• The North East has the highest proportion of good and outstanding primary schools in England

• Secondary school inspection performance lags behind the national average

• North East pupils do better than the national average in the proportion gaining Level 4+ in reading, writing and mathematics

• North East pupils attain broadly average results at the end of Key Stage 4 (5+CEM)

• North East pupils at Key Stage 4 make less progress from Key Stage 2 than seen nationally

• Free school meal pupils do less well than their non-FSM peers at both Key Stage 2 and 4. At Key Stage 4 the gap is much greater than seen nationally.

• By age 19 the proportion of NEETs in the North East is twice the national average.

Ofsted regional strategic priorities

There is significant variation in the performance of schools and local authorities across our region leading to the following regional priorities:

All schools good or better: and in particular to increase the proportion of good and outstanding secondary schools.

Raising standards/improving progress at Key Stage 2: and particularly for the proportion of FSM pupils who attain level 4+ in English and mathematics

Raising standards/improving progress at Key Stage 4: increasing the proportion of students (including those eligible for FSM) who attain 5+ good GCSE passes including English and mathematics.
