Haitian Agriculture• The food crisis in Haiti

can be directly linked to the Haitian Agricultural system.

• Haiti’s high food prices are caused by a global rise in food prices and by Haiti’s heavy reliance on imported foods

• We will discuss the cost, needs, distribution as well as crops.

Crops

• Produces and exports coffee, cocoa, meat sugar

• Coffee and Sugar are the main crops

• Imports Rice from U.S.• Food crops and cash

crops• Crops cultivated are red

beans, black beans, mangoes, and etc…

Needs

• Three quarter of the Haitian population are at the risk of starvation

• The demise of the agricultural system has led to the need for food and financial assistance to try to help revive the Haitian economy.

• Needs seeds, fertilizers, farming equipments and irrigation system upgrade.

Distribution

• The distribution of crops by Haiti has diminished considerably with the demise of the farming system.

• Decrease in exports & increase in imports.

• Imports about 360,000 metric tons of rice annually in to Haiti.

• Haiti’s sugar exports dropped from 19,200 tons in 1980 to 6,500 tons in 1987.

Cost

• Importing of rice from the United States is currently costing Haiti around $270 million annually.

• In Haiti, three-quarters of the population live on $2.00 a day.

• The combined hikes in the cost of food, and the low wages and high gas prices have combined to decimate the economy as well as families .

• The cost of food in Haiti has risen by more than 50 percent within the last year.
