The basis of this genealogical History is that of Dr. Watson Harwood, later improved with data from a rough drafted rewrite by Walter F. Harwood of Houston TX. The draft was made available in correspondence to Edward D. Harwood, Sr. via W. F. Harwood’s letter of 2/14/1990. Some additional corrections and updates have been made by Edward D, Harwood, Jr. based on newspaper clippings, interviews and correspondence. Correspondence credits are:

Progenitor

1. * JOHN HARWOOD was a citizen of London, England, and belonged to a family that it would appear had long been settled in London. It is thought that he never came to America, or if he came, returned later to England and died in London. There was a John Harwood who with DOROTHY, his wife, was a resident of London at that time. His will was dated Feb. 16, 1653, and proved Feb. 8, 1654, showing that he died between the two dates. In the will he mentions only two sons, Nathaniel and John, and a daughter Anne. His wife DOROTHY proved the will and had under it a tenement in Cranley, Surrey. We have not, of course, positive proof that John Harwood, who was father to the brothers and sister who settled in New England, was the same as the one who died in 1654, but it seems very probable that he was the same, as the time and place and names all favor such a conclusion.

Children of JOHN HARWOOD, No.1. All born probably in London.

2. * JOHN came from England to Boston, Mass., in 1645. He was made freeman in 1649. He was admitted to the Church in Boston, Dec. 25, 1647. He married ELIZABETH USHER, daughter of Hezekiah and Mary Usher, of Boston, and they made their residence in Boston, where he was a merchant. He sold his property in Boston in 1657, and returned to England, where he continued the mercantile business in London. He was living in Bethnal Green, a suburb of London, in 1665. He still owned land in Dunstable, New England, which was sold by his heirs long after his decease. He died about 1685, as is shown by his will made Nov. 13, 1684, and proved June 22, 1685. His wife did not long survive him, as her will was proved in 1687.

3. * THOMAS, born in 1623. He came to New England. Married, RACHEL WOODWARD, widow of Robert Woodward, and daughter of John Smith, July 7, 1654. They resided in Boston, where he died Jan. 5, 1706.

4. * HANNAH came to New England. She married, Oct. 10, 1657, THOMAS WHEELER, and they resided in Concord, Mass. She was living in Concord, a widow, in 1697.

5. * NATHANIEL, born in 1626. He came to New England and married ELIZABETH. They resided in Boston, Mass. until after 1665, when they removed to Concord, Mass. He was by occupation a cordwainer. He was made freeman, March 21, 1690. He died in Concord, Feb. 7, 1716, his wife April 25, 1715.

6. * ROBERT came to New England and resided in Boston. He was by occupation a "biscake baker." He married about 1671, JOANNA. He died about 1678, his wife in 1696.

7. ELIZABETH, born at Boston, Mass., Mar. 13, 1650. Married Mr. SEDGWICK. She was living in New England, Nov. 13, 1684, when her father's will was made. The will also mentions her son Samuel Sedgwick.

8. HEZEKIAH, born in Boston, Mass., April 27, 1653. Died young.

9. HANNAH, born at Boston, Mass., March 6, 1655. Married RALPH MANWARING, of London. She is mentioned in her father's will in 1684, also in her brother Jacob's will in 1701.

10. ANNA, born at Boston, Mass., Aug. 26, 1657.

11. * JOHN, born in London. He was in New England, (Boston), in 1684, but back in London, in Oct, 1685, and a merchant in that city in 1688, residing in Montague St., Parish of St. Dunstan, Stepney. He was mentioned in his father's will, also in the will of his brother Jacob. He died before 1724, at which time his widow, ELIZABETH, was living in the parish of St. Buttolph, without Bishops Gate Street.

12. JACOB, born in London. He was an apprentice to his mother in 1684 and the executor of her will in 1687. He was a merchant in London. He died about 1701, as his will was proved that year.

13. JOSEPH, born in London, in 1667. He came to America, and was a merchant in New York City, in 1693. He was mentioned in the will of his brother Jacob, in 1701.

14. RACHEL, born June 20, 1655, at Boston, Mass. Died Sept. 27, 1656.

15. JEREMIAH, born June 4, 1656, at Boston, Mass. He probably died before 1705, as he is not mentioned in his father's will made that year.

