BaracoaBaracoa is the oldest town in Cuba and marks the site of Columbus’ first landing. Some of the locals are the direct descendants of the native Taino tribe, as it is the only region where they were not completely wiped out by invaders.

BayamoOne of the gateways to the Sierra Maestra Mountains and a major influence in Cuba’s long history, the city is well worth exploring.

CamagueyThe Old Quarter of Camaguey is the largest historic centre in the country. Camaguey is a perfect place to stop for those travelling across Cuba.

Cayo Santa Maria/Cayo Coco/ Cayo GuillermoJardines del Rey is a collection of archipelagoes consisting of around 400 small keys which can be accessed by air or a causeway from the mainland. These three keys offer unspoilt beaches and luxury hotels.

CienfuegosCuba’s so called ‘Pearl of the South’, the city is a mixture of French and Cuban spirit.

GuamaThis is a replica village set in the middle of Treasure Lake that pays homage to the Taino, the last of the native Indians to live in Cuba. Here you can take a boat trip to the village and museum.

GuardalavacaThe beautiful low key resort of Guardalavaca is characterised by undulating hills, peaceful lagoons and quiet, undeveloped white beaches.

HavanaHavana is one of the most fascinating cities in the world and we strongly recommend a few days stay to explore the exquisite Spanish architecture, narrow cobbled streets or the famous mural of Che Guevara.

HolguinHolguin, home of the famous Cuban music, has many historic plazas, being named ‘the City of Parks’.

Pinar del Rio Relatively untouched by tourism, visitors will get a real feel for Cuban provincial life and have the chance to observe cigar making at the local factory.

Santa ClaraThe resting place of Che Guevara, Santa Clara is a typical Cuban town with memories of the Revolution.

Santiago de CubaSantiago is home to many citizens of French and African descent, giving it quite a different feel to Havana, and the city is well known for its love of music and dance, culminating in the annual carnival in July.

Sierra del Rosario The Sierra del Rosario Ecological Reserve is the largest UNESCO protected area in the Caribbean and coordinates extensive conservation and reforestation work.

Sierra Maestra MountainsSierra Maestra is popular with hikers and nature lovers, and there is the opportunity to follow the trail of Castro’s rebel headquarters.

Topes de CollantesEscambray National Park rises up to a height of some 1140 metres above sea level and forms an area of outstanding beauty with magnificent views of Trinidad and the Ancon Peninsula beyond.

TrinidadA must! Trinidad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site boasting many stunning examples of preserved colonial architecture.

VaraderoVaradero is an excellent beach destination that can cater for both the most relaxed and the more energetic visitor.

Vinales ValleyVinales Valley possesses Cuba’s best tobacco growing region and it is also home to rare endemic species of flora and fauna.

Half-Day and Full-DayHavana City ToursTaking in the essential sights of Old Havana, our half-day city tours capture the colonial spirit of Cuba’s remarkable capital city. Dating back to the 16th century, Old Havana is steeped in history and flanked by old colonial buildings. Our walking tours will take you to the impressive Museum of the Revolution housed in the former Presidential Palace; where you can learn more about Cuba’s revolutionary history leading up to the present day. Continue past the impressive Capitolio building and through the fascinating narrow cobblestone streets in the heart of the old city, making many stops to admire the sights. The tour includes a cigarette rolling demonstration by a specialist and a visit to the Plaza de Armas and Plaza de la Catedral, both of which preserve a charming colonial ambiance and some of the finest architecture in Cuba.

If you decide to book the full day city tour, lunch will take place at the impressive restaurant El Patio, overlooking Plaza de la Catedral, followed by a visit to the Havana Club Rum Museum. The tour will finish with a ride in an Old American car that will take you for a unique panoramic drive along the Malecon and Modern Havana, including the Che Guevara Mural and a short stop at Jose Marti Memorial.

Full-Day Tour of Vinaleswith Visit to Las TerrazasOur tour of the picturesque Vinales Valley offers a unique look at Cuba’s main tobacco growing region. Departing early from Havana, you will travel through Pinar del Rio province, an area characterised by rolling tropical countryside, small fertile valleys and dramatic limestone flat-topped mountains, known as ‘mogotes’. After a late morning arrival at Vinales Valley there will be a subterranean boat ride through El Indio limestone cave. After lunch in a countryside restaurant, you will continue to the breathtaking viewpoint of Los Jazmines before returning to Havana with a stop en route at the Sierra del Rosario Ecological Reserve and the chance to swim in the San Juan River followed by a traditional dinner at the house of a local farmer.

