Handling Unit - Motivation

Usually, the logistics of a company are not based on individual materials, but on packages consisting of certain quantities of materials. In the SAP system, these physical units are represented by handling units.

After a HU has been created, the information contained in the HU can be used in all subsequent processes. Most importantly, HUs can be transferred throughout the logistical system and passed on to partners in the supply chain. They can also be changed if necessary.

The purpose of handling units is to simplify the logistics process:

Page 4: Handling Unit Management.ppt

Handling Units: Technical Background I

are based on shipping units. integrate business processes across all logistics applications. do not require document references and are independent

objects (unlike shipping units). are linked to storage units, whereby the highest-level HU

corresponds to the storage unit. The WM system automatically creates storage units for the handling units.

can be managed in WM interim storage areas such as the GR area or the GI area.

Handling Units and Inventory Management

A handling unit is an inventory managing object.

With Handling Unit Management you can control your processes with packed stocks on storage location level. The handling unit knows the exact stock category of the packed stock.

All stocks in HU-managed storage locations are packed. Only HU-managed storage locations guarantee that the sum of all HU stocks corresponds to the stocks of the IM storage location.

Goods movements in HU-managed storage locations are only possible if the handling unit containing the stock to be posted is specified.

If handling units are changed, unpacked stocks are posted to non-HU-managed storage locations. Packed stocks are posted to HU-managed storage locations.

Handling Unit - Overview of Processes II

The handling unit identification supports goods movements for packages without the need to specify the materials or the quantities. Such goods movements may include: Putaway, pick, stock transfers within the warehouse (using Warehouse

Management) Material posting changes to a different storage location Posting changes of the stock category Goods issue and goods receipt for production

Goods movements initiated by material-related postings create deliveries. In these deliveries the corresponding HUs are assigned. Thus all movement types are supported.

Page 10: Handling Unit Management.ppt

Handling Unit - History

All documents concerning a HU are recorded on the highest level of the HU. These documents may include: inbound and outbound deliveries material documents work orders pick processes

The history allows you to track the HU throughout the complete process for process documentation purposes for information purposes

Detailed information such as the sales order, transfer orders or split deliveries can be accessed via the document flow of the deliveries involved.

Handling Unit - Definition

Handling Unit (HU) is the SAP term for a package (pallet, container, truck) and describes the physical combination of packaging material (e.g. pallet, carton, shrink-wrap, container,

truck) goods (to be shipped, stored, used, etc.)

Each HU has a unique identification. All necessary information is contained in this identification number.

Characteristics of SU and HU

Warehouse Management works with storage units. Each storage unit created from a HU keeps its reference to the handling unit.

The HU can be displayed in the stock overviews.

Evaluations are performed on the level of the storage unit, the highest packing level of the HU.

Lower-level HUs are not immediately visible in WM stock overviews.

When picking partial quantities of a storage unit, the affected lower-level handling units or serial numbers have to be recorded.

Handling Units and Serial Numbers

A handling unit identifies a group of materials.A serial number identifies one piece of a material.A serial number can pass through several HUs during its history, but it is only active in one HU.Serial numbers are entered when

creating a HU changing a HU (Repacking, Picking)

Serial numbers are copied into the delivery at the time of goods issue posting.A delivery split with serial numbers can only be carried out with the help of handling units.

Page 25: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 25

Handling Units and Quality Management (QM)

The handling unit knows the inspection lots of the materials it contains.

The inspection type in the material master determines whether inspections take place for the handling unit.

Exercises: Scenario

1. It is your responsibility to ensure that each handling unit in your HU-managed storage location has a unique identification. Check the HU requirement for your storage location and make the required Customizing settings.

2. Your IDES vendor delivers screens packed in cartons. These cartons are stored on pallets. This packaging is recorded in the goods receipt area and the pallet is put away in the WM-managed warehouse as a nested handling unit. You want to assign the identification of the pallets and cartons for your combination of plant/storage location according to SSCC18.

1. Create TO with reference to delivery The Warehouse Management System determines the storage bins from

which materials are to be picked.2. Create picking container (Pick HU)

If complete storage units are picked no separate picking container is necessary.

3. Confirm material withdrawal Record picking difference quantities Assign picked items to picking container

4. Complete picking Report arrival of picking containers in GI area

Page 43: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 43

Transfer Order Creation

TO creation with delivery reference

For each delivery item the systems uses the picking strategy to find stocks that can be picked Decisions depend on the material and the quantity HUs to be picked cannot be determined in the delivery User exits exist for picking e.g. specific serial numbers or mixed

pallets

A TO split ensures that the TO contains only HU-relevant or only non-HU-relevant items.

Page 44: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 44

Picking with Pick HUs

A pick HU is required whenever only a partial quantity of a storage unit is picked.

