Welcome to the Autumn / Winter season at Hawkins Theatre - Papakura!

We have been hard at work putting together what will be a very busy season with some great films and shows for you. There are more events on at the Hawkins than ever before which we hope will appeal to all ages and tastes.

We were all shocked and stunned earlier this year at the tragic events that occurred in Christchurch, and to help raise some much needed funds the theatre is proud to be holding two events in aid of the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal. The first will be on Sunday 12th June at 2pm and will feature some of the region’s best musical groups. The second event will be held on the 21st birthday of the theatre’s opening on July 14th at 7.30pm which will feature a wide range of performers who have appeared on the stage over the years. We hope that you can give your support to what will be two amazing events for such a worthy cause.

We are really pleased to see audience numbers are growing steadily as more and more people are becoming aware that the theatre is “upping its game” as one customer politely commented. We do realise though that we cannot rest on our laurels and therefore we will be conducting an audience survey throughout this season to measure our performance as well as find out what improvements, if any, can be made.

As part of our continuing improvement to our service we would like to bring to your attention that the Hawkins Theatre café bar is now open 45 minutes before most performances serving a great selection of soft drinks, beers, a wide range of quality wines from around the world as well as freshly made coffee from our newly installed coffee machine - all at reasonable prices.

So as you browse through the guide remember tickets for all the events that have the sign can be purchased at The Hawkins Theatre Box Office Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, or any other TICKETEK outlet.

We look forward to personally welcoming you at the theatre very soon. The Hawkins Team (Peter, Leilani, Shane & Faye)

MayThe View From Greenhaven

In A Better World

“Sometimes, the life you’re waiting for is waiting for you.”

The town of Greenhaven on the NSW coast might seem like heaven to most people, but not to Dash MacGregor, a grumpy old man who spends most of his time listening to the radio in his darkened shed. While home may not be where Dash’s heart is, he’s equally opposed to the idea of travel. On their wedding anniversary their daughter and son-in-law surprise them with a mystery train tour, but when the destination turns out to be their own town, Dash is forced to confront the disturbing possibility that everything he could ever want is already right there on his doorstep.Starring Chris Haywood, Wendy Hughes and Steve Bisley.

Anton is a doctor who commutes between his home in an idyllic town in Denmark, and his work at an African refugee camp. In these two very different worlds, he and his family are faced with conflicts that lead them to difficult choices between revenge and forgiveness. Anton and his wife Marianne, who have two young sons, are separated and struggling with the possibility of divorce. Their older, ten-year-old son Elias is being bullied at school, until he is defended by Christian, a new boy who has just moved from London with his father, Claus. Christian’s mother recently lost her battle with cancer, and Christian is greatly troubled by her death. Elias and Christian quickly form a strong bond, but when Christian involves Elias in a dangerous act of revenge with potentially tragic consequences, their friendship is tested and lives are put in danger. In Danish with English subtitles.

Oceans

For the past 40 years, Felix Bush has lived as a hermit deep in the Tennessee woods. His clothes tattered, his manner rough and his expressions buried behind a massive white beard, he’s an unnerving figure when he stalks into town with his mule, shotgun in hand. Some say he’s killed men with his bare hands.

One day Bush walks into the local funeral parlour and announces to Frank Quinn, “’Bout time for me to get low. Down to business. I need a funeral.” More importantly, he wants a funeral party, an event that will draw all his friends and enemies to his shack in the woods for a final reckoning—and he wants to throw the party while he’s still alive.

Starring Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Robert Duvall.

Dive into Oceans from Disneynature – The studio that brought you Earth for a spectacular story about remarkable creatures under the sea. Stunning images await as you journey into the depths of a wonderland filled with mystery, beauty and power. It’s an unprecedented look at the lives of these elusive deepwater creatures through their own eyes. Incredible state-of-the-art-underwater filmmaking will take your breath away as you migrate with whales, swim alongside a Great White shark and race with dolphins at play. Filled with adventure, comedy and drama, Oceans is a fascinating and thought-provoking experience you’ll never forget.

Starring Sharks, Polar bears, Crabs, Shrimps, Seals and an array of seafolk.

Papakura’s very own comedy club brings a whole host of laughs with 4 top comedians from the Auckland circuit, and hosted by Billy T James Award winning comedian, Mike Loder.

This months comedians are Chris Brain, Jan Maree, Paul ‘The Soviet’ and Ed Caruthers.

This play centres itself around our search for identity. Author and educator Susan Battye uses key topics such as body image, adoption, animal rights and the 1981 Springbok rugby tour to tell an endearing story of four young women, and their developing relationships with parents and each other.

Written in the early 1950s, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. It recounts the events surrounding the Salem Witch Trials. This was a time when paranoia, hysteria, and deceit gripped the Puritan towns of New England.

By arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia PTY LTD, On behalf of Dramatists Play Service, Inc New York.
