WELCOME TO A SEASON OF GAME-CHANGING THEATRE

We begin in September with Oscar Wilde’s groundbreaking satire on the trivialities of English society, The Importance of Being Earnest. November brings us the magic and redemption of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Considered to be the Bard’s farewell piece, it has not been seen on

this stage since the 1950s. In January, making its Hart House Theatre debut, is the ever-popular rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. With a musical score for the ages, this controversial piece changed the landscape of musical theatre and remains an audience favourite more than forty years after its premiere. Completing the season is a Canadian hidden gem that re-examined the playwriting process through a feminist lens, This Is For You, Anna. This collective creation is heartbreaking, oftentimes hilarious, and always fully engaging. A Canadian masterpiece that, in our opinion, is required viewing.

Hart House Theatre has thrived as “U of T’s Performing Arts Leader Since 1919” not only because of its loyal audience, but also through the generous financial support of private donations. I invite you to consider supporting Hart House Theatre when making your 14/15 ticket purchases. With your help, Hart House Theatre can continue its historic role of showcasing the next generation of Canadian theatrical talent. Whether as a ticket purchaser, subscriber or donor, you can make a real impact in the success of one of Canada’s most significant and important Theatres.

Most importantly, I invite you to join us for a season of plays that have revolutionized the genre, offering an entertaining playbill of popular, important and thought-provoking productions.

Break legs and steal hearts!

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNESTSEPT. 19–OCT. 4, 2014 A Trivial Comedy for Serious PeopleBy Oscar WildeDirected by Cory Doran

A farcical satire written by one of the world’s most prolific writers, The Importance of Being Earnest has stood the test of time and remains an audience favourite. This story of two Victorian aristocrats trying to escape their social burdens contains all of Oscar Wilde’s characteristic wit, Victorian charm and biting social commentary without ever becoming too serious. In Wilde’s own words, “It is exquisitely trivial…we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously, and all the serious and studied things of life with sincere and studied triviality.”

THE TEMPESTNOV. 5–22, 2014 By William ShakespeareDirected by Jeremy Hutton

One of Shakespeare’s most acclaimed plays The Tempest tells the tale of a vengeful, exiled lord who is willing to sacrifice the happiness of his beloved daughter as a means to destroy his rivals. Set on a desolate island full of mystery and magic, The Tempest explores the nature of justice, the illusion of power and the fantastical monsters that lurk within the human condition.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

ROCK OPERA

JAN. 16–31, 2015Lyrics by Tim RiceMusic by Andrew Lloyd WebberDirected by Luke Brown

The greatest rock-opera ever created, Jesus Christ Superstar has enthralled audiences since its historic and contentious Broadway opening in 1971. Based on the gospel accounts of Jesus’ final days, it is the first musical of its kind to question the divine nature of Jesus Christ. Thrilling audiences as much as it ignites debate, Jesus Christ Superstar contains some of the most memorable music of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s career—energetic, bold rock ‘n’ roll with a vocal score that is as epic as the story it tells.

THIS IS FOR YOU, ANNAFEB. 27–MAR. 7, 2015 Collectively created by Suzanne Khuri, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Banuta Rubess and Maureen WhiteDirected by Chelsea Dab Hilke

In celebration of International Women’s Day

This is for You, Anna is a haunting exploration of revenge, liberation and motherhood. Breaking the mould of contemporary theatre, it demands that we acknowledge a new perspective and a new possibility in storytelling. When it made its debut in the 1980s, it was the first of its kind: a collective creation that strove to construct a theatrical story that was wholly female. From its structure and creative process to its subject matter and performing space, This is for You, Anna is a cheekily satirical and surprisingly poignant play that stands apart even today.

Post-performance panel discussions or keynote speakers will be featured each evening throughout the show’s run. See website for details.