The pick HU must be created and assigned to the transfer order before the TO is confirmed. When creating the pick HU, you can print a pick-HU label.

Procedure for pick HU creation: Manual pick HU creation using transaction LH01 Automatic pick HU creation at the time of TO creation

Additional pick HUs can be generated manually using transaction LH01.

User exit; one TO can be assigned several pick HUs

Page 46: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 46

Pick-HU Assignment in the Transfer Order

If a shipping material is not automatically assigned when the TO is created, the system will generally create one line for the pick handling unit for every destination storage bin. In this line, the packaging material or the handling unit can be entered.

Page 47: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 47

Updated Pick-HU Assignments

Updated entries cannot be edited. The assignments made automatically at TO creation cannot be deleted. Only assignments created manually (with transaction LH01) can be edited (deleted) subsequently.

Page 48: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 48

Transfer Order Confirmation

Transfer order confirmation can be carried out in two steps

First step: Confirmation of material withdrawal The Material is cleared from the storage bin and posted to the pick HU. Picking differences must be reported during the first step. The delivery is not updated.

Second step: Confirmation of material transport The transport of the pick HU to the shipping area is confirmed in the

second step. The Material is available at the destination storage bin. Differences require a repacking process. Picked quantities and pick HUs are reported to the delivery.

Page 49: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 49

Confirmation of Material Withdrawal – Scenario 1

Picking complete storage units:

When a TO is created, the Warehouse Management System decides whether a storage unit can be picked completely.

A storage unit can be a nested HU. A storage unit can be picked into a pick HU.

In this case the result is a nested pick-HU. If the storage unit is not picked into a pick HU, it is reported directly

to the delivery when the TO is confirmed. In this case the storage unit retains its number.

Page 50: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 50

Confirmation of Material Withdrawal – Scenario 2

Picking partial quantities:

For every TO item the picked quantity must be assigned to a pick HU.

A TO item can be divided into two pick HUs. A TO item cannot be assigned to a lower-level HU of the pick HU. It is possible to pick entire lower-level HUs; the lower-level HUs

must be recorded. It is also possible to pick partial quantities from lower-level HUs.

If the picked materials are managed with serial numbers, the picked serial numbers have to be recorded.

Page 51: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 51

Confirmation of Material Withdrawal – Differences

Difference handling:

Difference quantities are posted to a „differences HU“ in the differences storage type.

The differences HU is created automatically. Differences cannot be recorded when picking a serialized material. If differences occur for picks from nested HUs, the system needs to

be informed in which lower-level HU the difference occured.

Page 52: Handling Unit Management.ppt

Entire lower-level HUs can be transferred to the pick HU. The pick HU becomes a nested HU.

The entire quantity of material in the lower-level HU can be transferred into the pick HU without transferring the lower-level HU.

Partial picks from lower-level HUs are possible.

Exercises – Scenario

1. In your warehouse the screens, which are packed in cartons, are picked on pallets. The pallets are then shipped as shipping HUs. Define the automatic creation and assignment of the pick HU for outbound delivery transfer orders.

2. Test the system‘s reaction to picking an entire HU and to partial picks of the nested handling units.

Handling Unit Picking (with WM)

Production order is released and creates a requirement. This requirement can technically be a transfer requirement (TR) or an outbound delivery. Picking for the delivery is done as usual (TO with confirmation). If a TR is created, the TO will be created automatically and then confirmation finishes the process. GI posting is done fro the production order or for the delivery.

Production supply is processed to an HU managed storage location because GI will be posted to the particular HU. No backflush is needed. Also, for pick parts WM-PP production supply will be needed.

Packing station: Customizing

To use the packing station you have to define how Handling Units are created at this place: Terminal identification Packing station type: You can differentiate between packing deliveries

(inbound and outbound deliveries) and creating handling units without object reference.

Exercises – Scenario

1. The screens produced by IDES AG are packed in production before putaway into the warehouse. Define a packing instruction for the finished products and pack the materials before you process the putaway.

2. In the warehouse of the IDES AG, materials are packed during picking (pick & pack) as well as at the packing station before goods issue. Test the different possibilities to pack delivery items.

Identification

Number assignment has to be unique Number range for LE_SSCC has to be defined Internal number range has to be defined Without overlap to ERP/DEC and storage unit number range To adopt the HU-identification from the vendor: Use SSCC18 or define

an according external number range Length of the number range for storage units has to converted to the

HU identification External number assignment in production is only possible with an

user-exit For number assignment in production, a default entry without plant

and storage location has to exist

To carry out logistics via HU-identification instead of material and quantity you need following configuration settings concerning HU-identification:

Page 93: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 93

Basic Configuration

Maintain the internal number range interval in the maximum range How should numbers be assigned? Define number range

configuration accordingly Activate unique number assignment Which groups of packing materials exist? Define packaging

material types Which groups of materials with regard to how they are packed

exist (e.g. liquids, bulk material, small parts)? Define material group for packaging materials

Define packing hierarchy: Which material group for packaging materials can be packed into which packing material?