3 Day Mini -Tour The tour, which starts and ends in Havana, consists of 3 main regions in Cuba: Santa Clara, Trinidad and Cienfuegos which are rich in history, provide breathtaking sceneries, wonderful local people, customs and delightful places to visit.

The tour runs for 2 nights/3 days, giving you the opportunity to explore Cuba in a nutshell; visit the final resting place of Che Guevara and appreciate the superbly preserved architecture of Trinidad and Cienfuegos.

Tropicana The Tropicana Cabaret is Cuba’s oldest and most famous Cabaret located in Havana. Known as the ‘Paradise under the Stars’, it opened in 1931 and has been pleasing crowds ever since. Surrounded by lush vegetation, you can enjoy a glittering spectacle featuring over 200 singers, dancers, musicians and vocalists.

The Tropicana show can be booked with or without dinner, and can also be arranged with transfers if staying at a hotel in Havana.

Tropicana shows start at approximately 21:00, but if you choose the option with dinner included, then you will need to arrive earlier.

Dolphin Trip from VaraderoCrucero del Sol is one of the most popular excursions in Varadero as it includes a show with dolphins, snorkelling and swimming offshore in crystal clear water and a delicious seafood lunch in Cayo Blanco, a small deserted key. The open bar on board the vessel and extended stay in Cayo Blanco mean you only need to bring your sun protection cream with you.

Cannon CeremonyThis excursion includes dinner in one of Havana’s most respected restaurants, followed by the cannon ceremony at 21:00, one of the best tourist spectacles in the city. The ceremony dates back to the 18th century when the firing of cannons signified that all the city gates were closing.

Today young militia men, dressed in 18th century military uniforms, perform the ceremony with great dignity and pride, loading and firing the cannon with gunpowder over Havana Bay.

HemingwayTransfer in an old classic car or taxi to the Ernest Hemingway Museum (Finca Vigia), where you can appreciate the personal items that belonged to the famous writer. You will then transfer to Cojimar, a fishing village which was used as inspiration for the novel ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. Lunch will be provided in a local seafood restaurant. Afterwards the tour will continue to Bodeguita del Medio, Hemingway’s favourite bar, to drink Mojito, to the Floridita restaurant, where the writer created the famous drink Daiquiri, concluding with a stop at Hotel Ambos Mundos, where you can see the room that the author used during his stays in Cuba and where he wrote part of his novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’.

SpecialistTrekkingThe best regions for hiking are Vinales, Sierra del Rosario, Topes de Collantes and the Sierra Maestra Mountains. The Escambray Mountains, known as Topes de Collantes, are an area of outstanding beauty with a host of protected tree species and abundant bird life. These can be viewed along the many hiking trails available, as can the spectacular waterfall Salto de Caburni, 75 metres high. The Moka Hotel in the Sierra del Rosario offers a wide range of pre-bookable trekking options including some lasting a number of days with the chance to camp under the stars. The Zapata National Park in Matanzas region also provides excellent opportunities for nature lovers, but walkers must be accompanied by a guide and obtain an official entrance permit, available from the National Parks Office in Playa Larga. Guided excursions are the best method of exploring these areas.

DivingCuba is one of the Caribbean’s foremost diving sites with numerous shipwrecks and an abundance of coral reefs for both wall and platform dives. The most recognised sites are Cayo Largo, Jardines del Rey archipelago and Maria la Gorda on the western tip of Cuba. Many all-inclusive hotels offer diving lessons for beginners, but for more advanced dives proof of qualifications and fully comprehensive travel insurance are required.

GolfGolf is still a developing activity in Cuba and many courses are currently being planned throughout the island. For the moment, however, there is one 18 hole course recognised by the PGA: the Varadero links course affording wonderful views along the peninsula. Green fees are very reasonable compared to European rates and all equipment can be hired for a modest fee paid locally. Havanatour can pre-book your tee-off time to ensure those popular early morning and twilight rounds.

BirdwatchingCuba has over 380 species of birds, more than 80% of which can be viewed in the Zapata National Park, 4 hours drive south east of Havana. Cayo Coco is a favourite stopover for migratory birds such as spoonbills and flamingos which can be seen in their thousands feeding in the mudflats and lagoons. The Bee Hummingbird, the smallest hummingbird in the world, is endemic to Cuba. The mountains of Eastern Cuba also contain several biosphere reserves designed to protect endangered bird life.

