Sponge filter

Heater

Quality goldfish food for conditioningAnd live foods, daphnia, tubi, mosquito larvae etc

Dapnia mosquito larvaetubifex worm 10 gallon fry tank

CHOOSING THE PAIRBegin by selecting your pair. Make sure that you know that you have a male and a female or you will never end up with fry! During breeding season, malegoldfish sport little white dots (called breeding stars) on their gill covers and on the edges of the pectoral fins. His vent is usually longer and more open during this time.Femalegoldfish are typically rounder in the abdomen and expand even more so when filled with eggs. You may be able to see the white protrusion of her vent when she is ready to spawn. These fish should neither be too old nor too young because the goal is to get as many eggs as possible out of the pair the ideal age is between 1-3 years of age, or at least 3 inches long not including the tail. Make sure that the pair is in premium health (good color, hearty appetite, perky behavior) and has few to no genetic defects. If you plan on selling the fry to make any kind of a profit, pet store goldfish will not produce worthy specimens. It is worth the higher price to invest in a show-quality or nearly show-quality pair for beautiful babies.

SPAWNING THE PAIR

You will need your Tupperware box or ceramic bowl to catch the eggs. Fillitwith about 3 inches of fish-safe water and a spawning mop, if desired. Place the box close to the tank, and then gently transfer the male goldfish to the box. Here is the tricky part. Hold him belly up gently but firmly under the water with your left hand. He will thrash initially, but should quickly submit. Using your index and middle finger, softly apply pressure between his pelvic fins near his vent. You should see a whitish milky stream coming out; this is the milt that will fertilize the eggs. The water may turn cloudy if he produces a lot. Swirl the water with his tail in order to distribute the milt through the water. Hold him again in that position, repeat the process until no more milt comes out. Swirl the water each time the stream ends. Leaving him in the Tupperware or bowl, get the female and hold her in the same position. If she is full and gravid, the eggs may pour out on their own as she wriggles. Perform the same technique on her as you did the male, swirling the water frequently as the eggs come out. Swirling prevents the sticky eggs from clumping together upon contact with the water. If they clump, their growth will be inhibited, making swirling imperative. Here is a helpfulvideo of hand-breeding goldfish.Continue the process until the eggs stop coming. Leave both of the pair in the water to rest for about 10 minutes not too long or they may devour all the eggs! Then return them to the tank.