16. ANN, born Aug. 26, 1657, at Boston, Mass. and died young.

17. WILLIAM, born 1659, at Boston, Mass. Died the same year.

18. RACHEL, born Feb. 28, 1661, at Boston, Mass. Died before 1705.

19. * BENJAMIN, born Feb 4, 1663, at Boston, Mass. Married MEHITABLE. He died, it is believed, before 1690.

20. HANNAH, born Oct. 25, 1658, at Concord, Mass. Died Aug. 12, 1659, at Concord.

21. THOMAS, born Jan. 1, 1659/60, at Concord, Mass. Married SARAH DAVIS.

22. *JOHN, born Sept. 2, 1661, at Concord, Mass. Married ELIZABETH WELLS, April 25, 1684. Died Nov. 21, 1721, at Marlboro, Mass. ELIZABETH married second, Mar. 9, 1725, DANIEL RICE, at Marlboro.

23. * WILLIAM, born at Boston, Mass., Mar. 28, 1665. Married at Concord, Mass., May 11, 1692, ESTHER PERRY, born Aug. 11, 1674, daughter of Obadiah and Esther Perry. They settled in that part of Dunstable, which is now Nashua, N.H., about 1700. He was a worthy man and a valued citizen, and was elected to office on many occasions. He died Sept. 17, 1739/40, and his will was probated Oct. 9, 1739/40. His wife Oct. 8, 1747.

24. * NATHANIEL, born Oct. 1, 1669, at Concord, Mass. Married MARY BARRON, daughter of Moses Barron, and they made their residence in Chelmsford, Mass. In 1732, Nathaniel and Mary made over their landed property to their son Jonathan on these conditions:

"They were to have the best room in the now dwelling house, with the best chamber, and a good, convenient cellar, without any let, stint, or hindrance. And deed not to take place 'till their, the said Nathaniel and Mary Harwood's decease." Nathaniel made a will June 7, 1744, in which he reaffirmed the bargain with his son Jonathan, and gives his money to his four daughters and a granddaughter. Nathaniel died Oct. 28, 1751, his wife in Oct., 1758.

25. * PETER, born Jan. 12, 1671, at Concord, Mass. Married MARY FOX, Nov. 7, 1700. He was a good citizen and substantial farmer of Concord. He removed with his wife to Littleton, Mass., in 1737, and settled on land which has been in the possession of a line of his descendants ever since. Herbert J. Harwood's sons, in the seventh generation, were occupying the place in 1910. Two houses were built since the time of Peter: one in 1753 and destroyed by fire in 1874; a beautiful residence was built by Col. Joseph A. Harwood. Peter died at Littleton, Mass., May 10, 1740, his wife May 17, 1742.

29. WILLIAM was living in 1724, at Noryon Tolgate, in Bishops Gate Street, London, and was "the only heir of John Harwood, deceased." He joined his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Harwood, in selling their land in Dunstable, New England.

39. ELIZABETH, born July 8, 1694, at Concord, Mass. We learn from the Concord, Mass.,

records that she married JOHN BARKER, Nov. 25, 1708. He must have died before 1739, and she married again, as in her father's will she is called Elizabeth French.

40. ESTHER, born Jan 10, 1696, at Concord, Mass. Married, Aug. 26, 1724, JOSEPH BARKER, of Marlboro, Mass. She, too, must have lost her first husband, as in her father's will she is named Esther Morse.

41. JOHN, born May 28, 1699, at Concord, Mass. He served as a soldier in Lovewell's third expedition against the Indians, and was killed at Pigwacket (in Fryeburg, Me.), in "Lovewell's Fight," May 8, 1725. An old ballad commemorates this fight, and gives to Ensign John Harwood "a wife and twin babes," but no mention is made of wife or children in the settlement of his estate by his father not long after his death.

42. THOMAS, born June 26, 1706, at Dunstable, Mass. Married ABIGAIL. He was a prominent citizen of Dunstable. He made a will May 23, 1787, and is supposed to have died that same year. No mention is made of children in the will.

43. SARAH, born June 26, 1706, at Dunstable, Mass. Married Deacon WILLIAM CUMMINGS. They had two sons and two daughters. Deacon Cummings was a soldier under Lovewell. He died at Hudson, N.H., Aug. 29, 1757.

44. MARY, born Mar. 25, 1709, at Dunstable, Mass. Married THOMAS POLLARD, of Dunstable.

45. ABIGAIL, born Apr. 9, 1710, at Dunstable, Mass. Married JACOB HILDREDTH, Oct. 18, 1730.

Mr. Harwood married, second, MARY PARKER, in Mar., 1738. His will dated Nov. 10, 1777, was proved Apr. 20, 1784. Mrs. Harwood died Dec. 27, 1754.