Fishing There are several marinas around the resort areas and a variety of vessels can be hired for excursions and fishing trips. Deep sea fishing in Cuba is particularly good off the north-western coast, where species caught may include swordfish, tuna and marlin.

CruiseEmbark on a beautiful yacht to experience 7 nights and 8 days of pure luxury, history and the most enchanting sceneries of the south east of Cuba. The cruise starts and ends in Cienfuegos. We at Havanatour are able to arrange a package tour that includes the cruise with a few nights' accommodation in Havana (with a City Tour) and a night in Cienfuegos with free time to explore the city.

Special Interest TravelHavanatour are able to provide suggestions and itineraries for a wide range of special interest holidays, for example fully escorted cycling tours, salsa dancing, as well as arranging Spanish lessons for beginners and intermediaries.

A unique destination and one of the most famous cities in the world, Havana is a living time capsule of days gone by, from its Spanish colonial history to the enduring legacy of the Revolution. Havana is characterised by icons such as the 1950s American car, Havana rum, Cuban cigars and the famous mural of Che Guevara which overlooks Revolution Square. Havana can be divided into four main areas: the Old Quarter, which as the name suggests is the historic heart of the city and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Central Havana contains the famous Paseo del Prado, Capitolio building and many outstanding museums. Vedado is the modern political and cultural centre including Revolution Square. Finally, Miramar, to the west, is Havana’s most elegant quarter whose main tree-lined avenue, Quinta Avenida, is flanked by magnificent villas; many now home to foreign embassies.

Interesting Places

Plaza de Armas

This historic square, where the Spaniards were reputed to have started their first settlement in 1519, was home to the city’s most prominent personalities as well as colonial government offices. Attractions include the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, a stunning baroque building where the Spaniards surrendered to the US in 1898 which now houses the History Museum and the monument to Columbus, the oldest statue in Cuba dating back to 1892 and modelled on a portrait still on display in the National Museum in Madrid. Not forgetting the Templete which is a neoclassical building marking the spot where the first mass was supposedly held after the founding of the city, the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Havana’s oldest military fortress and one of the first built in the New World, and the Palacio del Segundo Cabo, a beautifully preserved example of the city’s 17th century architecture which once housed the Senate and Supreme Court.

Parque Central Square

This square is in the heart of the city and is a fascinating place to sit and watch the world go by. It is flanked by the Paseo del Prado, the city’s most elegant promenade characterised by its imposing bronze lions and by the Capitolio building with its breathtaking, beautiful vaulted ceilings and majestic halls. You will also find the Gran Teatro which was constructed in 1915. This glorious building, which towers next to the Inglaterra hotel, was erected in Renaissance/Rococo style and was built using mortar which, at that time, was a novel technique which allowed for a much greater detail of craftmanship.

Museum of the Revolution

This museum is housed in the former Presidential Palace and commemorates Cuba’s historic heritage. It includes the Granma Memorial, the boat used by Castro and his followers in 1956 to travel from Mexico to Cuba to begin the struggle against the then dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Jardines del Rey is a collection of archipelagos consisting of around 400 small keys, the most important ones being Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo.

These stunning keys, with their powder white sands and crystal waters, are perfect for getting away from it all. They are also home to a protected biosphere reserve and a variety of different bird species.

Cayo Santa MariaCayo Santa Maria is located on the western end of the Archipiélago de Sabana Camaguey providing 14 km of white sandy beaches. Between 1989 and 1996, a 48 km causeway called ‘El Pedraplen’ was constructed across the Bahia Buena Vista from the port of Caibarien. Paving was completed in 1999, just when Las Brujas Airport was built on Cayo Las Brujas.

Cayo CocoCayo Coco is a coral key of 230 sq km that lies to the north of Cuba’s mainland. It is blessed by nearly 22 km of beautiful, unspoilt sandy white beaches which are awash with crystal clear waters. The island boasts a rich natural habitat and provides a wildlife refuge for many animals including deer and wild pigs. It is also home to Cuba’s largest colony of flamingos, which can be seen flying overhead at sunrise and sunset during June and July. There are hundreds of other bird species here including herons, humming birds, ibis, egrets and not forgetting the huge numbers of migratory birds.

Cayo GuillermoCayo Guillermo is a small, quiet island which covers an area of 20 sq km and is particularly good for deep sea fishing. It is the smaller key neighbour of Cayo Coco, with the two islands connected by a bridge.

