PUSHUPS AT PHOENIX PARK RUN THE GREY STREET HILL

STRETCH OUT AT WILSON PARK

Most people know the rocks at the Phoenix Park

labyrinth as prime seating for concerts, but they

can also be a great spot to work on some strength

and core exercises.

There’s few accomplishments that

feel as good as being able to look

down a hill you just ran – and the

Grey Street hill is a doozy. Run up

and rest on the walk down, then

repeat. If you’re looking for some-

thing a little easier, try Main Street,

Grand Street, or Galloway Street.

Need more of a challenge? Try

Brackett Avenue.

It’s probably one of the

most important parts of

your workout. Before you

start sweating (and after

you get done), rest up on

the grass at Wilson Park

and spend plenty of time

stretching those muscles.

STAIR SteppingAn easy exercise to do any-

where there’s a step or curb

(so, all over downtown Eau

Claire) is a step routine.

Go FOR A RUNFollowing the trail from the labyrinth

at Phoenix Park to the end of Owen

Park (under the Water Street bridge)

is almost exactly one mile.

POWER UP THE STAIRSSimilar to running hills, running stairs is intense,

but it feels great when you’re done. And there’s

no better set of stairs than the ones that lead

from Farwell Street to the East Side Hill.

Play ballHead out to Demmler Park (or

Boyd Park if that’s closer to

home) to shoot some hoops

while the kids play on the play-

ground. Both parks also have

good grass for soccer, catch, or

anything else.

PULLUPS AT THE PLAYGROUNDYou may have to wait in line

behind a few kiddos, but

use the playground at Owen

Park to get some pullups or

chinups in for a great upper

body workout.

BRING THE WHOLE FAmILY!

Why is your focus on everyday fit-ness, as opposed to more specific, athletic training?

Fitness is a lifestyle, not a quick

fix. There are no shortcuts.

With small, continual improve-

ments you can create daily

habits and a lifetime of health

and happiness.

What’s your favorite place to work out outside in the area?

I love running the trails and

coming across the Phoenix Park

bridge and heading towards

Banbury Place. There’s nothing

quite like running through a city

that has water right downtown.

It’s very relaxing but engaging

at the same time.

Any song suggestions for a workout downtown?

When I’m out running or doing

interval training I like to listen

to bands like Mat Kearney, In-

grid Michaelson and American

Authors. They all have a lot of

upbeat songs and are all great

people. A lot of their songs will

be featured in my upcoming

Workout DVD. When I’m wind-

ing down, I would recommend

bands such as Jonsi, Volcano

Choir and S. Carey, of course.

Look forward to a new fitness DVD from Jeff Rogers this year. For more info on RogCity Fitness, go to RogCity.com or find him on Facebook.

YOU DON’T ALWAYS HAvE TImE TO GET TO THE GYm. And on top of that, sometimes it’s nice to get outside and bask in

the beauty of your community. Luckily, our downtown is ripe with workout options that don’t require a treadmill

or even a dumbbell. We talked to Jeff Rogers of RogCity Fitness about how to use the environment around us –

right here in Eau Claire – to stay healthy throughout the summer months.

Running can be a solitary sport. You don’t need team-mates or coaches. You don’t need opponents. Other than shoes – and, these days, probably an iPod – you don’t need gear. All you need is the willingness to pound your feet on the pavement.

Mike Olson used to be one of these solo runners. He rose at 4:45am and pushed himself for miles. As he got more involved in the sport, however, he met more runners, and eventually joined the Indianhead Track Club, which for 45 years has fostered physical fitness and fellowship in the region. “It’s kind of changed my running, and changed my life,” Olson says. “My best friends now are the people I train with.”

For Olson and others who run as a group activity, per-sonal connections and accountability are key. At one point, Olson motivated the younger runners he trained with; now they have surpassed Olson and provide him with motivation. “It’s not an individual sport,” he says. “If you connect with the right people, they’ll make you better. They’ll make you faster. They’ll make you enjoy the sport that much more.”

The Indianhead Track Club, which has about 200 mem-bers, is a volunteer, nonprofit group that sponsors seasonal races (the Spring Fever 10K, the Tortoise and Hare, the Carson Park 5K and 10-mile, and the Frigid 8 and Thermal 3) as well as helps with numerous runs, including the RCU Charity Classic, the Buckshot, and the Eau Claire Marathon. The club also organizes several weekly workout groups.

