Let’s talk about halves! This pizza is divided into two parts. When we divided something into two equal parts, we call each part a half.

Let’s Talk about

Fractions If I ate 1 half of the pizza, I could write this as a fraction. A fraction represents part of a whole. In this case I ate 1 out of the 2 parts.

How do I write a fraction?•When I make my fraction I put the part on top. This is called the numerator.•The number of parts goes on the bottom, this is called the denominator. •So I ate 1 part, so the number 1 goes on top.•There were 2 parts total, so the number 2 goes on the bottom.

Now Let’s Talk About Thirds!•This pizza is divided into three equal parts.

•We call each of these parts a third.

•Remember a fraction represents part of a whole.

•So if I ate one piece this pizza, I would eat one third of it. We can write this as a fraction.

•In the denominator I would put the number 3 because there are 3 pieces total.

•In the numerator I would put 1, because I ate 1 piece.

Now Let’s Talk About Fourths!•This pizza is divided into four equal parts.

•We call each of these parts a fourth.

•Remember a fraction represents part of a whole.

•So if I ate one piece this pizza, I would eat one fourth of it. We can write this as a fraction.

•In the denominator I would put the number 4 because there are 4 pieces total.

•In the numerator I would put 1, because I ate 1 piece.
