What is the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute?

The HBHMI is an annual event designed to nurture the interdisciplinary roles of school personnel in the adoption of

physical activity as a learning tool. Learn from leading neuroscientists, educators and psychologists the best practices

and evidence-based research to creatively incorporate physical activity into teaching practices and enhance students’

ability to learn. We invite all educators who are motivated to transform schools into movement-centered buildings to

attend this once-a-year opportunity.

What are the goals of HBHMI?

To review current research on the relationships between curriculum planning, school-based physical activity,

and learning outcomes.

To infuse wellness into the classroom culture.

To provide educators with the skills and knowledge to implement brain-based learning with their students.

To develop a multidisciplinary school-based team that will implement exercise and learning initiatives in their

schools.

To provide a forum for discussion and collaboration among like-minded educators.

To assist in the development of an action plan for each school building.

What should I expect?

You can expect two days of collaboration with your peers working on a common goal. Teams and colleagues should

come ready to listen to other’s experiences, and ready to share their own experiences and ideas. Please dress in

comfortable attire suited for physical activity and summer weather.

Who should attend?

Interdisciplinary school teams and individuals interested in transforming their school into a movement-centered building

should attend the Institute. Attendees may include classroom teachers, nurses, health and physical education teachers,

administrators, school counselors and any other motivated individual regardless of their official role.

What’s new in 2016?

For the last three years we have hosted an average of 200 educators at a two day conference designed to nurture the

interdisciplinary roles of school personnel in the adoption of physical activity as a learning tool.

With so many returning attendees, we are excited to make adjustments to the framework of our event and to take the

opportunity to explore local strengths in school wellness in the areas that matter most to our attendees.

In 2016, one goal area will permeate all of our sessions: To infuse wellness into the classroom culture.

We know that this means so many different things to our individual school populations and want to foster the

development of a wellness culture in your school, specifically integrating wellness concepts into teaching practices.

Through peer to peer sessions and expert-led content presentations, our attendees will have the opportunity to gain the

perspective of many like-minded educators doing diverse work in the field.

August 16 – Day 1:

7:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

This day is all about new perspectives. Attendees will have access to over twenty five peer and expert led breakout

sessions on Active Learning, Social Emotional Learning & Mindfulness, Employee Wellness, and School Partnerships.

August 17 – Day 2:

8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Translate the previous day full of content curation into a manageable plan for you and your colleagues to implement.

Attendees will pre-register for 1 of 2 planning sessions where they will have a dedicated facilitator to develop a plan.

This Institute is sponsored by the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation.

The Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation is a community nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance

the health and wellness of area residents by providing education, funding and programs that motivate people to adopt

healthy lifestyles.

The Foundation awards grants to area nonprofit organizations which use their resources and services to develop and

enhance programs that support our purpose of promoting health and wellness. Grant awards are based on four key

priority areas which include improvement in healthy behaviors through schools. Since 2004, more than $7.5 million has

been awarded to the public and private schools within the Foundation’s service area.

In short, the Foundation’s role is to help area residents improve their health and well-being every day. By doing so, we

are creating a more dynamic and more vibrant community in which to live now… and into the future.

Conference Fee $50 per person

Conference fee: Includes all conference offerings and

meals. Excludes overnight accommodations.

PAHWF School Collaborative Schools – Please note that

the reduced rate which was provided in previous years

will not be effective this year. We have significantly

reduced the overall conference rate to account for this

and hope the change to the fee structure will promote

attendance. We cover facility fees and meals per

registrant, and the ratio of registrations to actual

attendance in the previous years has not been strong

enough to continue subsidizing attendee costs. We

thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Accommodations: There are no overnight

accommodations at Pottstown Middle School. If you are

in need of a room we recommend the Holiday Inn

Express or the Hampton Inn, both located in Limerick.

Bringing Youth to the Table

Keynote Speaker: Dan Rhoton, Hopeworks ‘N Camden

Too often, we talk about interventions, poverty, trauma, or any of the

other obstacles to success with youth, we talk ABOUT youth rather

than with them. Dan will share his experience working with the

Hopeworks Youth Healing Team, a group of youth who have trained

over 800 teachers and youth development professionals across the

region about the intersection of trauma and education.