55. SUSANNA, born Apr. 14, 1713 at Chelmsford, Mass. Married JOHN ROBBINS, May 1, 1736. They had several children.

56. * NATHANIEL, born Aug. 24, 1701, at Concord, Mass. Married HANNAH TAYLOR, daughter of James Taylor, of Marlboro, Mass. They settled in Lunenburg, Mass., thence removed to Leicester, Mass., about 1748. He served as a soldier in the old French and Indian war, and afterwards commanded the Militia Company of his town. He was a good citizen and man of much influence.

57. * JOHN, born Apr. 28, 1703, at Concord, Mass. Married HANNAH ALDRICH, of Mendon, Mass., Feb. 9, 1726. She was born, June 2, 1704. They settled in Uxbridge, Mass. He was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Worcester County, in 1732. He had the title of Colonel. He made his will Oct. 20, 1787, and died Sept. 18, 1788. Hannah died Mar. 18, 1794.

58. MARY, born Aug. 11, 1705 at Concord, Mass. Married BENJAMIN FLETCHER.

59. *JOSEPH, born Feb. 26, 1708, at Concord, Mass. Married at Concord, Apr. 14, 1731, LYDIA BROOKS, who died in Nov., 1732. He married, second, MARY. She was born in 1708, and died June 3, 1787. Joseph moved to Littleton, Mass., with his father, about 1737. He and his wife were admitted to the Littleton Church, July 9, 1737, on dismissal from the Church in Concord. Joseph was Selectman, Town Clerk and Highway Surveyor in Littleton for many years, and was Representative to the Legislature in 1761, 1766, and 1769. He had the title of Captain. He died in Littleton, June 25, 1792.

60. * HANNAH, born Jan. 30, 1710 at Concord, Mass. Married JOSEPH WOOLLEY, at Concord, Mar. 28, 1754.

61. * BENJAMIN, born Apr. 30, 1713, at Concord, Mass. Married BRIDGET BROWN, daughter of Eleazer Brown, of Concord in May, 1733. She was born Apr. 20, 1715. They removed to Hardwick, Mass., thence to Amherst, Mass., where he died Aug. 19, 1758. His widow removed with her children to Bennington, Vt., in June, 1761 and was in the first company of settlers in Bennington. Mrs. Harwood and the other ladies rode on horseback, brought their effects on horseback, and came by the guidance of marked trees. BRIDGET died Nov. 8, 1762.

62. * EBENEZER, born Feb. 22, 1714 at Concord, Mass. Married DOROTHY HUBBARD, of Concord, in 1736. They resided in Littleton, Mass., and then moved to North Brookfield, Mass., in 1743. He enlisted, Apr. 9, 1745, in Capt. Olmstead's company, under Sir William Pepperell, in the war against the French. The expedition was an effort to drive the French from the Island of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Ebenezer was killed June 17, 1745, at the first capture of the fortress at Louisburg. His widow is said to have walked all the way from Brookfield to Boston to draw the bounty money due him.

116. * NATHAN, born Feb. 22, 1737, at Uxbridge, Mass. Married' HULDA BANNISTER, of Brookfield, Mass., Feb. 16, 1760. He served in the war against the French, in 1756. He also served with distinction in the American Army of the Revolution. Was 1st Lieutenant in the Second Hampshire County Regiment, in 1776. Was Captain in Col. John Dickinson's regiment in July, 1777, and the next month served as Lieutenant in Col. Ezra's May's regiment, which fought in the battle of Bennington. Again, Sept. 20, 1777, he enlisted in Capt. Bannister's company, Col. May's regiment, in which he served as Lieutenant, taking part in the battles of Stillwater and Saratoga, and being present at the surrender of Burgoyne, He was a regular practitioner of medicine in Windsor, Mass. Nathan died Feb. 3, 1790.

124. * JOSEPH, born Feb. 2, 1742, at Littleton, Mass. Married, in 1768, MARY TUTTLE, probably daughter of Samuel and Martha (Shattuch) Tuttle. Mary died, and he married, second, Oct. 21, 1773, THANKFUL STONE, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Prescott) Stone, of Groton, Mass. Thankful was born Oct. 10, 1754, and died July 3, 1839, in Littleton. Joseph was Town Treasurer, Highway Surveyor, and member of the School Committee in Littleton. Like his father, he had the title of Captain. He lived on the old homestead in Littleton, all his life. He died Feb. 6, 1819.

