The American Heart Associationwarns individuals with existingheart disease or stroke, and
those who may be at high risk forthese illnesses to use caution duringheavy snowfalls and wintry condi-tions. This includes people with astrong family history, high bloodpressure, high cholesterol, smokers, those who are overweight and thesedentary.
For these individuals, the stresses ofthe cold weather may pose extra con-cern and the association is urgingindividuals to use caution to avoidsudden cardiac death and hypother-mia.
RECOGNIZE THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHERMIA
Hypothermia occurs when yourbody can’t produce enough energy tokeep the internal body temperaturewarm enough, causing it to fall below
normal. It can kill you. Heart failurecauses most deaths in hypothermia.Symptoms include lack of coordina-tion, mental confusion, slowed reac-tions, shivering and sleepiness.
Children, the elderly and those withheart disease are at special risk. Aspeople age, their ability to maintain anormal internal body temperatureoften decreases. Because elderly peo-ple seem to be relatively insensitiveto moderately cold conditions, theycan suffer hypothermia withoutknowing they’re in danger.
STAY WARMPeople with coronary heart disease
often suffer chest pain or discomfortcalled angina pectoris when they’rein cold weather. Besides cold temper-atures, high winds, snow and rainalso can steal body heat. Wind isespecially dangerous, because itremoves the layer of heated air from
around your body. Similarly, damp-ness causes the body to lose heatfaster than it would at the same tem-perature in drier conditions.
To keep warm, wear layers of cloth-ing. This traps air between layers, forming a protective insulation. Also, wear a hat or headscarf. Much of yourbody’s heat can be lost through yourhead and ears are especially prone tofrostbite. Keep your hands and feetwarm, too, as they tend to lose heatrapidly.
AVOID ALCOHOL BEFORE HEADING OUTDOORS
Alcohol gives an initial feeling ofwarmth, but this is caused byexpanding blood vessels in the skin.Heat is then drawn away from thebody’s vital organs. Alcohol con-sumption and physical activity inharsh winter weather conditions canincrease the likelihood of hypother-
mia. The American Heart Association
recommends the following tips tohelp respond to and prevent suddencardiac arrest:
LEARN CPR, HANDS-ONLY CPRCPR: About 80 percent of all out-of-
hospital cardiac arrests occur in pri-vate residential settings, so beingtrained to perform cardiopulmonaryresuscitation (CPR) can mean the dif-ference between life and death for aloved one. Effective bystander CPR,provided immediately after cardiacarrest, can double a victim’s chanceof survival. The American Heart
Hypothermia risks rise with droppingtempsFor kids, seniors and those with heart disease

Association conducts courses con-venient to everyone. To access acourse listing, log on to the AHA’s website at www.heart.org/cpr
Hands-Only CPR: Hands-OnlyTMCPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouthbreaths. It is recommended for use bypeople who see an adult suddenlycollapse in the “out-of-hospital” set-ting (like at home, at work, in a park). It offers an easy to remember andeffective option to those bystanderswho have been previously trained inCPR but are afraid to help becausethey are not confident that they canremember and perform the steps ofconventional CPR.
It consists of two steps:1) Call 911 immediately (or tell
someone to do that). 2) Begin providing high-quality
chest compressions by pushing hardand fast in the center of the chest withminimal interruptions.

Robot ‘performs’ surgeryOrange Regional Medical Center recently provided an opportunity for visitors and staff to “test drive”a simulated version of their robotic surgery equipment. The da Vinci Si HD Surgical System is advancedtechnology used for a minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. Robotic surgery is an alternative toboth traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. With da Vinci, surgeons are provided withthe precision, dexterity and control of traditional open surgery, while only requiring, in most cases a1-2 centimeter incision. The surgical system consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon’s console, four interactive robotic arms and a high-performance vision system. The surgeon is able to view high-ly magnified 3-D images of the body’s interior. Robotic-assisted surgery offers several benefits forpatients, including: reduced trauma to the body, shorter recovery time, less change of infection andless postoperative pain. Keeping up with the exercise – even in the cold
Tips for staying active from Access Physical Therapy & Wellness
Humans are not meant tohibernate. Just as tulips needwinter nourishment from
the Earth to strongly bloom inspring, we need to continue tonourish our bodies( including exer-cise) during winter so we too canbloom come spring. If the thoughtof getting outside to exercise makesyou dive under the covers, insteadchoose one of the many indoorworkout options. Below are just afew of the many choices. Rememberto always consult a physician beforebeginning a work out regimen.
• Walk at an indoor location, like amall. If you need extra motivation toget yourself to the mall, join a walk-ing group. This will help you stay
accountable to someone other thanyourself.
• Join a health club. This will provideyou with a large variety of physicalactivities to choose from every week.
• Create a home gym. This does-n't have to be expensive. You caneasily set up a great workout routinewith just a set of dumbbells, anexercise ball and a jump rope. Getall of this for around $50.
• If you have stairs where you live, spend as little as 20 minutes at atime climbing up and down. Thismakes for a very intense and effi-cient workout.
• Get wet. Find a local indoor pool
you can use. Try swimming, wateraerobics, or even just walking orrunning laps in the water.Remember, even if you are not noti-cably sweating, the resistance of thewater enhances your work out.
• Visit a library. Usually locallibraries offer exercise videos youcan check-out for free. Pick-up anew one to try out every time youreturn the previous video. This pro-vides a way to find which kind ofroutine works best for you.
If aches or pains prevent you fromstaying active, a physical therapistcan help to diagnose and treat yourpain and get you back to doing thethings you love.

Janice Center owner Tanya Cohen was listen-ing to what people were saying. Some didn’tcare for Zumba because it was too fast and
hard on their knees, though they liked the up-tempo music. Others liked yoga, but wantedsomething more from it.
So she went to work on a new program thatwould appeal to both types. After five months ofresearch and experimentation, Cohen hit on aconcept that integrated hip, contemporarymusic to traditional yoga poses. Rockin’ Yogawas born at The Janice Center.
Now in its seventh month, the twice-weeklyclass is catching on. There is a core group offive to six regulars as well as another four orfive who pop in here and there. And sinceJanuary, some new additions have becomeregulars.
“It’s taken some time, but it’s the type of
class you have to try and experience to see whatit is,” said Cohen. “My regulars absolutely loveit – they say it’s the best fitness-type of classthey have ever taken.”
As Cohen describes, the class gives yoga a newhip tempo with original choreographed rou-tines set to classic rock music. The one-hoursession transitions from one traditional yogapose to another. There is no dead silence, butconstant motion.
“It’s really a perfect balance of yoga, stretching, cardio and strength training,” says Cohen. “It’sdifferent and it’s fun. Come and check it out.”
The class meets on Tuesday (5:30-6:30 p.m.)and Thursday (6:15-7:15 p.m.). The fee is $10per class or you can purchase a 12-class pack-age for $100. The first class is free. For moreinformation, please contact The Janice Centerat 482-3324.
