  • Editor's Introduction

In updating Hair Growth Secrets for 2011, we are indebted to the countlessmen and women over the years who have helped make this possible.

Thanks to your dedication and striving to find dietary elements that impactyour hair loss, you have provided a window of hope to thousands of othermen and women. You took the extra step to contact us so that we couldspread your priceless information, and on behalf of Allied Natural, and all ofour clients, we thank you.

For 2011, we continue to divide the report into three sections: Foods thatFight Hair Loss, Foods that Cause Hair Loss, and lifestyle. The first two arefairly straight forward: a number of foods have now been proven to reversehair loss if eaten on a regular, near-daily basis. Likewise, a number of foodsand food-like substances now commonplace in the diet have been shown tocause and perpetuate hair loss, and thus hair regrowth can only occur whenthese things are completely eliminated from the diet.

The lifestyle section is the fastest growing section of Hair Growth Secrets. Before 2007, we didn't even have a lifestyle section. Now, countless reportshave come to us over the last three years of other methods for reversinghair loss that don't fall into the category of diet. Things like householdcleaning products, cell phone usage, and more.

The men and women who find the most success with us are the men andwomen who read the report in its entirety and follow it as closely as

  • possible. But as a disclaimer, I must remind you that this is not medicaladvice, and for medical advice of any kind you should consult your healthcare provider.

Make no mistake, daily use of the Stimulair Oral Supplement and StimulairShampoo / Conditioner will help you make great strides in your recovery. But, following this diet helps build the strongest possible foundation for aneffective hair loss strategy.

Stick to it. You can do it.

Yours in success,The Allied Natural Team

FOODS THAT ACTUALLY FIGHT HAIR LOSS

For many men and women suffering from hair loss, this can be the holygrail. Most men and women who begin losing their hair have a deep, intrinsicsense that maybe their diet is not quite right, or that there may besomething they can eat to help them grow their hair back.

At first, drugs provide the easy answer. Minoxidil, otherwise known asrogaine, seem like the best choice for some, while others may experimentwith herbal supplements.

However, as you will soon learn, it is not only possible to grow your hairback with a proper diet, it is the recommended method because it works formost men and women. But the changes to diet are not easy. We'll open with

  • a true story that will help illustrate our first and most important concept.

Something strange occurred in New York City in the fall of 2008. BeckySnider was a 35 year old woman who noticed one day that her hair wasthinning. She was married and had not yet had a child, but had been talkingwith her husband Michael about attempting pregnancy soon. She worked fora large corporation in the telecom industry and felt that future promotions, keeping her husband attracted to her, and her own self esteem were allheavily influenced by her appearance, and losing her hair was just about theworse thing that could possibly happen.

Becky immediately did some research online to find out what she could do toremedy her hair loss. Though her hair was thinning more and more eachday, with the hair loss most prominent on the top-center of the scalp. Shedidn't want to take prescription medications like Rogaine(tm) and felt thatan imbalance in her body chemistry, perhaps a deficiency of some sort, wasto blame.

So Becky did what most men and women do as a first step, and go buysome vitamins. She bought folic acid, silica, a B-Complex, Vitamin C withbioflavanoids, and many others. After a month on the vitamins it onlyseemed like her hair loss was accelerating. She was growing increasinglystressed about the problem.

Quite randomly, on an afternoon during the whole ordeal, Becky Snider raninto Cynthia Matthews, a woman actively involved in R&D for Allied Natural. They were in line together at a Starbucks while Cynthia was talking on thephone to an excited woman seeing improvement in her own hair loss.Cynthia got off the phone with the woman, but Becky couldn't help butoverhear a part of the conversation, and they soon struck up a conversationabout hair loss.

The first thing Becky told Cynthia was about her new vitamin regimen, andhow it didn't seem to work. Cynthia, who had seen this too many times tocount, shook her head and told her, "Becky, listen to me. Perhaps the mostimportant thing you can do is to start eating these foods every day."

  • Becky got out a pen and a pad of paper (after they got their coffees) andbegan to write as Cynthia gave her the list of foods below. Some of thesefoods have valid explanations as to why they would have a therapeutic effecton your hair, while others we can only guess. The one thing they all have incommon is that each one has been attested to by multiple men and womenwho have used them to reverse their hair loss.

Two months later, out of the blue, Cynthia got a call from Becky Snider.Becky could barely contain herself she was so excited. "Cynthia, I ate allthe foods you recommended. God, it was hard at first to completely changemy diet. I slipped up a little bit at first. But then I got in the habit of onlybuying the foods you told me when I was at the grocery store."

    "And?" Cynthia asked.

"And it's grown back! All the spots on my scalp where I was losing hair, it'scompletely come back!"

"Oh, I'm so glad," said Cynthia.

"And that's not all! I feel healthier than I've ever felt in my life and have somuch more energy! And I owe it all to you!"

They chatted for a moment and got off the phone.

We like to begin with this true story to illustrate, up front, one of the mostimportant points for men and women to understand when preparing to fighttheir hair loss.

A lot of men and women, when they start losing their hair, resortimmediately to vitamins without any idea of the proper proportions andcombinations required to actually have an effect. Luckily, we've put this

  • together in the Stimulair Oral Supplement. But to truly treat the root causeof your hair loss, we need to examine your diet quite thoroughly.