Define storage locations as HU-managed only possible for unique number assignment and packaging materials

with a corresponding number assignment

Page 94: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 94

Material movements

Material movements affecting HU-managed storage locations are only possible if the Handling Unit concerned is given

Possible movements from the Handling Unit Monitor: Transfer posting to unrestricted stock Transfer posting to blocked stock Transfer posting to quality inspection stock Transfer posting to different storage location

With deliveries, all material movements are possible. Using an IM transaction (MBxx) to post to an HU-managed storage location a delivery is created. The data necessary to post have to be maintained in configuration. Otherwise, an error message occurs.

Page 95: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 95

Material Movements

With transaction VLMOVE: Material movements for a few movements types can be posted directly

for the HU Deliveries can be created for HUs or materials. As well, necessary data

for the posting is taken from the HU configuration For goods receipt from production and goods issue to production

specific transactions exist (COWBPACK, COPAWA, COWBHUWA and COPAWE).

Goods receipt for purchase orders are processed in principle with deliveries (the confirmation control key has to be set in the purchase order) GR for Advanced Shipping Notification is deactivated to prevent the

creation of a new delivery Confirmation as of 4.6C is independent from HU‘s

Page 96: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 96

Material Movements

Stock transfers via two step procedure are possible As direct posting with movement types 303 and 305 as well as 313

and 315 with VLMOVE With deliveries. A workflow scenario exists where the GI posting

for the outbound delivery creates an inbound delivery automatically. The Handling Units posted GI are assigned to the inbound delivery in case of A follow-up delivery type to the delivery type exists The delivery type is an outbound delivery type (VBTYP is J)

You find more detailed information in the consulting OSS note 340238.

Page 97: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 97

Repacking and HU Changes

Repacking is a combination of packing and unpacking

A transfer posting from the non-HU managed partner storage location is done if there is more packed than unpacked quantity. If there is more unpacked than packed quantity, the unpacked quantity is posted to the partner storage location.

Repacking and changes of an HU can be forbidden because: Delivery HU is packed in a shipment Status denies changes (GI posted, blocked, user status) HU is in WM in a storage type that does not allow direct IM postings

because of a stock placement strategy or capacity checks Then, you have to bring the HU to a different storage type (interim storage

type, for example 925 – Packing) before it can be changed. HU cannot be blocked

Page 98: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 98

Production

Material staging to production Alternatives: Packing of the components for the work order without

WM or assignment of an existing HU to the work order As soon as an HU is assigned to an order, it can be posted GI for the

work order completely or partially HUs assigned to a work order and that are not needed anymore can be

assigned to a different order. Deleting the assignment is not possible. Production storage location is non-HU managed. For back flushed

materials, already staged HUs have to be deleted manually time by time.

Finished products repetitive or in discrete manufacturing HU creation only material and batch specific Serial number assignment not possible (later with HU02) No giving of shelf life expiration date possible

Page 99: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 99

Serial Numbers

To be able to use serial numbers in a HU, the serial number profile of the material has to contain the serializing procedure HUSL.

The configuration entry optional/mandatory referes to the optional/mandatory entry of the HU before saving it. Transfer postings of an HU to an HU-managed storage location is possible only with serial numbers principally, i.e. in an HU-managed storage location it is mandatory to have serialization.

Delivery split with serial numbers is only possible with using Handling Units. A quantity based split ist not allowed.

Page 100: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 100

Pick HU and Packing Station

A typical scenario is picking of materials into a warehouse container (the pick HU) and the transfer to a packing station. There, the material is repacked into the shipping handling unit.

The function of Empty is not available at the packing station, i.e. to pack material into the shipping HU, the pick HU has to be deleted or the materials have to be unpacked individually.

Page 101: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 101

Archiving

HUs are no longer connected to document archiving of the delivery or shipment. There is a report responsible for archiving Handling Units.

Page 102: Handling Unit Management.ppt

SAP AG Handling Unit Management / 102

Database Indexes

Searching for specific Handling Units? Yes criteria? Activate Indexes or create your own No do nothing

When searching for a specific material with plant/storage location combination or displaying the HU overview from transaction MMBE, an index should created for the fields MATNR, WERKS, LGORT on the HU item VEPO.When working without packing instructions or using them only for creation of HUs, no index should be created or activated that contains these packing instructions.

Standard indexes: EXIDV – Identification number VPOBJ, VPOBJKEY – assigned object

In table VEVW an index OBJECT OBJKEY should be created. In general: the more indexes there are on one table the slower any

access to the database will be - write or read.