They settled in Amherst, Mass., then removed in 1761, to Bennington, Vt. Margaret died Feb. 16, 1794. Peter married, second, Mrs. MARY DOTY, June 10, 1794. Mary was born in 1737, at Hardwick, Mass., daughter of Jonathan Warner. She died in Bennington, Oct. 27, 1810. He died July 12, 1815. He set out the first apple tree in Bennington, and in 1869, the tree was still alive and bearing fruit.

131. * ELEAZER, born Sept. 28, 1737 at Hardwick, Mass. Married ELIZABETH MONTAGUE, daughter of Samuel Montague, May 19, 1761. They removed the next month to Bennington, Vt., then to Pittsford, Vt., in 1783. Eleazer was a devout Christian, with a good education for his opportunities, gifted in speech and prayer and being very acceptable to the people in conducting religious services, he was unanimously called by the church and society at Pittsford, Vt., to become their minister. After much earnest prayer and consideration, he accepted the invitation, and was duly ordained the first settled minister of the Congregational Church of Pittsford. Here he labored faithfully and had the joy of seeing many persons brought to Christ through his ministry. He died May 19, 1807, his wife May 14, 1824.

132. * BENJAMIN, born April 20, 1739 at Hardwick, Mass. Married CATHARINE CHANCEY. They made their residence in Amherst, Mass. He died in 1760.

133. *ZECHARIAH, born March 11, 1742, at Hardwick, Mass. Married LOVINA RICE, at Hardwick. She was a daughter of Oliver Rice, an ensign in the Ninth Mass. Bay regiment, in the Revolutionary War. Zechariah himself fought in the battle of Bennington, Vt. He had charge of a pest-house at Bennington, where persons suffering from small pox were isolated from the community. He seemed to have a peculiar skill in the management of this dreaded disease. Lovina died Sept 6, 1808, and he married, second, ANTICE ALMA. Zechariah died in Bennington, June 6, 1821.

138. HEPZIBAH, born in Amherst, Mass., Nov. 26, 1756. Married JAMES PHILLIPS, and resided in Pownal, Vt., where Mr. Phillips died. She married, second, JOHN SMEDLEY, in 1786. They lived in Williamstown, Mass., where Mr. Smedley died. Married, third, JAMES DODGE, in 1815.

140. * PETER, born May 10, 1740 (Feb 23 1762 in Sutton – from Hill genealogy), at Littleton, Mass. Married PHEBE PROUTY, of Spencer, Mass., May 26, 1763. She was born Aug. 1, 1744, and died Feb. 13, 1811. He was a farmer, millwright, civil engineer, and contractor. He served seven years in the Revolutionary Army, and was a brave, daring officer. He was court-martialed for disobedience of orders to abandon and destroy a bridge at White Plains, then being held by the American Army, but on trial his action was so far justified that he was retained and promoted. He was officer of the day at the execution of Major Andre. After the war, Major Harwood built on a part of the original homestead the first brick house in the Brookfields. The walls are 18 inches thick, and 100,000 bricks were used in its construction. Later he went to Delaware, where he died, June 14, 1805.

His youth was a continual series of adventures and accidents, but he came through them all not much the worse except a few scars. In the spring of 1781, he entered the American Army of the Revolution, and in a few months was taken prisoner by the British and taken to Ford Chamblee, and soon after to the Cedars in Canada. After awhile he attempted escape, but after a few days was retaken. In Nov., 1782, he was taken with other prisoners to Boston to exchange. As was usual with our hero, where ever he was there was trouble and delay, but he was finally exchanged and reached his home in Windsor, Mass. He had the title of Captain. He died in 1822, his wife in 1844.

245. LUCRETIA, born March 9, 1764, at Bennington, Vt. Married AMOS KELLOGG. They both died at Pittsford, Vt. Mr. Kellogg served in the Revolution in Col. Warner's regiment. He was connected with the army some seven years, and rose to be Brigadier General of the Vermont Militia. He was a Justice of the Peace, and was several times elected to the Vermont Legislature. He and his wife were efficient members of the Congregational Church of Pittsford.

