THE

PROBLEM

Welding electrodes are vulnerable to atmospheric moisture.Bound moisture in electrodes yields porous welds. As a result,

electrodes fuse slowly. The arc too, is not forceful and there isan attendant spatter .

The problem is severe with Hydrogen-controlled electrodes.These electrodes are essential for critical applications.Conventional electrodes used for such applications can causeunderbead cracking in the heat-affected-zone.

The low Hydrogen Iron powder type electrodes have greataffinity for adsorbing atmospheric moisture. The release ofHydrogen from the flux during welding is detrimental to the weldquality (bead) since it causes HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT.

Manufacturers of electrodes specify desired temperature andtime for drying the electrodes prior to use.

Electrodes need to be maintained in a TOTALLY DRYCONDITION. The re-dried electrodes also need to be kept atan elevated temperature at the work point.
