MAYONNAISE TREATMENT FOR HEAD LICE

Because of the resistance some head lice seem to havedeveloped to head lice shampoos, on occasion, a"Smother Treatment" may be recommended. Also, there isgrowing concern that frequent repeated use of some headlice shampoos can be dangerous and unhealthy forchildren.

The purpose of the "Smother Treatment" is to "smother" thelive lice. This treatment does NOT kill eggs/nits, however,it is found that nits appear to come off easier after amayonnaise or oil treatment.

Success of this treatment depends on the close attention tothe application instructions and diligent follow through withthe treatment plan.

DIRECTIONS FOR MAYONNAISE TREATMENT(WARNING: Do not use this treatment if sores are presenton the scalp. Refer to your doctor).

1. Use only 100% real mayonnaise, not low-fat, fat-free oreven salad dressing like Miracle Whip.

2. Apply generously to hair making sure all the hair is wellsaturated.

3. Cover the hair with a plastic wrap or a shower cap for atleast 2 1/2 hours. (WARNING: Do not leave child alonewhile wearing plastic wrap or shower cap.)

4. Rinse out with warm water.

5. COMB OR PICK OUT ALL NITS. Mayonnaise does notkill eggs/nits. If eggs/nits are left on the hair, they willcontinue to hatch! (See section on Tips for Nit Removaland Combing).

6. Hair can now be shampooed with a regular shampoo.

7. REPEAT THIS SAME PROCESS THE NEXT DAY ANDEVERY FOUR DAYS FOR 3 WEEKS.

8. DO HOUSEHOLD CLEAN-UP THE SAME DAY.Refer to section on Household Clean-up Tips.

9. Child may return to school after the second treatmentand all nits have been removed.

OLIVE OIL TREATMENT

The Olive Oil Treatment is another choice to use if you optto go with the "Smother Treatment". Like the MayonnaiseTreatment, success of this treatment depends on closeattention to the application instructions and diligent followthrough with the treatment plan. The Olive Oil kills live liceby smothering them. IT DOES NOT KILL THE EGGS/NITS!

DIRECTIONS FOR OLIVE OIL TREATMENT

1. Part hair and apply oil directly to hair, saturating the hairand scalp.

2. Cover the hair with a plastic wrap or shower cap. Leaveon for 8 hours. (It helps to keep the cap in place if abandana or scarf is tied over it.)

3. Leaving the olive oil in the hair and using a metal nitcomb, REMOVE ALL THE NITS from the hair.Refer to section on Tips for Nit Removal and Combing.

4. Wash hair with a regular shampoo.

5. REPEAT NIT REMOVAL STEP WHEN HAIR IS DRY.

6. REPEAT THIS SAME PROCESS THE NEXT DAY ANDEVERY FOUR DAYS FOR 3 WEEKS.

7. DO HOUSEHOLD CLEAN-UP THE SAME DAY.Refer to section on Household Clean-up Tips.

8. Child may return to school after the second treatment andwhen all nits have been removed.

REGARDLESS OF TREATMENT USED, CONTINUE TOCHECK FOR LICE AND NITS FOR AT LEAST 10 DAYS.MAKE IT A PART OF ROUTINE FAMILY HYGIENE.

HOUSEHOLD CLEAN-UP TIPS

Lice do not live off the human for more than 48 to 72 hours. It is unlikely that eggs/nits on hairs that have been shed willhatch since they need the warmth of the body to matureand hatch and will need a blood feed soon after hatching.

Cleaning activities are best limited to the chores listedbelow and done on the same day as the treatment.CLEAN ONCE AND THEN CONCENTRATE ON HEADS!

CLEAN-UP CHORES

HEAD LICEWHEN YOUR CHILD COMES HOME WITH HEAD LICE...

DON'T PANIC!

Believe it or not, there is life after HEAD LICE!Head lice infestations continue to e a problem in mostcommunities. This is often a frustrating problem for bothparents and schools to deal with. We hope the followinginformation will help you to identify and treat your child forheld lice safely and thoroughly.

THE HISTORY:Head lice have been a parasite of humans since recordedtime. Head lice can happen to any one and getting headlice has nothing to do with cleanliness. Head lice do notjump or fly, they "scurry" through the hair. They are usuallytransmitted by contact with a person who has them or withcontact with their clothing. When people come in closecontact with each other, such as children do in school, it iseasy to pass head lice along

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:One of the first symptoms of head lice may be an itchyscalp. Most people are not aware of what to look for whenchecking a head for head lice. Here are some pointers:When examining a head look for:1. A small insect about the size of a sesame seed. Theyare usually light brown or grayish in color. They movequickly and do not like light.2. Nits/eggs may be seen on the hair strand. They are tiny,silvery-white and oval shaped. They can be very difficult tosee and are usually attached securely to the hair.Unlikedandruff or lint, they cannot be readily removed from thehair. Most often they are fairly close to the scalp initially.3. Lice bite and such blood form the scalp so red marks orscratch marks can sometimes be seen on the scalp or neck.

IF YOU FIND LICE......1. Notify the school that your child has head lice.

2. Follow one of the treatment plans included in thisbrochure.

3. ABOVE ALL.....DON'T DESPAIR!