252. * ELEAZER, born May 7, 1780, at Bennington, Vt. Married ABIGAIL PENFIELD, daughter of John Penfield, March 14, 1806. They lived in Hartford, Vt., where for several years he was engaged in the manufacture of woolen cloth. In 1815, he removed to Ticonderoga, N.Y., and in company with his brother-in-law, Isaac Kellogg, built a woolen factory, gristmill and sawmill, and purchased a farm on his own account. Both he and his

wife were devoted Christians -he was a deacon in the Congregational Church. He died Sept. 19, 1825, his wife Sept 17, 1867.

Mr. Harwood removed to Chicago, Ill., and entered the employ of the Sherwood School Furniture Co. On the moving of the plant to Morris, Ill., he settled in that place, remaining there until his death, Dec. 11, 1874. His wife died in Richmond, Ind., April 13, 1886.

He held various offices: was member of the Massachusetts Senate in 1875 and 1876; was on the Staff of Gov. Washburn, and of Acting Governor Talbot and of the Council of Gov. Rice and Gov. Talbot. Was Postmaster of Littleton for about twenty years; was trustee of the New England Agricultural Society, and of the Middlesex County Agricultural Society; also trustee of Westford Academy, and of the Massachusetts Agricultural College. He made his residence on the old Harwood Homestead at Littleton. He was also a manufacturer of leather board and chairs. Joseph married Feb. 11, 1852, LUCY M. HARTWELL, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth B. (Walker) Hartwell, of Littleton. Lucy was born Aug. 28, 1832, and was still living in Littleton in 1910. Joseph died in Littleton, Oct. 15, 1896.

He engaged in teaching in the south for two or three years. He married HESTER A. HITCHCOCK, daughter of Chapman Hitchcock, at Pittsford, Vt., Dec. 21, 1842, and engaged in farming for a few years. He then studied dentistry and began the regular practice of this profession in 1848. Removed his family and practice to Rutland, Vt.

(corner of Washington and Pleasant), in 1851, where he was very successful in his chosen work. His wife died Sept. 14, 1867, and on July 13, 1870, he married EMMA G. PITKIN, daughter of Orin Pitkin, at Montpelier, Vt. She was born Aug. 16, 1841. They continued to reside in Rutland, where he died July 19, 1880. His wife resided in Rutland as late as 1910. Dr. Harwood was a devoted Christian and member of Center Lodge, No. 34, F. and A.M.

475. * NATHAN SYLVESTER, born June 18, 1843, in Michigan. When he was twelve years

of age his father removed to Black Hawk County, Iowa. He received his education in the common schools and in the college at Fayette, Iowa. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in Co. G, 9th Iowa Infantry, and was mustered into service as 3d corporal, Aug, 10, 1861. After his discharge he returned to school, in the fall of 1863. In the spring of 1864, he again enlisted as 1st Lieutenant, and served till late in that year. In Dec., 1864, he went to Hillsdale, Mich., and finished his college course in 1869. That year, he entered the Albany, N.Y., law school, graduating in June, 1870, and was admitted to practice in the courts of New York, Jan. 1, 1871. He entered into partnership with Samuel T. Tuttle, and settled in Lincoln, Neb. In 1875, John H. Ames was added to the firm. Mr. Harwood was Private Secretary to Governor Garber in 1875 and 1876. In 1887, he was elected President of the Lincoln National Bank, and served as such until the consolidation with the First National Bank of Lincoln in 1892, and was then President of the latter. He was delegate at large to the Republican National Convention at Chicago, in 1884, was a member of the committee on Resolutions; was a member of the National Tariff Reform Convention at Chicago, in 1885, and one of its Vice Presidents. He was one of the founders of the Lincoln Public Library, and for fifteen years on the Board of Directors. Mr. Harwood retired from the Presidency of the First National Bank, Sept 1, 1897, and joined his daughter who was a student in Paris, and with her spent three months in England. He was a member of the Grand Army, the Royal Legion, and a Scottish Rite Mason. Mr. Harwood married MARY E. COOK, at Hillsdale, Mich., May 29, 1872. She died at Montague, Mich., Sept 17, 1878. He married, second, CELIA ELIZABETH HARRIS, daughter of George S. and Sarah (Bacon) Harris, at Lincoln, Neb., July 25, 1883. Mr. Harwood died Jan 5, 1900.

They moved to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1864, where Dr. Harwood died June 6, 1878. His wife died at Oshkosh, WI July 23, 1880.

