INTRODUCTION

Hawk-Eye is a complex computer system used officially in numerous sports such as cricket, tennis,  football, badminton,  football

and volleyball, to visually track the trajectory of the ball and display a record of its statistically most likely path as a moving image.

HISTORY

It was developed by engineers at Roke Manor Research Limited in 2001; the patent being held by Paul Hawkins and David Sherry.

Later, the technology was spun off into a separate company, Hawk-Eye Innovations Ltd., as a joint venture with television production company Sunset + Vine.

It first hit our screens in 2001 and has been helping to unravel the mysteries of the LBW decision ever since.

How Hawk Eye Works

It is a vision processing system that uses the images from five to six cameras placed around and high above the court to triangulate the ball's flight and build up a 3D (picture) of its position through the rally.

The cameras record the action at 60 frames a second, about double the speed of standard commercial TV.

As a ball is bowled each camera recognizes the ball in the image. A 3D trajectory of the ball is created from the image data using a process called Kalman Filtering. From this 3D trajectory, you can determine the speed, angle and deviation of the ball's flight.

It is "four-dimensional" technology, adding time to the triangulation that places the ball in space.

It can measure the skid and the distortion of the ball

Principle of Hawk-Eye

A Hawk-Eye system is based on the principle of ”Triangulation”.

FEATURES OF HAWK EYE TECHNOLOGY

Hawk eye system consists of two significant parts

a. Tracking systemb. Video replay system

Page 12: Hawk eye ppt

Tracking system

It consists of high speed vision processing cameras to track the ball from the bowlers hand to the batsman

The system will automatically calculate the following information

1. Speed of the ball leaving the bowler’s hand.2. Reaction time for the batsman.3. The swing of the ball from the bowler’s

hand to where the ball pitched.4. Where the ball pitched.

Page 13: Hawk eye ppt

5. Where the ball was bowled from.6. How much the ball bounced.7. How much the ball deviated

sideways of the wicket.

Page 14: Hawk eye ppt

Video Replay System Though the tracking data provides the

coaches and players the info how they have performed ,the hawk eye system can incorporate more video replay camera for better analysis from diff cam angles, which can be controls remotely.

Video is captured and stored digitally on hard disk and played as and when required.

APPLICATIONS

Its applications are mainly in sports. Cricket Tennis Snookers and In some games

Used in strengthening military power.Used in automobile industry.

Hawk-Eye in Cricket  It is based on the principles of

triangulation using the visual images and timing data provided by high-speed video cameras located at

different locations and angles around the area of play.

It’s applications in cricket

LBW decisions Wagon Wheel Pitch Maps De-Spin

Page 18: Hawk eye ppt

LBW

One very common use of Hawk-Eye are the LBW decisions, where the viewers can see the virtual path of the ball after it’s being pitched and in conclusion get an idea of whether the batsman should actually have been adjudged LBW or not.

WAGON WHEEL

The Wagon Wheel gives you an idea of the different areas where the batsman has been targeting to score singles, doubles,

boundaries or sixes.

Page 21: Hawk eye ppt

Pitch Maps highlight a bowler’s consistency or

expensiveness, line and length.

De-SPIN

It is used to check the angle of turn or deviation of a ball after it has pitched