About Dan:

Beginning in the juvenile justice field, Dan has developed extensive expertise in the use of restorative practices and trauma informed methodology both inside the classroom and in the larger community. Over the years, Dan has been recognized numerous times for his work with young people, receiving the Meritorious Service Award from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Philadelphia Diane Watson City Community Service Award, the Distinguished Educator of the Year for Eastern North America, and, most recently, the inaugural Platforms for Prosperity Fellowship. At Hopeworks, Dan is responsible for the overall implementation of the learning culture of Hopeworks throughout the entire Hopeworks organization, managing all program aspects of Hopeworks and corresponding staff, including Hopeworks’ training program, residence, and business internship program.

The session will serve as an overview of the HWHF program. HWHF is an intensive childhood obesity treatment program for overweight/obese children ages 8-12. A short video containing clips from the actual HWHF program will be shown followed by a food tasting and fun physical activity for participants.

Designing Self Care Habits Nancy Miller

Building upon the Self Care foundation presented at the 2015 HBHM presentation, "Self Care is Not Selfish", this session will guide the participant to discover their self care needs, determine essential self care habits, and design action steps to create self care habits. Research about habits, self care, and compassion fatigue will be incorporated into this presentation. Brought to you by Pottsgrove School District.

Mental Health, Prevention and Mindful Wellness: The Perspective of a Child Within a Divorced Family Joe Boyle, Ann Fink

We hit on a variety of topics with our participants, aside from divorce…self-esteem, self-efficacy, drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, etc. We will share an endorphin rush by playing dodgeball, if time permits. Brought to you by Daniel Boone School District.

Using Action Based Learning in your Classroom

We will utilize our Action Based Learning (ABL) Cart to demonstrate how teachers can utilize ABL in their classroom. Participants will receive instruction on using Action Based Teaching strategies to teach concepts, along with using Action Based Learning Center Activities. Worksite Wellness Programming in Your School Lucie Bergeyova

Healthy employees are a critical component of a thriving school. Creating a culture of staff wellness requires a support system, active communications, promotions and engagement. This session will provide you with tools and ideas on how to implement wellness strategies into the school culture. Practical examples will be discussed. Boyertown Area Senior High Physical Education teachers will present a fitness program, Fitness Fridays, which is used to introduce students and staff to new exercise programs and to increase participation in lifelong physical activities. Using Healthy Snacks throughout the School Day to Increase Learning Potential, and Infuse Wellness into the Classroom Culture Kara Shifler, Penn State PRO Wellness

Learn about why snacking is so important in children related to growth, liver storage, and blood sugar responses – key functions related to learning. Discuss examples of healthy snacks that are classroom friendly, how to get administrator buy in, and how to overcome common push backs. Come to find out about other schools who have implemented snack breaks and their success stories, related to test scores, behavioral health, and more.

Mental Health First Aid

Tricia Malott, M.Ed, Tory Bright, BA

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of

mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. This course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. Yoga 4 Classrooms Jen Marshall, LSW

Yoga 4 Classrooms is a research based, low cost, simple, effective and sustainable tool designed for the classroom, which facilitates students' physical, mental, emotional and social personal growth. The Yoga 4 Classrooms features 67 yoga and mindfulness-based activities, divided into 6 categories: Let's Breathe, At Your Desk, Stand Strong, Loosen Up, Imagination Vacation, and Be Well. What I Learned as a District Wellness Coordinator Nancy Miller

As a School District Wellness Coordinator, Nancy discovered there are both obstacles and opportunities on the road to Wellness. She'll share her experiences of what worked, what didn't and why she still thinks it's important. Jump Rope for Fun and Fitness Lucie Bergeyova

In this “hands-on” session, you will learn routines to improve your students’ endurance, strength, coordination, power, speed, agility and balance. The activities presented can be modified to your students’ needs and can be easily implemented as part of a warm up or cool down, or as a class as a whole to fit your curriculum needs. In addition, we will cover topics such as: space requirements, jump rope sizing and safety. You will participate in solo and partner jumps, long rope jumps and cooperative activities and games. Community + School Collaborations - Why They Work Holly Parker, TriCounty Network

Many area school districts have had proven success with community partnerships. In several instances, these collaborations have filled needs created by budget cuts and have most certainly enhanced educational opportunities for students without cost to taxpayers. The Community+School Collaborations presentation aims to provide best practices and focal points for schools looking to develop strong partnerships with community organizations.

