Unit Description: (1 items)

This course introduces students to the significant influence of the poststructuralisttradition on critical theory. It begins by setting out the historical context in whichpoststructural thought developed, namely the global political revolts of the 1960s, and theevents of May '68 in France in particular. These events played a significant role intransforming dominant postwar structuralist thought into poststructuralism. Havingestablished this context, the course introduces students to the main features ofstructuralist thought, setting out its origins in the linguistic theory of Ferdinand deSaussure and its subsequent application in politics, literature and the humanities.

The next section of the course traces the various ways in which the structuralist traditionwas critiqued, challenged and undermined by the emergence of poststructural ways ofthinking. Particular attention is paid to the fields of politics, psychoanalysis, philosophy, and the wider humanities. The wide-reaching and intersecting political consequences ofthese interventions are then analysed with particular emphasis on three key areas: Frenchfeminist thought, postcolonial theory, and democratic theory. It concludes by returning tothe question 'what is critique?' to analyse the ways in which contemporary critical theoryhas both appropriated and attempted to go beyond, poststructuralism.
