Harold Kinas was featured in a December 26th article in the Ripon Commonwealth Press:"Treasured Nativity Now on Display".

Harold Kinas shows off the nativity set he made for his late wife, Bessie. It and other creations of his are ondisplay at the Ripon Public Library.

Wood figurines were hand-carved by Harold Kinas.

In fact, she’d show it off to family and friends every Christmas, without fail.“[Even] when she had dementia, she was at Prairie Place last year at Christmas, [the nativity set]was her big thing,” Harold said. “She had to invite everybody to come on in and see these. That’s howspecial they were to her.”Time, sadly, proved stronger than even the love forged over a 70-year marriage. And when Bessiepassed in October, Harold worried about seeing the set daily without his wife beside him.But he couldn’t bear not setting the nativity scene up either — which is why it’s now at Ripon PublicLibrary, where the whole community can gather to see his craftsmanship." Article by Ian Stepelton

"When Harold Kinas retired, he needed something to do. A wordworker by hobby through his life, Harold took up figurine carving.Whether carving an animal, Santa Claus or something else, wood blocks melted away in Harold’s fingers. Many were amazed by his work; none were more proud of what he created than Harold’s wife, Bessie. And Bessie’s prize possession? A nativity set Harold carved, painstakingly, over the course of years.

Friendship Cane for 2020 ShowOur Friendship Cane blocks are ready for you to pick up for carving and woodburning!

This is a BIG fundraiser for our club with lots of Show attendees buying tickets for this prize. Our goal is to create two canes which means we need 30-40 finished blocks; the more the merrier.

Each year club members, who are able, pick up a rectangular basswood block (there is no fee or charge for the block). The block is carved or woodburned and returned by the March meeting. The blocks are then assembled onto a dowel to make a Friendship Cane which is raffled off at our Annual Show Bucket Raffle. There are three types of blocks. Most of the blocks are 2" x 2" x 4" or 6", and these make up the bulk of the carvings. Each cane (Our goal is at least two) has a single holed 2" x 2" x 6" base (which is typically woodturned), and a similar top.

To spur your imagination one cane will have a theme: The 2020 theme is: "Animal Crackers".The other Cane is "Carver's Choice". Any design in good taste is welcome to produce an eclectic potpourri of art.

Animal Crackers Theme Ideas:

Circus Animals: Lions, Tigers, Bears, Oh My! Elephants, Performing Seals, Gorillas, Monkeys, Apes.

Make A Portable Downdraft Dust Collector for ~$75!

This downdraft design modified with a few improvements (toggle on/off switch; hand hold in end, and a more centered opening) can be made for under $100 using a 198 cfm fan which directs the dust chips downward into a collection bag. The collector is typically clamped to a workbench for use. Dust collectors are required for using rotary power tools like Dremels in classes or workshops.

ARE YOU INTERESTED? The Oshkosh Senior Center can put on a class on a Friday to assemble the collector. The mechanical parts would cost about $50 if there were at least 6 participants to share shipping costs plus a $25 OSC fee which would include the wood for an estimated total of about $75. Add your own collector bag (many use an old pillow case, and finish the wood with paint, shellac or your own finish, and you're done. Sign up sheet at meeting. People who sign up would be polled for best work date.

GREG WIRTZ CLASSGreg will hold a class at Lakeland University on January 17, 18, and 19. Cost of the class is $150 which includes the wood. Contact Jim Rooker of the Kettle Karvers at 920-918-8512.

Betsy Popp brought several raptor carvings. Clockwise from Betsy: Sharp-Shinned Hawk, Boreal Owl (I think), Harris's Hawk & two Pygmy Owls. The Harris's Hawk was carved at Krausman's. The Pygmy Owls exemplify the subject for Betsy's upcoming class. Betsy noted that for mounting large birds designing detactable legs using brass tube body inserts and leg rods make for easy packing for transport. The lichen on the Pygmy Owl branch was made using Quik Wood. Another suggestion was to drill holes in the base and fill with BBs to add stability to the art.