Brainpower Breakout! Come to this session to engage your brain in a unique and creative way. Participants will experience a tailor-made breakout to activate their brainpower. The breakout will integrate technology, movement, and concrete ideas for the classroom that participants can utilize at their school. Breakout EDU offers ultra-engaging learning games for people of all ages. Games

Mindfulness In The Classroom Brian Aikens

Creating mindfulness in the classroom can be a smooth process without taking time away from academic instruction. Attendees will learn what mindfulness is, how to begin a mindfulness practice, and implementing practices with their students. We will discuss the neuroscience and research on mindfulness for adults and youth, as well as how to share practices with parents. Attendees will also be introduced to a classroom toolkit that includes "Chill Skills" they can utilize with their students. The goal of the presentation is to help students bring awareness to how they think, understand, and manage their emotions and behaviors so they can flourish in and out of the classroom. Game On: Making the Case for a Healthier School Culture Deanna Lacek Philpott, Action for Healthy Kids

Action for Healthy Kids works with schools to develop effective plans to implement district wellness policies, wellness programs and practices, and school-family-community partnerships. During this session, participants will learn why schools should be leading the fight against childhood obesity and how Action for Healthy Kids can help. Participants will work together to learn how to influence others and inspire collaboration on improving health and wellness. Participants will also learn best practices for improving a school’s health and wellness and identify goals for the 16-17 school year. Lastly, participants will learn about grant opportunities and the USDA’s Healthier US Schools Challenge Initiative.

The Kinesthetic Classroom: Teaching and Learning through Movement Mike Kuczala

This highly interactive 3-hour session will enliven your K-12 classroom and content through the use of dynamic movement. Participants will experience a six-level framework for using movement with a purpose including preparing the brain, providing brain breaks, supporting exercise and fitness, developing class cohesion, reviewing content, and teaching content. The session will fully explore the connections between fitness and cognition, implicit learning and academic success, state management, and why movement enhances the learning process.

Mindfulness in Education: Promoting Calm and Focus Across the Curriculum Jenny Mills

Teachers, students, and counselors in the United States and beyond are incorporating simple mindfulness-based practices into their everyday routines to promote self-awareness, mental focus, and stress management. During this session, participants will learn basic mindfulness practices, validated by brain research, that streamline into everyday life to support and enhance the teaching and learning environment.

Balanced or Burnt-Out? The Importance of Self-Care Colleen Tillger, LPC, CAADC

This workshop will review the 5 basic categories of self-care: Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Social, and Spiritual/Community, discuss how stressors and/or neglect in each category can affect personal wellness and professional performance, and explore how we can "trick" ourselves into meeting these self-care needs in maladaptive ways that ultimately do more harm than good. Participants will be guided through self-assessments in each category, identify areas for improvement, and create personalized self-care balance plans. They will also be taught how to utilize regular self-care "check-ins" to support ongoing personal wellness.

An Overview of Learning Dr. Chris Gilbert, RTSG

The cognitive processes that make up learning will be discussed. Common learning myths will be dispelled, and practical advice will be given to make classroom instruction more effective. Active learning and other wellness techniques will be fit within this framework.

The “Mighty Purpose” Matthew Cubbler

Ready to be inspired? Learn more about your inner strengths

and reshape your ideology for effective leadership through

this interactive session about purposeful leadership and the

mentorship of school-aged children. Matt Cubbler is a world-

class human behavior specialist, body language expert, and

published author. The session will provide a snapshot of the

“Mighty Purpose” one of the most sought after leadership

development programs in the area. From the childhood death

of his learning disabled brother, to careers as a U.S. Army

Intelligence Soldier, law enforcement officer, and serial

entrepreneur, Matt will share a number of life lessons and

experiences and demonstrate how personal encounters of

grit and perseverance can lead to the discovery of your

“Mighty Purpose”, thus shaping you as a highly effective

leader, educator, and mentor.

Mindfulness: Self-Care for Educators Josh Gansky

Through the practice of Mindfulness, participants will be given time to pause and focus on their own care and well-being. This class is designed for the self-care of educators. This is an opportunity for educators to reduce stress, recharge, reflect, and reconnect. This time together will be both educational and experiential. When we take care of ourselves, we can be at our best, have more balance in our lives, and be more present for the people in our lives. This enhanced presence allows us to better connect with our families, friends, colleagues, and students. In addition, as adults, we want our children to lead healthy lives, to learn healthy coping skills, and to make healthy choices. When we care for ourselves, we can be more present for our children and we can model healthy behaviors for them. Self-care allows us to better connect with ourselves and with the individuals who may cross our paths each moment of the day. We can actively enhance our lives and the lives of others.

