1. INTRODUCTION The Hazardous Substances Manual is a compilation of Health, Safety and Environment Data

Sheet (also commonly known as MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet) for various chemicals produced or procured and used by ADGAS. It is ADGAS policy to provide adequate information to its employees about all hazardous substances present on its premises and utilize this information to reduce the risk of any adverse effect due to their exposure to its employees. This manual is intended to provide sufficient information to site personnel engaged in handling and using these chemicals to enable them to work safely and avoid accidents.

The format for providing the product's health and safety information consists of the following

sections: Section 1. Product Identification Section 2. Hazardous Components Section 3. Physical Properties Section 4. Reactivity Data Section 5. Fire & Explosion Hazard Data Section 6. Health Hazard Data Section 7. First Aid Measures Section 8. Precaution in Handling and Use Section 9. Storage Section 10. Spills and Disposal Procedures Definitions given in Appendix-1 explain the contents of above sections of the Health and Safety

Data Sheets. The manual does not include Material Safety Data Sheet for all laboratory reagents, calibration

gases, paints, lubricants and greases. The information provided in the data sheets have been compiled mainly from manufacturer's

MSDS and if required, this information has been supplemented from various available publications and computerised data banks.

For inclusion of any substance in this manual, the “New Chemical Request Form” in page 6 may

please be submitted to Head of Health, Safety and Environment which will review it for either approval or rejection.

Request for any change shall be submitted by filling in Revision Request form depicted on Page

5. This manual will be reviewed after two years from the date of issue.

Anaesthesia Loss of feeling or sensation in a part or all of the body. Asphyxia Suffocation, a life threatening condition in which oxygen is

prevented from reaching the tissues by obstruction or damage to any part of the respiratory system.

Asphyxiant A substance which causes asphyxia. BA Butyl Acetate Blister A swelling containing fluid within or just beneath the skin. Carcinogen Any substance that, when exposed to living tissue, may cause

cancer. Chemical Pneumonitis Inflammation of lungs caused due to chemical inhalation (See

Pneumonitis) CNS Central Nervous System - the brain and the spinal cord. CO2 Carbon dioxide. Coma A state of unrousable unconsciousness. Dermatitis An inflammatory condition of the skin. Erythema Flushing of skin. Euphoria A state of optimism, cheerfulness and well being. Evaporation rate As compared to evaporation of Butyl Acetate designated as 1. Gastritis Inflammation of the lining of the stomach. GIT Gastro Intestinal Tract Hg Mercury IARC International Agency for Research on Cancer. Inflammation The reaction of living tissue to injury or infection characterised by

heat, redness, swelling and pain. LEL Lower Explosive Limit: Synonymous with lower flammable limit,

minimum concentration of substance in air below which the propagation of the flame does not occur.

Lesion A zone of tissue with impaired function. mg/m3 Milligrams of a substance per cubic meter of air. Mucous membrane The moist membrane lining many tubular structure and cavities e.g.

Narcosis A state of diminished consciousness or complete unconsciousness

stomach. Pneumonitis Inflammation of the lung that is confined to the walls of the air sacs

(alveoli) PEL-TWA Permissible exposure limit on a time weighted average basis. PPM Parts per million - Parts of vapour or gas per million parts of air. Pulmonary oedema Excessive accumulation of fluid in lungs. SCBA Self Contained Breathing Apparatus Specific Gravity Relative to water as 1. STEL Short term exposure limit is a level higher than TLV which should

not adversely effect the worker for short periods of exposure (Maximum time limit is 15 minutes up to four times a day with 60 minutes interval between the exposure provided the daily TLV-TWA is not exceeded.)

Stupor A condition of near unconsciousness. TLV Threshold limit value: It represents Time Weighted Averages

(TWA) to which most workers exposed to will not be adversely affected if the average concentration does not exceed the recommended value for an eight hour day.

The word "Ceiling" following a TLV value indicates the concentration that should never be exceeded, even instantaneously.

UEL Upper Explosive Limit: Synonymous with upper flammable limit; maximum concentration of substance in air above which the propagation of the flame does not occur.

Ulceration A break in the skin extending to all its layers or a break in the mucous membrane lining the alimentary tract, that fails to heal and is often accompanied by inflammation.

7. IMPORTANT FIRST AID INFORMATION

Material Safety Data Sheets for each chemical has a section titled "First Aid

Measures". These measures are specific to the individual chemicals. The following general first aid measures are applicable in all cases and shall be followed.

1. Obtain medical attention immediately after administering first aid. 2. If victim is not breathing or the heart has stopped beating, mouth to mouth

resuscitation or CPR shall be immediately initiated by a trained person. 3. Never give fluids to drink to a victim who is unconscious or is rapidly loosing

consciousness. 4. When irrigating the eye ensure that the eye lids are kept forced open. Ensure

that contaminated wash water does not enter the non-affected eye. Irrigation shall be continued by the clock for the recommended duration even if it causes delay in transporting the victim to the hospital.

5. Flushing of skin/body with water shall be continued for the recommended

duration by the clock even if it causes delay in transporting the victim to the hospital.

