Clouds of vapour rise into the night sky from our hot pool. A few flakes of snow settle on our exposed heads. Tomorrow will be a rare photo opportunity at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa – a shining carpet of new snow surrounding pools of steaming hot water.

Steamy Days and Nights

It’s winter and the Thermal Pools and Spa is a magnet for those seeking relaxation, warmth and wellbeing. Thermal springs have been soothing Kiwi bodies here for 125 years, but today’s swept-up complex is a far cry from the single pool that once lured in-the-know locals.

The Thermal Pools complex now boasts 12 open-air mineral pools, three sulphur pools, a freshwater lap pool with a “lazy river”, six private indoor thermal pools, a sauna/steam room and a separate activity area with family pool, water slides and a 15m-high SuperBowl. Pool temperatures range from 28°C to 42°C.

Overlooking the pools and landscaped grounds is a café serving good coffee, snacks, meals and drinks in a casual atmosphere.

The Thermal Pools have undergone a number of major upgrades in recent years – the latest costing $7.5 million. Among the latest additions are three adults-only AquaTherapy pools, where powerful jets massage bodies soaking in the 36°C water.

The Spa at Hanmer Springs, meanwhile, is a modern, world-class facility with a full menu of beauty and wellbeing treatments, including facials, Vichy shower, massage, hot stone therapy, body wraps, manicures and pedicures.

We’re still glowing from an 80-minute couples treatment called an Alpine Aqua Body Experience. Administered by two skilled therapists in a serene setting, it was nothing short of sublime. Now, as the snowflakes fall, we’re feeling warm and a just bit smug: winter, where’s your sting?

Winter in Hanmer Springs

We’re skimming the Waiau’s shallow, tumbling waters in a jetboat, shaving canyon walls and rocky outcrops and periodically lurching into 360-degree spins that cover us with spray. Well rugged-up, we clutch the boat’s heated handrails and marvel at the rugged scenery rushing by.

We’ve boarded the jetboat at Thrillseekers’ jetty by the Waiau River Bridge on the road into Hanmer Springs. It’s a bracing introduction to a winter weekend in this alpine resort 90 minutes north of Christchurch.

Winter in Hanmer Springs is a special time. It’s cold – we are, after all, 500 metres above sea level – but the surrounding mountains gleam in their snowy mantles, the town’s Thermal Pools are a steaming oasis of warmth, and blazing fires often greet visitors to cafés, restaurants and pubs.

Outdoor action continues through the winter months – jetboating, rafting, bungy, quad bikes, golf and mini-golf, mountain-biking and hiking, horse-riding, four-wheel adventures and, of course, skiing and snowboarding at the nearby Hanmer and Mount Lyford fields.

We’re in a less active mood, though, as we settle into our suite at The St James, one of the newest additions to the town’s accommodation scene. Light and spacious, with king-sized bed and separate kitchenette, dining and living areas, our suite has every mod con, including a double spa bath, flat-screen TVs, audio system, wi-fi, heat pump and gas log fire. Rae and Paul Baigent are attentive hosts.

The St James is close to the town’s shops, cafés, restaurants, bars and other attractions. The Thermal Pools are a short walk away and after a pleasant lunch at WhatEver bar-restaurant on Conical Hill Rd we opt for an afternoon soak.

Walking back to our digs, we window-shop. My wife browses stylish boutiques like Mhor, Rohm and Fashionworks; Lifestyles and Urban Wildlife have sport and outdoor gear; Majuba Gallery lures us with beautiful jewellery and glass art.

Back in our cosy suite we enjoy a glass of wine before strolling over to Coriander’s, a popular Indian restaurant, where we feast on prawn curry and lamb biriani.

Next morning we wrap up and go for a walk along a sun-dappled track beside the burbling Dog Stream. Lunch is a leisurely affair at Powerhouse, an excellent café and restaurant housed in an old hydroelectric power station.

Nine holes at the scenic Hanmer Springs Golf Club bring our winter weekend to an end. Alpine air. White-capped mountains. A par on the last. Perfect.

It’s decidedly chilly but absolutely beautiful on the Waiau River this sunny Saturday morning in early June.

Winter: Alpine Pacific TriangleIf you want to see some of the best of the South Island’s vibrant Hurunui region, drive the Alpine Pacific Triangle, a scenic touring loop that ticks all the boxes: rugged coastline and wildlife, snowcapped mountains and scenic valleys, vineyards and award-winning wineries, thermal pools and alpine playgrounds.

The three corners of the triangle are: Kaikoura (north), Waipara (south) and the spa town of Hanmer Springs (west).

Driving south from Picton, you’ll find Kaikoura on State Highway 1 (SH1). A one-time whaling port, Kaikoura is now famous for its whale-watching trips and encounters with playful dusky dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and seabirds. Here, snowcapped mountains drop down to the coast and lends the town a unique perspective.

As its Maori name suggests (kai: to eat, koura: crayfish), Kaikoura is also known for its seafood, especially crayfish, and you can indulge in this delicacy at several local eateries and roadside vans.