Supporting Students' Self-Care Colleen Tillger, LPC, CAADC

Participants will learn how they can introduce the topic of self-care to students by utilizing the 5 basic categories of self-care: Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Social, Spiritual/Community. They will explore creative and engaging methods of helping students identify how they can practice balanced self-care and safely manage stressors by utilizing healthy coping skills. We will also review warning signs that a student may be struggling in one or more areas, how teachers can support these students, and how self-care "check-ins" can be incorporated into the classroom.

Science of Exercise in School Based Programs Dr. Chris Gilbert, RTSG

Straight from the field and presented by active researcher, Dr. Chris Gilbert. Chris will discuss the science of exercise and recent techniques and programs that have used exercise in schools. Highlights from his experience in the field will be shared along with program results from a variety of implementations nationally. If you are new to the conference or interested in learning about creating an evidence-based activity intervention in your school, this session is for you.

Integrating Social Emotional Learning into K-12 Curriculum Thom Stecher

In this experiential workshop, we will present a kindergarten through twelfth grade social emotional learning toolkit that is designed to integrate social emotional learning skills with academic contact. We will explore research-based, step-by-step tools, strategies, discussions, activities, and fully integrated lesson plans focused on building student success. This team-focused, planning workshop offers a district-wide, staff and student driven perspective on the implementation of a comprehensive, K-12, school community, wellness, mindfulness, resilience, and Social Emotional Learning. Key factors that influence success will be addressed, such as: the role central office and building-level administration must play, the importance of professional development, the power of student leadership development, on-going sustainability, effectively measuring successes, finding opportunities for growth, and the necessary relationship that must be present between administration, staff, and students. Every team will craft an action plan and create long-term goals for the

wellness of students and staff in their district.

Creativity and Innovative Problem Solving Strategies Adrean Turner

The need for creative problem solving and decision making has arisen as more and more problems require creative insights in order to find suitable solutions to implement strategies and programs are cost-effective and engaging based on limited resources both financial and personnel.

Using the “6 Thinking Hats” process developed by Dr. Edward de Bono, this session provides a strategic approach to transport away from habitual thinking and behaviors to explore new avenues, take risks and enter into a state of play and discovery to find new and useful ways of seeing and doing things to accomplish complicated objectives.

Individuals will work in teams to discover tools and resources for the development of strategic plans that have been challenging as a result of "old model approaches. Using "outside of the box" approaches groups learn ways to successfully implement complex programs or initiatives that involve various stakeholders, clients and organizations.

In partnership with the Medical University at South Carolina (MUSC), the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation has facilitated two years of competition to determine the healthiest school building in our service area. The Wellness Achievement Celebration will provide an overview of the competition, demonstrate the great work of our participating competitors and celebrate top achievers in school wellness. The Foundation plans to run the program next year and will be looking for additional schools to participate.

Brian Aikens has been working with students who struggle

with severe emotional and behavioral issues since 2003. After obtaining his degree in Special and Elementary Education, he taught at Firhouse School in Dublin, Ireland. He returned to the U.S. and earned his Master’s Degree in Clinical & Counseling Psychology from Chestnut Hill College. Brian received the Five Mindfulness Training at Blue Cliff Monastery and was also a student of Dr. Amy Saltzman, a leading mindfulness researcher and author. He serves as an educator for the Spring-Ford Area School District, as well as a psychotherapist and mindfulness instructor with Insight Minds. Rooting his philosophies in awareness, compassion, and healthy relationships, he supports children and families to make life more meaningful.

Lucie Bergeyova was always active and involved in many

sport activities. As a member of the Czech National Biathlon team, she competed in various venues across Europe, Asia and North America while also working toward a Master’s Degree in Sport Sciences. Her experience in the Health/PE field includes seven years of teaching at KidsPeace, four years in the Allentown School District and five years in the Boyertown School District where she also serves in a role of a H/PE and FCS Lead Teacher. She is also working as a fitness instructor at Boyertown YMCA teaching Cardio Classes and Swimming.