He was educated in the public schools of Littleton; at the Lancaster, Mass., Academy; Phillips Exeter Academy; and at Harvard University until 1877, when he received the degree of A.B. After leaving college he was in the employ of the Montague Paper Company, Turner's Falls, Mass.; of J. A and N. Harwood, and the Harwood Manufacturing Company, both of Boston, Mass.; and of R. W. Reid and the Andrews-Demarest Seating Company, both of New York, for whom he was the Boston representative. On Jan. 1, 1899, he went into business for himself in Boston, as a manufacturer of Assembly chairs; and he was also a director of the National Fiber Board Company. He was Lieut-Col. and Assistant Adjutant-General on the Staff of Gov. John D. Long in 1882, and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1889. He was also trustee of the Bromfield School at Harvard, trustee of the Public Library at Littleton for twenty-one years until 1906. He was a member of the New England Historic-Genealogical Society; of the Essex Institute; the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Harvard; and an original member of the University Club of Boston. While at Harvard he was a member of the Institute of 1770; and the Delta Kappa Epsilon. He was also a Mason. His favorite recreations were farming on the old homestead and local history. He was also much interested in the Harwood genealogy. He went abroad in 1869, and traveled in England and France. He wrote articles on Littleton local history for several works; and was on a committee to publish the vital records of his native town. He married at Lancaster, Mass., Oct. 15, 1879, EMILIE AUGUSTUS GREEN. She was born in Malden, Mass., Nov. 28, 1854, daughter of Ezra and Elmina M. (Richardson) Green. She was graduated from the Framingham, Mass., Normal School in 1873. Mr. Harwood died on Easter Sunday, 1910.

Mr. Harwood was connected with this business until his death. Mr. Harwood was a Republican and served one term as alderman of the First Ward. He was a stockholder and vice-president of the Citizen's Gas Light Company of Bloomington for many years, and was interested in the Third National Bank. Mr. Harwood was an energetic citizen who stood well in the esteem of his neighbors and fellow citizens. He died at Bloomington, 111., Dec. 17, 1891.

Mr. Harwood received his high school education in the Hudson River Institute, at Claverack, N.Y. He then spent two years as a clerk in a dry goods store at Holley, N.Y. In 1874, he moved with his father's family to Ripon, WI., where he worked until Feb., 1876, when he went to Appleton, WI., to take a position with the Appleton Woolen Mills. In 1881, he was elected General Manager of the mills. In 1910, he was elected President and General Manager. The company operated two mills, having purchased the Woolen Mill at Reedsburg, WI., in 1902. The company also owned a controlling interest in the Lake Superior Knitting Works, of which Mr. Harwood was Secretary and Treasurer. He was also a Director of the First National Bank of Appleton. Served six years as Alderman, four of these as President of the Council. For nine years was clerk of the School Board. Mr. Harwood and family were members of the Congregational Church. He served as Deacon for 20 years; and as Superintendent of the Sunday school for 26 years. He took great pleasure in working with the young, and organized a Boys Brigade of nearly 100 members. He was a Director of the Wisconsin State Congregational Association; of the State Sunday School Association; and the State Y. M. C. A. He was the first State President of the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor. Mrs. Harwood also took an interest in her husband's activities.

He studied law under Judge Pierpont Isham, and was admitted to the bar at Janesville, WI in 1856. He moved to Springfield, Mo., in the spring of 1866, and to Upland, Calif., in 1887. While practicing law for 20 years in Missouri, he was instrumental in creating the railroad line from Raleigh to Springfield and the founding of Drury College, which conferred upon him an L.L.D., in consideration of his aid and devotion to education. He was a member of the Drury Board of Directors and a member of the Board of Trustees of Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He and his wife have a dormitory named after them at Pomona College (see picture), Harwood Court. He was also a corporate member of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He was a delegate to the World's Missionary Convention held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in June, 1910. He was the President of the Mexican Asphalt Paving Co., and Vice President of the Mexican Petroleum Co. He was the President of the Commercial National Bank and Citizens Savings Banks of Upland. He purchased land in CA about 6 miles by 4 miles. He was 100 when he testified March 1930 in the Edward L. Doheny trial, an oil magnate later acquitted on charges of bribery.

the Moody Church in Chicago, Ill., until 1868, when he moved to Springfield, Mo. to become pastor of the First Congregational Church. He led in the organization of Drury College in 1873, and was general agent for the college for three years. He received the degree of D.D. in 1878, and became superintendent of missions the same year. Moved to California in 1886 and became pastor of the First Congregational Church at San Diego. He assisted in the organization of Pomona College, became State Evangelist for CA in 1889, also took the lead in organizing five academies in MO and CA. He organized nearly 40 churches.

