With one of the city’s most famous historical landmarks — Qutub Minar — as its star attraction, the nearby area has a lot more to offer visitors. this weekend. With one of thecity’s most famous historicallandmarks — Qutub Minar —as its star attraction, thenearby area has a lot more tooffer visitors. From high-endrestaurants, to a flowermarket with good deals, andan archeological park, here’sa look at what all to expect.
Minar and moreAs you enter the Qutubcomplex, check out theQuwwat-ul-Islam, consideredby many as India’s first bigmosque. The Iron Pillar atthe central courtyard drawsthe maximum attention ofthe visitors. Surrounded byan open courtyard, this iswhere most tourists like toget themselves clicked. Asunny winter afternoon is thebest time to visit thecomplex, followed by a picnicin the parks nearby. The
monument also opens forvisitors a couple of hours inthe evening.
Lessons in archeologyJust adjacent to the QutubMinar Complex is theMehrauli Archeological Park.Spread over 100 acres, thepark is a delight for natureand history lovers. From the70 monuments here, theJamali Kamali tomb andmosque are the principalattractions. The Lal Kot wallsof pre-islamic times, Rajaonki Baoli (Delhi’s oldest step-well) and Metcalfe’sFolly (a hilltop canopy),which offers an bird’s eyeview of the park, are a mustvisit. Dada Bari, a modernmarble Jain temple withbeautiful carvings next door,is also worth a visit.
Flower power A small lane next to theMehrauli bus terminalhouses a long lane of flowervendors, who used to sit at abig flower mandi in the areauntil it was shut down. Now,the vendors set up shop earlymorning along the lane witha variety of flowers likemarigolds, Dutch roses,
orchids, lilies andchrysanthemums.
Eating options The roads nearby have afew dhabas that offer aquick meal of dal-roti orrajma chawal. If you’rebrave enough for street
food, give them a shot. Youcan also head to KalkadassMarg next to Qutub Minar,which has a number ofrestaurants, such as, Circa1193 (a rooftop restaurantknown for its Sunday brunch-es), Olive Bar and Kitchen (aEuropean-styled eatery), and,Thai High (an eatery famousfor Thai curries).
