FOCUS ON: DISCOVERING THE SPACE WITHIN On three days during this coming week it will be our please to welcome eighty Year 7 students from Abbey Grange Academy to Leeds Minster - 240 in total. I wonder if you can remember how you felt when you began your secondary education. No doubt with a whole range of questions, feelings and emotions – I’m sure not too dissimilar from young people today. Year 7 is the first year of secondary school. It is acknowledged that starting secondary school is a ‘rite of passage’ and one of the most important yet scary times of life.

What are they coming here to do? We’re calling the mornings Discovering the space within. We want to provide an opportunity for them to discover, explore, connect with and reflect upon their own spirit or ‘space within’. As they do so we hope this will help them make connections between their life and their relationship with God.

The students will be taking part in a number of different activities. These are all designed to engage them physically and actively in a range of spiritual reflections – for example by plaiting wool, modelling with playdough, lighting a candle. Together we hope the activities will serve to create a sense of belonging and acceptance, of both themselves and others and prepare them for life as part of a much bigger team. The activities will also contribute to the idea of making a ‘fresh start’, which all have the opportunity to do as they begin their new school.

It has been very good to work on this with Kay Brown in her role as Chaplain at the school. Please remember all who are involved, students, staff and helpers in your prayers this week. Thank you. Janet Buttanshaw