Joe Boyle earned his B.A. in US History, M.Ed. in Elementary

Education and two teaching certifications: Elementary Education and Secondary Social Studies from Millersville University. He served as a Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) for adolescents, having worked at Caron Treatment Centers for six years, prior, to his current status as a 6th grade teacher (18 years) and Student Assistance Coordinator (16 years) at the Daniel Boone Middle School. Joe has taught Group Counseling at Alvernia University, and currently serves as a primary lecturer for the Berks County Underage Drinking Program, and works an independent Interventionist. He has extensive experience working with Axis I diagnosed adolescent males, with whom he worked with at the Children's Home of Reading on its RTF Unit for five years; and served as a Clinical Therapist for five years with CONCERN Counseling Services. Joe is the founder/co-facilitator of the DBMS, "CHANGES" program for students who live in divorced or estranged family environments; teaching students copy skills and efficacy concepts of wellness while dealing with life's daily interludes of anxiety and depression related to their familial circumstances.

Tory Bright is the Director of Coordinated Regional Mental

Health Services Office for the five SE Counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia). Her career in public mental health and human services spans over 30 years, primarily working with persons and systems supporting individuals who have severe and persistent mental illness. She has worked in crisis services, case management, state mental hospital services, justice related systems and in service development for community mental health systems.

Tory is a Mental Health First Aid instructor for Adult, Youth, Higher Education, and Public Safety modules. In addition, Tory is a Quality Evaluator for National Council for Behavioral Health MHFA. She is also a National GAINS Center Trauma trainer, and a facilitator in Sequential Intercept Cross Systems mappings for behavioral health and criminal justice systems. Tory is on the Philadelphia MHFA Advisory Board, NAMI-Montgomery County Board, and Montgomery County Youth Detention Board. She holds a degree from Villanova University in Human Services Administration.

Aaron Christ is a personal trainer, and owner of A Fresh

Start Fitness, working with children and their families in the Healthy Weight, Healthy Families program. He works with the families to provide the knowledge and skill set needed to engage in safe and effective physical activity while in the program and after completion.

Matthew Cubbler is a 1989 Pottstown HS graduate, US

Army Intelligence Veteran, 24 year police officer and co-founder of MaxOut Strength Systems and MaxOut Strength Studio. Over the past 20 plus years, Matt has been instructing, teaching, mentoring and developing young minds through his unique approach to developing leadership skills in today's youth. Through MaxOut, Matt has been going out into the schools - telling his life story and helping kids develop leadership skills necessary for success.

Ann Fink holds a B.S. in Psychology and M.Ed. in Elementary

and Secondary School Counseling from Kutztown University. Before becoming a school counselor, Ann worked in the field of behavioral health for three years through the positions of Therapeutic Staff Support, Mobile Therapist, and Behavioral Specialist. This allowed her to work with children who struggled with psychological disorders by supporting them inside the home and also in schools. Ann has been a school counselor for four years at Daniel Boone Area School District, serving one year in an elementary setting and three at the middle school level.

Josh Gansky is in his 14th year as a school counselor,

working at both the middle school and high school levels. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Syracuse University and his Master’s Degree in K-12 and Higher Education School Counseling from West Chester University. For the past four years Josh has been working with adults and kids to emphasize the importance of self-care through Mindfulness. He received his Mindfulness training and supervision through Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Mindfulness Institute. He believes that when we take care of ourselves, we can be at our best, have more balance in our lives, and be more present for the people in our lives (family, friends, colleagues). Also, as adults we want our kids to learn healthy coping skills, make healthy choices, and decisions. When we care for ourselves we can be more present for our kids and model healthy behaviors for them. Connecting and building relationships is at the heart of all we do and it starts with self care.

Jessica Garnett is a Registered Dietitian working with

children and their families in the Healthy Weight, Healthy Family program. She provides nutrition information/education tailored to each family's needs to help get them on the path to a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Chris Gilbert is a researcher who studies the wellness

behaviors influence academic outcomes. He has completed studies that use targeted exercise to improve outcomes in school, at work, and in life. Some examples include studies that examine the benefit of biking on academics and among ADHD students in association with Specialized Bikes, the effect of using of the Kinect device in schools, the effectiveness of police wellness programs on job performance, and the use of exercise on a clinical population at schools, among others. Chris completed his PhD in Psychology at McMaster University in Canada.

Michelle Hanna has been in education for 15 years.

