picture

and a few autographs. We had an amazing experience.

We have met so many people like President Jacob Zuma (the presi-

dent of South Africa) and have been to so many places like the Site op-

eration centre (SOC) and many more .From this experience we have

built our self confidence and learnt a lot and now its nearly come to an

end however we still have a presentation to do at city hall on Monday

6th July 2010. We really enjoyed the whole experience.

In Year 2 children have been looking at flags of the countries

taking part in the World Cup. They then designed a flag to

represent themselves.

What symbol can I

choose to

represent me?
