It was a natural decision for PFC Sara-Jo Fegley to serve her country, withgrandparents on both sides of her family who had served in the military anda personal desire to make her mark. But she also wanted to sharpen hermind.

In search of a career, right after high school the Allentown native joinedNational Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), also known as Americorps, andwas assigned to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) forhelping residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and later with the NCCCas a certified tax preparer for the elderly in Oklahoma.

She found she liked making a contribution on both a local and nationallevel, and joined the Army National Guard in 2009. Trained in interrogationand ready for deployment in 2012, she learned that her deployment datewas moved back, and decided to take action on her goal of earning anassociate degree in criminal justice. Harcum had the program she wanted –an A.S. degree in law and justice with a flexible schedule. As aServicemembers Opportunity College (SOC), Harcum helps militarymembers by accepting credit for military training and experience, allowingreduced academic residency requirements and helping with transferringcredits. Sara-Jo will graduate in 2012.

“I wanted small classes and to be able to connect with faculty; and I’ve beenable to get both at Harcum. Everyone at Harcum – and I mean everyone –has been helpful and have worked with me to help me graduate this fall,”Sara-Jo said. “There’s a real spirit here of cooperation and commitment tothe students.” She plans to transfer to a local university to complete herbachelor’s degree.

Acceptance to Harcum College Students do not have to be accepted to Harcum beforeapplying for financial aid. However, students must beaccepted before a financial aid award will be deter-mined.