Appendix 1

EXPLANATION OF THE CONTENTS OF MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS

The definitions given below are intended for explanation of the contents of the Product Health and Safety Data Sheets. Section: 1 Product Identification Common Name: The commonly known name of the chemical as recorded in the stores

catalogue. SAP No: The number assigned for the chemical by Material Operation. Molecular Formula: Molecular formula of the chemical, if applicable. Synonyms: Other names by which the chemical in known / identified. Chemical Composition: Name of ingredients of the substance if mixture. Appearance and odour: Physical appearance (state and colour) and smell. Section: 2 Hazardous Component Lists the principal hazardous component, its percentage in the product if known,

its Threshold Limit Value (TLV) and if applicable Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL).

Section: 3 Physical Properties Specific gravity: The ratio of the density of the substance to that of water. Vapour density: Density of vapour relative to air; ratio of molecular weight of the

substance to molecular weight of air. Melting point: The temperature at which a solid becomes liquid at standard atmospheric

pressure. Boiling Point: The temperature, at standard atmospheric pressure, at which the liquid

starts changing into vapour phase. The lowest value of any component is listed for mixtures.





Solubility: The capability of being dissolved in water or other solvent. Vapour Pressure: The pressure exerted by vapours of a volatile liquid in a confined space

over the liquid at a given temperature. The highest value of any component is listed for mixtures.

PH: Measure of acidity or alkalinity of the substance, if applicable. On a

scale of 1 to 14, 7 is neutral, 1 is highly acidic and 14 is highly alkaline. Evaporation rate: Compared to evaporation rate of Butyl Acetate as 1, unless otherwise

stated. Section: 4 Reactivity Data Stability: Indicates whether the substance is stable or not and conditions under

which it is unstable. Polymerisation: Indicates whether the substance will polymerise or not and conditions

for polymerisation to occur. Conditions to avoid: Condition to avoid hazardous reaction. Incompatibility: Materials to avoid hazardous reaction. Hazardous decomposition / Combustion Products: Known or expected hazardous product(s) resulting from heating,

burning or other reactions. Section: 5 Fire and Explosion Hazard Data Flash point: The minimum temperature at which a liquid gives off vapour in

sufficient concentration to form an ignitable mixture with air near the surface of the liquid. Method of test (e.g. PMCC, COC, Seta) identified.

Autoignition Temperature: The minimum temperature to which a substance in air must be heated in

order to initiate self-sustained combustion (without an external source of ignition.)

Flammability Limit: LEL/UEL LEL: Lower explosive limit is the minimum concentration of the substance in

air below which propagation of the flame does not occur. UEL: Upper explosive limit is the maximum concentration of the substance in

air above which propagation of the flame does not occur.





Fire extinguishing media: Substances recommended for extinguishing the fire. Special fire fighting procedures: Recommendation to protect fire-fighters and fight the fire effectively. Other fire or explosion hazards: Information about unusual fire or explosion hazards not covered

elsewhere. Section: 6 Health Hazard Data Effects of short term overexposure: Potential local or systemic effects due to single or short term

overexposure to the eyes and skin or through inhalation or ingestion. Effects of long term overexposure: Potential local or systemic effects due to repeated or long term

overexposure to the eyes and skin or through inhalation or ingestion. Section: 7 First Aid Measures Procedures to be followed when dealing with accidental overexposure. (Also

refer to Important First Aid Information or page 13) Section: 8 Precautions in Handling and Use General Precautions: Precautions to be taken by personnel during handling and use of the

substance. Ventilation requirement: Recommendation to keep personnel exposure within the limit. Respiratory Protection: Protective Equipment required for normal and emergency handling of

the substance to avoid injuries. Eye / Face Protection: Protective Equipment required for normal and emergency handling of

the substance to avoid injuries. Protective Clothes: Protective Equipment required for normal and emergency handling of

the substance to avoid injuries.





Section: 9 Storage Recommendation for storage to avoid hazardous condition. Section: 10 Spills and Disposal Procedures. Information about precautions to be taken and methods of containment, clean up

and disposal. Disposal shall be done in compliance with ADGAS waste Disposal Manual, ADNOC guidelines and current UAE environmental law.

SECTION 6 HEALTH HAZARD DATA

Effects of short term over exposure:

If inhaled : Non toxic at concentration less than 2.5%. At higher concentration it has anaesthetic

action and at even higher levels is simple asphyxiant.

If ingested : N/A.

In contact with eyes : Gas is not irritating. Carrier acetone is a moderate eye irritant.

In contact with skin : Gas is not irritating. Carrier acetone is a slight skin irritant. Effects of long term over exposure : None reported.

SECTION 7 FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation : Remove victim to fresh air.

Ingestion : N/A.

Eyes : Flush with water for 10 minutes if exposed to liquid from cylinders.

Skin : Flush with water for 5 minutes if exposed to liquid from cylinders.

SECTION 8 PRECAUTIONS IN HANDLING AND USE

General precautions : Avoid all ignition sources and incompatible materials. Standard

precautions for handling and use of gas cylinders apply.

Respiratory protection : Not normally required.

Eye/ face protection: No specific requirement. Protective clothes: Normal work clothes.

Note: Acetylene is normally used for welding and in such case PPE shall be selected based on the

job requirement.

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight and away from ignition sources. Store

cylinders upright secured with chain. Store away from incompatible materials. Standard precautions

for storage of gas cylinders apply (Refer to Sec. 4.8 of ADGAS Safety & Loss Prevention Manual.)

SECTION 10 SPILLS AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

Steps to be taken in event of spills or release : Try to stop the leak or allow gas to dissipate

safely into the atmosphere.