Here is another Betsy Popp songbird carving. Note the realistic leaves.

Show 'N Tell & the December Potluck. December 8th Christmas & Holiday Potluck continued

Besides the banquet and seconds, and, in some cases, thirds (especially on the desserts), there was plenty of good cheer and conversation, jokes, plans for the holidays and the New Year, and .... Show 'N Tell.

Paul Wolters showed his work in progress of a relief carving from a photograph.

Irene Petrik burned and painted a lovely mistletoe ornament on a small bark round and used a microwave drying technique.

Dick Turner carved a nice half sized snowy owl on a stump for his granddaughter & a half sized peregine falcon for his grandson.

Show 'N Tell & the December Potluck. December 8th Christmas & Holiday Potluck continued

Gene Bengel brought an example of a Friendship cane that his wife won at the Kettle Karvers Show. Paul Wolters also showed a Friendship Cane donated by Ron Wisneiwski's wife LaVerne which will be placed in the Raffle for our Club's 2020 show. Ron, who passed away last fall, won his cane at a past Chippers Show.Gene showed a dock hand caricature based on a Dylan Goodson roughout. The roped pillars were very frustrating and finally Gene opted for a twine shortcut. Farmboy Gene also carved a chick with his Kildeer.

The Annual Kruegers Hardware Carving DayThis annual club event will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Kruegers True Value Hardware Store, 999 Winneconne Avenue, Neenah, Wisconsin.

Each year our club gathers at Kruegers Hardware for a "Carving Day". Kruegers typically sets up cafeteria style tables and club members work on their carvings, display their art and answer questions from Krueger customers about carving. This is a way to promote our club and carving to the public. There are no club sales of tools. It is a low key, fun time for all involved. During the year, Kruegers also sets up a table or two on Wednesday afternoons for carvers to work and have the fun of talking about carving to the occasionally surprized customers. On the Annual Day in March, Krueger provides a submarine sandwich lunch and sometimes they advertise the carving event. Sign up for this event at the January & February club meetings. Kruegers will need a head count for table set up and food. There are typically ten tables or so set up with many Chippers taking part in this event.

Thanks to Paul Wolters for setting up this year's event with Kruegers Hardware.

North Building Woodshop, 200 North Campbell Road, Oshkosh, WI tel: (920) 232-5311

Keith Melzer & Dick Christensen Intermediate/Advanced - American Kestrel

This intermediate to advanced level woodcarving class will tackle carving a sparrowhawk in basswood. The finished bird will be carved, but unpainted. A separate painting class will be held after this class in April.

The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), also known as the American Sparrowhawk, is the smallest raptor with a typical height of about 9-12 inches. A falcon, its diet consists of grasshoppers, insects, mice, lizards, and small birds such as sparrows.

Your carved kestrel will be life size and carved from basswood. This three month class is taught by two master carvers and will be valuable to expand the skills of experienced carvers. A separate class on painting the kestrel will be offered beginning in April.

The Kestrel is often used as a beginner bird in falconry. It is adept at hunting starlings and sparrows, and is known to take prey twice its size.

The 2020 46th Annual Mid-Wis. Chippers Woodcarving Show on May 3rd will feature falconer Frank Ujazdowski who will bring a live falcon, possibly an American Kestrel.

Students will create a five level shading scale and using it with a shader nib to create tonal variation. This project burns the darkest areas first, in a style promoted by Minisia Robinson. Wood, sanding materials, masking tape are included. Students will bring their woodburner and a shader nib (optionally, also a skew nib), tack cloth, graphite paper, a white vinyl eraser, a red or blue ink pen, and a sealant. The 2018 Pyrography Magazine is recommended, but not required, for this class (available from www.FoxChapelPublishing.com or instructor).

Cost includes 8" x 10" baltic birch plywood. A limited number of woodburners are available at the Oshkosh Senior Center. Ask to reserve one if you do not have your own. This class is good for beginner and intermediate level pyrographers.