This key was known as one of Ernest Hemingway’s favourite fishing haunts along with El Pilar beach (notable for its dunes) which was named after Ernest Hemingway’s yacht.

How to get thereThere are daily domestic flights between Havana and Cayo Coco/Cayo Santa Maria (Cayo Las Brujas) or we can arrange a road transfer which takes you across a 16 km specially constructed causeway. To reach Cayo Guillermo, you need to fly to Cayo Coco.

Villa Santo Domingo HH

El CastilloHHH

A simple mountain lodge 750 metres above sea level on the banks of the River Yara, Villa Santo Domingo consists of 20 cabanas modestly furnished but offering a peaceful base from which to explore the dramatic surrounding scenery.

This hotel is situated in the centre of the town. Built in the 1940s, it is preferred by many for its excellent combination of pleasant rooms and fine gastronomic services.

Baracoa, the oldest town in Cuba, was the capital for just a brief four years before Diego de Velasquez moved his power base to Santiago, since which time the community has lived in peaceful isolation due to its remote position on the eastern tip of Cuba. Indeed, it was not until after the Revolution that a spectacular mountain road was built (La Farola) linking the town to Santiago and the rest of Cuba.

The town of Bayamo, founded in 1513 by Captain Diego Velazquez, was the cradle of Cuba’s National Anthem and also the birth place of Cuban patriot, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes.

Bayamo has been constructed in a colonial style, featuring public squares with beautiful majestic mansions and is home to a magnificent cathedral.

This majestic mountain range runs along the south coast of the island and measures some 50 km at its widest, north to south. It contains a diverse range of flora and fauna, much of it endemic to the area, nestling under the dense undergrowth and cloud forest on the higher peaks. Whilst there are few mammals, the mountains teem with reptiles, amphibians and large numbers of tropical birds.

This Spanish style hotel is built on the foundations of an old fortress and its position some 40 metres above the town offers magnificent views of the area. The location, colonial furnishings and internal architecture combined make this a very popular property for visitors.

Hotel America is located very close to Leoncio Vidal Central Park and Santa Clara´s Civic Square, the main socio-cultural and economic centre of the town, a place where you can enjoy museums, nightclubs, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Situated on the outskirts of the city in very picturesque grounds and close to the Che Guevara memorial and museum, this hotel is built in the style of a native Taino village with rooms charmingly housed in thatched cabanas shaded by eucalyptus and palm trees.

Centrally located in Jose Marti Square, this hotel has been beautifully renovated in its original colonial style whilst offering a wide range of modern comforts. It is an elegant and convenient choice whilst visiting Cienfuegos.

This comfortable hotel is situated in the elegant quarter of Punta Gorda and its upper floor rooms offer wonderful views over the bay and the turrets of Palacio del Valle, a stunning Moorish-style palace built at the beginning of the last century.

The narrow, somewhat haphazard streets – said by some to be deliberately designed that way in order to confuse pirates, who were regular visitors – give the city a real Spanish flavour and they are best explored on foot in order to fully appreciate the beautifully restored buildings and plazas. The oldest part of the city is the largest historic centre in the country and has been declared a national monument.

Hotel Playa GironHH

Hotel Playa Larga HH

Hotel Playa Giron is located on the southern coast of Matanzas province, in the well known Península de Zapata area. It is very close to two beaches, one of which is excellent for diving due to its translucent waters and submarine areas covered with corals, gorgonias and sponges. The other beach has a rural, calm atmosphere and is perfect for meditation. This hotel is the ideal location for holidaymakers who love nature and water sports.

This cabana style hotel is located between the beach and the forest and is an ideal spot for those wishing to take advantage of the warm Caribbean waters and the delights of the local Zapata region, Cuba’s largest nature reserve. It is also close to the museum commemorating the battle of the Bay of Pigs which took place in 1961.

Playa Giron is a small town of only a few hundred inhabitants, but its beach was the scene of an invasion attempt by US-backed counter-revolutionaries in April 1961, which was successfully repelled by the Cubans. There is an excellent museum on site documenting the invasion with photographs, military equipment and a 10 minute documentary filmed during the battle.

One of the main beaches of Península de Zapata is Playa Larga. A preserved natural area of swamps, mangroves, beaches and abundant wildlife make this a perfect place to visit for the nature lover.

As well as birdwatchers, the area also attracts substantial numbers of fishermen due to the abundant stocks in the lake of Las Salinas, which is particularly well known for its bonefish.