While some members are elite runners, Olson says the group is welcoming to newcomers of all skill levels. He notes that the “track club” name doesn’t indicate all mem-bers are whippet-thin elite athletes: “It’s not a majority of people who are really fast,” he says. “It’s a group of people who really love running.”

Depending on their stage in life, some would-be run-ners need more motivation than others. For women – par-ticularly women with young children – encouragement is offered by Moms on the Run, a Minnesota-based business with franchises around the Upper Midwest, including the Chippewa Valley. As a mother of four, Sarah McCutcheon knows it’s hard to find time to exercise (or do anything else for oneself) when there are little kids in your life. “Our main motto is fitness, fun, and friendship,” says McCutcheon,

who is co-head coach and co-owner of the local franchise with Shelly Peters. Attendance is taken at Moms on the Run classes, which usually meet two or three times a week for 18 weeks, and women fill out nutritional calendars as a way of keeping each other accountable. “You get that feeling of belonging somewhere and knowing you’re truly missed if you’re not there,” McCutcheon says.

McCutcheon says she gets a better workout running with friends than alone. While every hill and incline are challenging while running solo, “With a group sometimes I feel like I blink my eyes and it’s over.” She emphasizes that women interested in trying the program shouldn’t be intimi-dated: Participants often have never run before or haven’t exercised in years because of the demands of motherhood. “It’s so important to get out of the house and build your self esteem and feel good about your body again, and breathe that fresh air,” she says.

SMART CYCLE SHOPPING HOw TO BuY YOuR NEw BIkE

Now that the summer season has hit the Chippewa valley, it’s time again for riders to take to their

bikes and hit the trails! Volume One asked some local bike shops what they would recommend for

young adults looking to get some fitness in now that the warm weather is here to stay.

mID-Distance + Long DistanceRoad bikes featuring thinner-width tires and higher pressure are best suited for long-distance rides rang-ing from 35-50 miles around the local area. Also included would be drop-down handlebars and a high-er gear ratio, allowing for faster speed than a hybrid or shorter distance bike. Those looking to travel 20-30 miles could do so with the same bike, but they could probably get away with flat handlebars and wider-sized tires. –Eau Claire Bike & Sport, Eau Claire

VolumeOne.org Jun. 12, 201437

Check out 700c-sized wheels. They allow for an extra foot-and-a-half travel per rotation of the wheel, allowing for a big mechanical advantage. –Anybody’s Bikeshop, Eau Claire

An endurance road bike featuring high gears allowing for faster speeds or a mountain bike if looking to go off-road. These bikes would have fatter tires and lower gears to allow for safer riding. –Spring Street Sports, Chippewa Falls

It’s not all about distance when choosing a bike but rather the customer’s concept of fit, their perception of fuel and their enjoyment of the whole ride. –Riverside Bike & Skate, Eau Claire

SHORT DistanceFor bikers looking to travel shorter distances, a hybrid would be recommended. This style of bike is more for people interested in taking in the scenery or having conversations while riding rather than a more aggres-sive position suited for road bikes. –Eau Claire Bike & Sport, Eau Claire

For distances under 10 miles still in that residential area, those looking for some fitness biking are rec-ommended the Raleigh Cadent which sports a good variety of gears and multi-use tires. This model is somewhat similar to the Specialized flat-bar road bike, so either would do. –Erik’s Bike Shop, Eau Claire

Hybrids have been most popular for around town, casu-al use recently for this shop. They have been selling a ton of their Electra Cruisers or what they like to call Townies. These are bikes meant for residential, urban riding. These are similar to the Manhattan Cruiser Smoothies, featuring a higher front end and forward pedals allowing for a comfortable ride. –Riverside Bike & Skate, Eau Claire

Flat-bar road bikes are recommended here for mid- to long-distance residential riding. The Specialized Vita, a female-specific geometry bike, and the Specialized Sirrus, a male-specific geometry bike, have been most popular in their shop this season. –Erik’s Bike Shop, Eau Claire

For those looking to ride shorter distances, the shop recommends a more specific brand of bike. The Manhattan Cruisers Smoothie is a bike featuring forward-positioned pedals and a higher front end, allowing for a super comfortable ride. Rather than taking efficiency into account, this bike focuses more on the comfort aspect of biking. –Anybody’s Bikeshop, Eau Claire

SO LONG, SuCkERS wHAT TO DO ABOuT wISCO BuGS

Not-so-fuN facts: Ticks are patient – really patient. They can hang out on the underside of a leaf for months waiting for a moving meal (that’s you). And unlike fast-acting mosquitoes, ticks can hitch a ride on your body and remain feeding there for days. There are 15 kinds of ticks in Wisconsin, but only two usually bite humans: the dog tick (a.k.a. the wood tick) and the tinier deer tick (a.k.a. the blacklegged tick, which may carry Lyme disease).