He graduated from medical college in Cincinnati in 1877 and began the practice of medicine at Dorset the same year. Dr. Harwood was of the Physio-Medico school of practice.

743. * JOSEPH M., born July 16, 1835, at Rupert Vt. Married CORNELIA BAILEY, Feb. 15, 1866. He died April 7, 1931, she died Nov. 2, 1921. He resided for three years on the home farm where their son Arthur was born. They then moved to his wife's former home in West Rupert, which house was burned in the late 20’s now owned by W. E. Lewis. In this home, two daughters, Anna and Katie were born. A short time later, Mr., Harwood bought the farm on the Rupert to Dorset road and built the house which has been his home until about six weeks ago, when he came to reside in the Thompson house. His wife died November 2, 1921. Mr. Harwood always had a keen interest in public affairs of the nation, state and town. He voted for Abraham Lincoln for president and never missed voting for a president since that time. He served the town as grand juror, lister and as representative to the legislature in 1900.

Mr. Sartelle attended Harvard and would have graduated in the class of 1885 had illness not prevented his taking his final exams. He taught mathematics at Townsend, Mass. and was principle of the school. He joined the State Mutual Life Assurance Co. in Worcester as an actuary. Was a 32nd degree Mason. Mrs. Sartelle was a very independent, proud, and well informed woman for her generation. She managed her own finances as she had seen her mother as a widow lose nearly all of her money through the dishonesty of her husband's executor.

Mr. Harwood has taken much interest in the genealogy of his line of Harwoods, and compiled and arranged in excellent form a genealogical history of the Concord Harwoods, which, however, he did not publish. (See introduction to this Volume.) Mr. Harwood was for many years in the employ of the Illinois Central Railroad Company, holding very responsible positions for the Company, and was the Vice President and General Manager of The New Kentucky Coal Company, having its head offices in Chicago. He was a very capable business man. A very complimentary notice of him appeared in "The Technical World" for February, 1912.

Harwood Lumber & Coal Company of Bloomington. In politics, Mr. Harwood was identified with the Republican Party and he and his wife were members of The Christian Scientist Church. He was highly esteemed as an alert businessman and an enterprising citizen.

1063. * BURR, born Aug. 1, 1870, at Rupert, Vt. He was a farmer and cheese maker. He died in Granville, NY on March 3, 1965. Burr first married GRACE JENKINS. Grace and their firstborn died at childbirth. Burr married on March 13, 1912 his second wife MABEL CLEVELAND LUDD, born Oct. 12, 1885. Mabel, a housewife and teacher, was born October 12, 1886 in Sandgate, Vermont to Mark & Catherine (Gragen) Ludd. Mabel died on February 6, 1978 in Granville, NY. Burr and Mabel Harwood moved to Hebron, NY in 1912. They lived on a 130 acre dairy farm 2 mi. north of West Hebron on Rte 31 in the house, now owned by Ted Cavender. Burr made cheese in three different locations in Hebron over the years, a cheese factory at East Hebron, one by the bridge near North Hebron, and a cheese factory located on Crosier Road near the present home of Gilbert Flint. Burr made cheese until the early 1920's. He then shipped milk from a herd of Jersey cows. Burr and Mabel were both seventh degree members of the Grange, he a member for 70 yrs, having joined Mt. Anthony Grange in Rupert, VT in 1895. Mabel received her 75 year membership award in 1976. They were members of' Hebron Valley Grange from 1912 until their deaths.

He represented the Rupert area in the VT State legislature in 1931 and was a town meeting moderator for 32 years. He was a teacher for a short time and then a clerk at the Dorset Grocery Store.

1091. OLIVER K., born Feb. 21, 1883, in Dorset, Vt. He was a graduate of Syracuse University, class of 1907. He married and resided in Syracuse. Oliver met his death on September 1, 1911, while trying to save the life of a comrade. Oliver, who was an assistant engineer employed by the city on the intercepting sewer construction work, went out with a fellow engineer, Rexford Lyon, to make some measurements at South Clinton and Gifford Streets. Lyon descended into the manhole and was overcome by sewer gas. Oliver quickly descended, caught Lyon and had started to ascend the ladder to the street when the gas overcame him and they both fell back into the sewer. Lyon was dead when they lifted him out and Oliver's body was not recovered for a few hours. His widow received a pension of $50 per month for life from the Carnegie Hero Fund.