The main road south hugs the rocky coast before heading inland through rolling farmland. The Triangle’s eastern border takes in unspoilt beach settlements like Gore Bay, which lies on a scenic tourist loop off SH1 between Cheviot and Domett. Cheviot is a good place to stop for coffee or a meal at one of several cafés, or to browse galleries.

Further south, the Waipara Valley is a booming wine region whose wines regularly win awards, especially Rieslings and Pinot Noirs.

There’s a recognised wine trail around Waipara. However, some cellar doors close in winter, so it pays to pick up a Waipara Wine Trail brochure at an i-SITE visitor centre or check out the Waipara Wine Growers website (www.waiparawine.co.nz) for details.

Waipara has 24 wineries and some offer food as well as wine tastings. For lunch, try the award-winning restaurant at Pegasus Bay Winery, 3km off the main road (bookings a must), Mud House Winery Café on the main road, or Waipara Springs Winery & Café.

Wine has put Waipara on the map, but the area has other attractions, including a fascinating sculpture park at Iron Ridge Quarry (Ram Paddock Rd) and, at Glenmark, a vintage steam engine offering sedate rides into the past (first and third Sundays of the month) through the weird limestone formations of Weka Pass.

Hanmer Springs, meanwhile, has long been famous for its mineral hot pools, which, along with a world-class spa, are particularly popular during the cold winter months. This alpine village has grown rapidly in recent years and now offers a wide range of outdoor activities, as well as top-class accommodation, eateries, bars and shopping.

Skiers and snowboarders can get their winter fix at the nearby skifield of Hanmer Springs. Mount Lyford is another uncrowded field. It’s on SH70, the road back to Kaikoura.

The pretty town of Cheviot is a popular stop along State Highway 1. About halfway between Kaikoura and Amberley on the eastern leg of the Alpine Pacific Triangle touring route, Cheviot is a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal in one of several good cafés that line the highway.

One of the cafés, Two Rivers (Cheviot lies between the Hurunui and Waiau rivers), also has an excellent gallery selling everything from artisan jewellery and ceramics to sculptures and high-priced paintings. Another gallery, Crossroads, represents local artists and craftspeople, while the White Cat Emporium sells French and Italian antiques from a rustic roadside barn.

Cheviot came into being in the late 19th century after the vast Cheviot Hills estate of William “Ready Money” Robinson was divided into smaller farms. A small museum (open in winter by arrangement) near the school showcases the history of the district. Today, the town services a rural community of some 1,500 people with amenities such as a medical centre, a supermarket, a well-patronised pub, an award-winning butchery, a service station and farm-supplies store.

Away from the main street, Cheviot is full of delightful surprises like the Cheviot Hills Domain, a woody haven that rings with birdsong and contains specimen trees dating from the 1860s.

Drive through the reserve from SH1 and you’ll come to Gore Bay Tourist Drive, which runs through the holiday settlement of Gore Bay, with its surf and swimming beach and “Cathedrals” limestone formations. The drive rejoins the main road south at Domett.

For cyclists, mountain-bikers and walkers, Cheviot boasts a number of tracks taking in stunning coastal and rural scenery, hill country and flats, while golfers will find a beautiful 12-hole course a few kilometres from the main street. Both the Hurunui and Waiau rivers run with trout, salmon and whitebait. Five minutes north of the township, meanwhile, St Anne’s Lagoon is home to a variety of waterfowl and is a lovely spot for a picnic.

Two local vineyards, Charles Wiffen Wines and Mt Beautiful, produce well-regarded cool-climate wines.

Location and Access

From the Hanmer Springs village, take the Clarence Valley Road up over Jack’s Pass, turn left when you get to the river and in another few minutes you come to St James Station.

Turn left up the ski field road. This is an alpine road with associated conditions so please always check the ski report for road conditions and follow the instructions. Carry chains and be prepared to fit them. If you are unfamiliar with driving in alpine access roads, 4WD is recommended or alternatively a shuttle runs daily from Hanmer Springs Village.

The large ski area is serviced by one T-bar, two Platters, one fixed grip learner’s tow and Upper & Lower Terako rope tow. Tows access a wide variety of learner and intermediate terrain and the Upper Terako rope tow offers advanced skiing and riding in the Terako Basin, plus is great for first time nut-cracker users.

The rolling terrain at Mt Lyford creates ideal slopes for all those learning and developing their ski or snowboard ability. The Wild Ride Terrain Park has been developed with a natural terrain chute leading into jumps, kickers and rails to cater for snowboarders and skiers alike. For those not skiing or riding, there is an area dedicated to snow tubing.

The sunny Terako Day Lodge & Chamois café has views of the entire mountain. Carving ski’s, snowboards and tube hire is available and the Alpine Coaching School offers lessons for beginners to experts. 

Mt Lyford Alpine Resort is situated 140km north of Christchurch. The resort is considered New Zealand’s first true alpine development, ideal for recreation and leisure. It’s an excellent place to ski or ride, and has a wide range of terrain and facilities for all abilities.