MiNor aNNoyaNces: If one of these creepy crawlies bites you, the best way to remove it is with a tweezers by gripping it as close as possible to where it’s attached and pulling firmly. Don’t use a match, nail polish, or other home remedy. Just yank the sucker out, then dis-infect the bite.

Bigger proBleMs: Luckily, according to the Centers for Disease Control, a deer tick must be attached for 36-48 hours before it can transmit the bacteria that carry Lyme disease. That means if you remove the tick quick-ly, you’re in the clear, so thoroughly inspect your body’s nooks and crannies after a hike. If you have contracted Lyme disease, early signs usually appear in three to 30 days, and can include flu-like symptoms (fatigue, aches, chills, fever, etc.) and a bull’s-eye-shaped rash around the bite site. If this happens, see a doctor; Lyme disease is usually treatable with antibiotics.

How to avoid tHeM: Take precautions when walking in tick-y areas – that’s pretty much anywhere with long grass or brush – especially during the May-July period. Make a fashion statement by wearing long sleeves and pants and tucking your pant legs into your socks. Repellants with DEET or permetrin also can keep ticks at bay.

Getting outside for exercise or recreation this time of year can put you in touch with Moth-

er Nature’s most bountiful gifts to Wisconsin: Bright summer sunshine. Lush forest pathways.

Enormous bloodthirsty mosquitoes. Notice we said “bountiful gifts,” not pleasant ones. All too

often, getting in touch with nature during a Wisconsin summer means getting in touch with ma-

levolent creatures hell-bent on ruining your good time – and we’re talking about invertebrates, not

Illinois tourists. Here’s a rundown on the Badger State’s most notorious insects, the ailments they

can carry, and how you can keep them at bay.

Not-so-fuN facts: Over 50 kinds of mosquitoes live in Wisconsin, and all of them want to suck your blood. (Well, at least the females do.) According to a handy (if frightening) UW-Extension booklet, Outdoor Hazards in Wisconsin, “up to 100 mosquitoes can emerge per square foot of water surface per day in good breeding habitat” and “more than 60 percent of these adults will migrate approximately 10 to 20 miles from their breeding site in search of a blood meal.”

MiNor aNNoyaNces: We don’t need to tell you that mosquito bites itch. Rubbing alcohol and mild ammo-nia can help, as may over-the-counter treatments like calamine lotion.

Bigger proBleMs: Mosquitoes can carry lots of diseases, especially in other parts of the world, but the two main ones you have to worry about in our neck of the woods are West Nile virus and La Crosse encephalitis. (Bet you didn’t know there was a dis-ease named after La Crosse!)

How to avoid tHeM: Common-sense steps fall into two categories: eliminating mosquito breeding sites and keeping bugs from biting you. Mosquitoes hatch in standing water (old tires, gutters, birdbaths, you name it), so beware of those. And to protect your pre-cious skin from their pointy proboscises, avoid going outside at dawn and dusk; wear long clothing; and apply insect repellents (such as those with DEET) when you go outdoors. Mosquitoes are also attracted to dark colors, movement, and body odor, so wear white, stay still, and try not to sweat. (Good luck with that last one.)

west Nile virus was first identified in Africa

and reached Wisconsin in 2002. Since then, the

number of identified cases in the state has fluctu-

ated annually (there were 21 last year). While 80

percent of those who contract West Nile don’t get

sick, according to the Wisconsin Division of Public

Health the other 20 percent may show symptoms

including “fever, headache, eye pain, muscle aches,

joint pain, a rash on the trunk, swollen lymph nodes,

nausea, and vomiting.” Fewer than 1 percent face

the worst symptoms – “extreme muscle weakness,

inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), paraly-

sis, and coma” – which in rare cases can be fatal.

Symptoms appear three to 14 days after you’re

bitten by an infected bug, so beware of symptoms

even after your bites stop itching.

la crosse eNcepHalitis, which was first iden-

tified in La Crosse in 1963, is a (fortunately) rare

mosquito-borne virus that most often exhibits itself

in children. As with West Nile, many of those who

contract the virus don’t become ill, but others do,

showing symptoms including “fever, headache, nau-

sea, vomiting, and tiredness” and – in extreme cases

– encephalitis, seizures, and coma. If this sounds like

you, get to a doctor.