Technologically savvy and wellness oriented she creates engaging lessons for students that challenge and motivate them. Her enthusiasm for education is evident in all aspects of her work.. Most recently she has taken on the role of Technology Instructional Coach. She has been instrumental in the 1:1 technology roll-out, providing professional learning opportunities that focuses first on best-practice instructional methods and then on the use of the technology to support those practices. Michelle also possesses highly effective interpersonal communication skills which help to establish trusting collaborative learning environments for learners.

Erica Johnson attended Temple University and played

collegiate rugby for the Owls. In 2012, she graduated from Temple with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology and a Teacher Certification in Health and Physical Education. Having always been involved in sports, she developed a passion for fitness and a love of learning about the physical capabilities of the human body. During her senior year of college, she stumbled upon CrossFit and has not looked back since. Erica teaches health and physical education at Boyertown Area Senior High School.

Mike Kuczala is a leading authority on using movement and

understanding the brain/body connection in education. His keynotes and professional development programs have been enjoyed by tens of thousands of teachers, administrators, and parents around the world. The Academic Director for the Regional Training Center, and President of Kuczala Consulting, Mike is the coauthor of the Corwin best-seller The Kinesthetic Classroom: Teaching and Learning through Movement. Mike’s 2nd book, Training in Motion was released in June of 2015. His standing room only presentations have been experienced in such diverse settings as EARCOS, ATD, Forum for Innovative Leadership, ASCD and SHAPE.

Tricia Malott is an Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid

Instructor and MHFA Marketing/ Outreach Coordinator for the Southeast Region Mental Health Services Coordination Office. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in social work from Bloomsburg University and Master’s Degree in Education from Arcadia University

Tricia’s entire professional career has been working in Developmental Disabilities, Adult and Children’s Behavioral Health, Special Education, Mental Health Advocacy, Education and Training. Throughout her last 33 years Tricia has held various roles working in partnership with adults, children and families in direct helping capacities as well as in administrative and leadership roles. She has worked as an Adult Mental Health Program Specialist and Child and Adolescent Service System Program Coordinator (CASSP) for Montgomery County Office of Behavioral Health as well as served the role of Interagency Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN.) Most recently she has worked for Access Services where she helped develop and coordinate Adult Respite as well as served as Community Liaison. Tricia is a NAMI Board Member and currently chairs NAMI’s Youth Sub Committee. Tricia ‘s passion for Mental Health First Aid comes from the belief that together can educate people about mental illness, hope and recovery. It is stigma, fear and isolation that stand in the way of a person seeing hope for the change and possibilities they deserve in their lives. In addition to teaching the Adult and Youth MHFA Curriculum, Tricia is also certified to teach the Aging and Higher Education Curriculum as well.

Jen Marshall, LSW is a Liscenced Social Worker, where she

has been practicing at East Covetry Elementary for 15 years. She is also a certificated Yoga 4 Classrooms instructor.

Nancy Miller is a Registered Nurse with decades of

experience as a Certified School Nurse and is passionate about Health and Wellness. She has always been interested in Preventive Care, Health Education, and Lifestyle changes to help individuals discover ways to foster optimal health. As a Certified Health and Wellness Coach with Wellcoaches, Nancy is amazed at how valuable the coaching process is for transformation. I enjoy learning, reading books, cycling on local trails, traveling and cooking food that tastes good and is good for you, too. I also enjoy having meaningful conversations.

Jenny Mills, a former classroom teacher, is the Director of

Development for Educational Programming at the Penn Program for Mindfulness. She is the founder of Roots & Wings, LLC whose mission is to make mindfulness accessible to teachers, youth, and families. In her workshops and classes, Jenny gives teachers and counselors mindfulness strategies to support teaching and learning. Matthew Moyer has been the principal of Rupert

Elementary School in the Pottstown School District for the last 10 years. Prior to this he was assistant principal of Schuylkill Valley elementary, and a 5th grade teacher in the Spring-Ford School District. In addition, Matt is the district's Safety Coordinator, Certified Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Trainer, Coordinator of Elementary 21st Century Programs, and an Adjunct Professor at Montgomery County Community College.

Nicole Fusco attended Lock Haven University where she

earned her Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education. Nicole earned her Master's Degree from Emporia State University in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. She has been very active in dance and aerobics throughout her life. Nicole has just completed her 8th year of teaching and her third year teaching at Boyertown Area Senior High School.

