INTRODUCTION:Hawk-Eye is a complex computer system used in cricket, tennis and other sports to visually track the trajectory of the ball and display a record of its most statistically likely path as a moving image.

Hawk Eye as the most innovative technology provider in sports broadcasting and it can track any type of bounce, spin, swing and seam movement of the ball..

HISTORY:This technology was first used in the year 2001 by the engineers of Roke Manor Research Limited Of Romsey .

The patents were submitted but withdrawnby Paul Hawkins and David Sherry.

Later the technology was spun off into a separate company, Hawk-Eye Innovations Ltd.

Principle: The principle of the Hawk Eye Technology is Principle of Triangulation.

Triangulation: It is the process of determining the location of the object by measuring angles to it from the known points at either ends of the base indexed line.

Working:Hawk-Eye incorporates image analysis and radar technology.

The system uses the visual images and timing data provided by the high speed Cameras that are installed around the area of play.

The six fixed monochrome cameras are of 120 MHz frame rate.

These will be updated 100 times a minute.

Page 8: Hawk Eye Technology

The process involves three steps:

1. In each frame sent from each camera, the system identifies the group of pixels which corresponds to the image of the ball.

2. It then calculates for each frame the 3D position of the ball by comparing its position on at least two of the physically separate cameras at the same instant in time.

3. A succession of frames builds up a record of the path along which the ball has travelled It also "predicts" the future flight path of the ball.

APPLICATIONS:

Page 10: Hawk Eye Technology

Wagon Wheels:Charts prepared for showing to which part of the field each scoring shot by a batsman was made . It also makes us know the areas where the batsmen is strong.

De-Spin: De-Spin Graphics demonstrate how far a delivery has deviated after pitching.

Page 11: Hawk Eye Technology

Beehives:Beehives show where the ball has passed the batsman . As with the Pitch Map, the colored balls correspond to the number of runs that the batsman has achieved from that delivery.

Pitch Maps:

Pitch Maps can show the location where the ball has been pitched. Pitch Maps display comparative in a split screen format.

LBW: This technology has made easy for the umpires to give the decisions very accurately

IN and Outs:This technology has its applications in tennis. This will make us know where the ball has been pitched whether out or in.

Future Developments:

1. Hawk-Eye is already working on implementing a systemfor basketball.

2. The Football Association has declared the system as "ready for inspection by FIFA", after tests suggested that the results of a goal-line incident could be relayed to the match referee within half-a-second (IFAB, the governing body for the Laws of the game, insists on goals being signaled immediately e.g. within five seconds).

Conclusion:

We can say that Hawk Eye is a great Innovation. The tracking system and the video replay system has made this technology unique. This technology has met the high reality and accuracy features.

It promises to be a boon for the world of sports and now it is up to the different councils to decide whether to use this technology or not…….