He died June 10, 1974, at Shaftsbury, and is buried in South Shaftsbury.

She is a member of The Congregational Church. Mr. Harwood has been for many years in the employ of The Swift River Mfg. Co. He was a Selectman of the town of Enfield, Mass., for several years. Mr. and Mrs. Harwood fixed up the old homestead in Enfield that was occupied by their great grandfather, Benjamin Harwood, No. 211, who built the house in 1806, and made it their residence.

Thomas received his primary education in Bloomington, after which he graduated from Denver High School and the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. He spent three years in the mines of Colorado and Arizona as a mining engineer and returned to Bloomington in 1910 and became associated with his father in the lumber and coal business. In politics, he was identified with the Republican Party and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, the Elks, and the American Legion (Past Post Commander and Past State Commander). He and his family were members of the Presbyterian Church.

She was senior class president and played many sports while excelling academically and socially. She became a licensed professional nurse after attaining the age of 40. She died of natural causes in Canandaigua, NY after suffering from a stroke for several years on January 13, 2000.

He was on the staff of the Mary Fletcher hospital, the Leahy Clinic, and the Royal Victoria hospital from 1937 to 1939, an associate professor and director of student health services, promoted to the assistant dean of the UVM medical school in 1950, and the dean of the medical school in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1953.

1261. * EDWARD DUNNING, born Oct. 24, 1912, Dorset, VT. Married MILDRED ELIZA STUBBS, June 8, 1935 in Rutland, VT. She was born May 31, 1909 in Portland, ME and died in Middlebury, VT May 7, 1992. Mr. Harwood was a long time active member of the First Congregational Church of Stoughton, MA. He was killed by a falling tree at his Vermont farm on April 3, 1987. He farmed in Wallingford during the depression and after failing to get in the Army, worked in the Braintree shipyard welding destroyers. After the war he went to work for Otis Elevator and moved to Stoughton, MA. He was an Explorer Scout leader. He was a past master and a Masonic memorial Service was held in Wallingford, VT. “Dunning” as he was always known, played a large part in the building of the Sanctuary and First Unit of the Church. He daily checked the progress and quality of the work. He and several other members of the Church completed the interior of the lower level as soon as the outer walls were finished. He often said that to take part in the construction of a church was a privilege few get in a lifetime. He returned to the farm in Wallingford, VT after his retirement. Mrs. Harwood graduated Castleton Normal School 1929 with her sister Margaret (Hodgdon) and became a school teacher in Dorset, VT for 6 years. She founded and ran a babysitting service for 20 years in Stoughton, MA and was First Congregational school superintendent for 12 years.

She was a teller at the Manchester, VT Factory Point National Bank and he was a dairy farmer. Mr. Bryant served on the Manchester School Board and Selectman’s Board, and was a lister for many years. She died Mar. 1, 1987 of cancer. He remarried Christine (Todtschinder) Lawrence on Nov. 12, 1988 in Manchester VT. He died Jul. 14, 1993 in Pawlet, VT after suffering a stroke.

Married second, FLORENCE LINDSEY, daughter of Charles and Hazel (Harmer) Lindsey, of Sandgate. She was born Feb. 18, 1926. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1942, and was a prisoner of war in Stalag 17B, Krems, Austria for nineteen months. After his discharge in 1945, he worked at Eagle Square on a graduating machine and also learned the electrical trade. He was called back into the service in 1950 where he stayed until retirement as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1967. He served in England, Europe, the Philippine Islands, and spent four years in Alaska. After retirement, he worked for the State of Vermont in the Forest and Parks Department as a Park Regional Supervisor. In 1943, Miss Lindsey posed for Norman Rockwell's "Four Freedom Picture", Freedom from Want. They lived in North Clarendon, VT until 1985 when they moved to Mount Holly, Vt.

He joined the Army with the Vermont National Guard in 1942 and served in England and Europe during WW II with Company I, 172nd Infantry, 43rd Division. He retired in 1966 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He lives in Shaftsbury, Vt. and is a Side Judge in the Bennington County Court.
