Experiences 2

1. Student ability: Low Intermediate ~ Advanced 2. Approximate length of lesson: 40+ 3. Number of students necessary: 2+ 4. Preferred age/maturity: HS, College, Adult 5. Type of lesson: Pair Work Activity

* * * * *

Language Target: Working with thePassive Voice in Present Perfectquestions (Have you ever had / been ...by someone?) with follow up Simple Pasttense answers, talking about experiences, note taking and reporting.

Setting Up: Prepare the class byencouraging students to ask you (theteacher) a Have you ever...? question. Ifthey can’t think of any, write one of thefollowing questions (or one of your own)on the board (be sure that you have donethis!):

Have you ever had your suitcase searched?

Have you ever been given a lot of money?

Have you ever had your bicycle stolen?

Have you ever been falsely accused?Etc.

Help students formulate follow upquestions through demonstration. *For a

partial list of typical follow up questions, see the note at the end of theseinstructions.

Getting Started: Pair students; give oneWorksheet A and the other Worksheet B.

Student A asks one of the questionsfrom the Worksheet. Student B respondswith either Yes, I have or No, I haven’t.If the response is Yes , Student Acontinues asking follow up questions tolearn more about Student B’s experience.Student A writes notes in the box (orwrites complete sentences on a separatesheet of paper).

If Student B replied with No, thenStudent A asks another question from theworksheet OR asks an original Have youever...? question. Remind students thatthe more interesting the question, themore interesting the answer.

Note: Students shouldn’t rush throughthese questions; encourage them to get asmany details as possible about eachexperience.

Alternating between interviewer andinterviewee, students work their waythrough the six questions on theworksheets.

Variation 1: With lower-ability students, don’t hand out the worksheets at first.Ask the class as a whole one of the Haveyou ever…? questions and focus in onthose who said Yes by asking a lot offollow up questions. (The teacher canhelp the students with the wording of thequestions.)

Variation 2: With higher-ability students, tell them to target one (or more) of thequestions and to interview their partner atlength then convert the interview into areport which could be told to a differentstudent.

Variation 3: When finished with theworksheets (or on another day), group allof the students who responded with Yesfor each question. Then, in groups, students discuss their commonexperiences.

Variation 4: This is a great way for studentsto see the more ‘human’ side of theirteacher. Divide the class into two groups, one with Worksheet A and the other withWorksheet B. Students interview theteacher (and keep notes).

They will be immensely interested inyour answers and without knowing it,they’ll be pushing themselves as far asthey can in English just to learn the

details.

Writing Practice: Students pick any one (ormore) of their partner’s experiences andconvert the notes into a story (whichcould be read to the whole class).

*A partial list of typical follow up questions. (Note: Not all of these questions are appropriate forall of the Have you ever…? questions.

When did it happen? How old were you?Where did it happen?Who were you with? What did you do?How much did you find? What did you say?

What time / season / month was it?How long were you there? Why did you do that?Who did you tell? How did you feel? What happened next?