Britney Oxenford is a third grade teacher at Rupert

Elementary. She has worked in the Pottstown School District for ten years, four of which have been in third grade at Rupert. Britney serves as a co-chair of Rupert's Leadership Team. She is active on the ABL team and is a member of the Wellness Committee. She is the building's social studies representative. Britney participates in Rupert's Impact visits and has organized a staff workout club.

Holly Parker is the Executive Director of the TriCounty

Community Network(TCN). TCN brings together organizations, businesses, agencies and individuals to problem solve for community needs. A seasoned nonprofit professional, Ms. Parker holds a Bachelor's Degree from West Chester University and a Master's Degree from Colorado State University and is active in our local school community.

Deanna Lacek Philpott, as the PA State Coordinator for

Action for Healthy Kids, Deanna is responsible for managing Action for Healthy Kids’ efforts in Pennsylvania to support school wellness initiatives. She has been working in the education field for the past nine years and loves working with students, teachers, administrators, and communities, especially in the areas of outreach and training. Deanna has her B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University and a M.A. in Sociology from American University. She is also a certified Project Manager with experience in managing curriculum development.

Dan Rhoton, beginning in the juvenile justice field, Dan has

developed extensive expertise in the use of restorative practices and trauma informed methodology both inside the classroom and in the larger community.

Over the years, Dan has been recognized numerous times for his work with young people, receiving the Meritorious Service Award from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Philadelphia Diane Watson City Community Service Award, the Distinguished Educator of the Year for Eastern North America, and, most recently, the inaugural Platforms for Prosperity Fellowship.

At Hopeworks, Dan is responsible for the overall implementation of the learning culture of Hopeworks throughout the entire Hopeworks organization, managing all program aspects of Hopeworks and corresponding staff, including Hopeworks’ training program, residence, and business internship program.

Dr. Tina Schrode-Fries, a life-long learner, earned her

Doctorate from Widener, Master's from Villanova and Bachelor's from Gettysburg College. Tina has been teaching for over 20 years in the Boyertown School District. Presently, Tina is co-teaching the Gifted Program for grades 4, 5 and 6 with an emphasis on movement and technology. Tina strongly believes movement and technology are a highly effective ways to engage students as well as a critical vehicles for students to learn to harness and use intelligibly. A Group Fitness Instructor, Tina is passionate about Health and Wellness. Tina heads the Wellness Committee for her school.

Kara Shifler is a Registered Dietitian who serves as a project

coordinator for the Penn State PRO Wellness Center. She utilizes her background in counseling and school nutrition for health promotion to assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating outcomes related to childhood obesity. Kara holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Messiah College and obtained her RD status through the Sodexo Allentown program.

Thom Stecher is a nationally-recognized motivational

speaker and educational consultant. He specializes in self-esteem, wellness, and student assistance programs. Raised in a family of educators, Thom believes that education is a life-long process and that we all teach best what we most need to learn. It is therefore imperative that we teach each other.

Thom has spent over 40 years educating and mentoring students, teachers, administrators and board members. He is one of the original developers of the nationally-recognized and acclaimed Masonic Model Student Assistance Program and has expanded the model to developmentally appropriate programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The program is in use in over 30 states, and in Canada.

Thom's current passion is providing school board and administrative retreats and professional learning opportunities for K-12 staff. The primary focus of this work is the integration of social emotional learning with academic achievement and helping school districts transform into Whole Child centered environments. Thom believes that budgets and test scores must be subordinate to people. Caring for students and staff must be our highest priority. Connection, compassion, and courage are the future of education.

Colleen Tillger, LPC, CAADC is a Licensed Professional

Counselor (LPC) and a Certified Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CAADC) in Pennsylvania. She is part of a group practice in Pottstown, Psychology and Counseling Associates, and provides customized professional training and consulting services.

In addition to her 14 years of clinical experience working with clients, she has over 10 years of experience as a trainer and consultant. Ms. Tillger has developed and facilitated trainings for professionals in social services, criminal justice, healthcare, and education.

Some of her areas of expertise and specialized training include: mindfulness, healthy coping skills, life balance, individual empowerment, addictions and substance abuse, behavioral and process addictions, codependency, anxiety, body image and self-esteem issues, healthy relationships, interpersonal violence, and trauma.
