Conditions in the aftermath

o People slept in the streets losing their family and home

o Trucks collecting thousands and thousands of bodies to bury in mass graves

o Due to heat and humidity smell of bodies hangs on air

Humanitarian response

• Humanitarian aid was given by International Red Cross ,the salvation army, US troops

• MINUSTAH troops landed the MH-53E largest helicopter type operated by US• International Committee of Red Cross set up new websites to facilitate family contacts

o Haitians felt water was safer than land following numerous attacks

o Hillary Clinton-stated that $48 million has been already raised by US

Casualties

o Estimate of no of death increased to45,000 shortly and then to 2,50,000 after six days

o Experts caution that any death toll will be a ‘guesstimate’ as the scale makes accurate toll impossible

o Three year old baby was taken alive after a week pulled out from the rubble

o Brazilian paediatrician and Nobel peace prize nominee Zilda Arns and many public figures died