This is why Cynthia instructed Becky to start eating these foods. Time andagain, we've seen that men and women who switch to a diet rich in thesefoods experience a tremendous recovery.

This section of the book deals with foods that you should be consuming on aregular basis in order to get your body's physiological environment in peakcondition to support hair growth. Next to each food is an indication of howmany times per week you should be consuming a serving of the food foroptimal benefits.

You should strongly consider purchasing these foods every time you gogrocery shopping. Many men and women will buy almost only these things, with very little else. This can be a challenging approach, but shows successin a huge % of cases.

    Live Cultures

Live cultures have again and againbeen cited by men and women as a"wonder cure" for hair loss. Thefoods detailed in this section areabundant in live cultures. Perhapsyou've heard of "Probiotics" whichare often touted as the "next bigthing" for health food advocates.Probiotics, sometimes referred toas "live cultures" are good bacteriathat live in your stomach and aid you in digestion. Digestion is one of themost important processes of our body and also one of the most taken for

  • granted. Without proper digestion, your body can't extract the nutrients itneeds from foods. Without proper digestion, your body's hormonal profilewill be skewed. Without proper digestion, your body simply won't functionproperly.

The reason people are jumping up and down over probiotics is clear: theyoffer amazing digestive benefits. In fact, a growing body of scientificevidence has now proven that not only can you treat, but you can alsoprevent numerous illnesses by supplementing your body's probiotic profile. And our own research has shown that probiotics can be immensely powerfulin growing your hair back.

Although probiotics are technically bacteria, they're completely safe. In fact, they're already present in your gut, helping you digest. However, broadspectrum antibiotics, taken commonly for a number of illnesses, also kill thegood bacteria. Most people have taken a broad spectrum antibiotic at somepoint in their lives, unaware of the negative consequences this can have onthe good bacteria living in their gut.

The only way to ensure proper digestion is to have a diet rich in probiotics. It is recommended that you consume probiotic foods once per day, and aminimum of 4 times per week. Here are the best probiotic foods to work intoyour diet:

    Yogurt: eat 4x per week

  • When selecting a yogurt for it'sprobiotic content, you must bediligent and read the label. It mustsay on the label that it contains"active live cultures." You'll also wantto look for a statement that says thecultures were added afterpasteurization, a process which killsall the living organisms in a food.

Because yogurt comes from milk, it contains much needed animal protein, along with calcium, magnesium, potassium, b-12 and b-2. Deficiencies incalcium as well as magnesium have garnered particular attention recently inthe discussion over hair loss. Full support comes from the scientificcommunity showing that a deficiency in calcium or magnesium can causehair loss. Perhaps this answers the question of why something as simple asthe addition of yogurt to the diet can have a positive impact on men andwomen experiencing hair loss.

If you're lactose intolerant: Hunt around for a coconut-yogurt. They'redairy free and just as good for you as dairy-based yogurt. And, from thedata we've gathered, it's just as effective. Just make sure it contains activelive cultures, which it will say on the container.

    Sauerkraut: eat 4x per week

  • Like yogurts, not all sauerkrauts are created equal.Sauerkraut is chopped cabbage that has beenfermented, and it's health benefits have beentouted for over a thousand years due to uniquechanges that occur in the food during thefermentation processes.

During the fermentation process, certainphytochemicals are produced that have long shownan ability to to decrease a broad spectrum of

health problems. This is because sauerkraut is one of the single best foodsyou can eat to aid your digestion.

The fermentation process also produces a substance called isothiocynates.Isothiocynates are a bit of a mystery right now to scientists, because theyhave been shown in clinical trials to substantially inhibit nearly all forms ofcancer. It is not known yet if this substance is also partially responsible forthe beneficial effects sauerkraut has on hair loss, but it is possible.

Also present in Sauerkraut is the probiotic Lactobacilli plantarum. Sauerkrautis one of the few foods that contain this particular strain of probiotic whichhas powerful health benefits. Lactobacilli neutralizes antinutrients present incountless foods including the phytic acid present in all grains and thetrypsin-inhibitors in soy. In doing so, it generates new nutrients includingomega-3s, various digestive aids and the trace mineral GTF chromium thatmany men and women are deficient in.

Touted by many as the healthiest food in the world, Sauerkraut should be asmuch of a daily part of your diet as possible. However, you must be carefulto select a raw sauerkraut, and if you can find organic sauerkraut evenbetter. No pasteurized sauerkraut will contain the health benefits notedabove, because all of the probiotics have been killed in the pasteurizationprocess.

Serving size tip: to get the full benefit of sauerkraut, you need only eat

  • one or two fork-fulls per day. Just make sure it is raw, unpasteurized, andorganic. As you'll see below, the easiest way to do this is to buy an organiccabbage for two or three dollars, and make it yourself!

Dollar Saver Tip: Make your own Sauerkraut!

Because organic raw sauerkrautcan be very expensive and verydifficult to find, the best option isto make your own raw organicSauerkraut. All you need is a headof cabbage and salt. Organiccabbage goes for about 69 centsper pound, and so just two dollarscan get you a few pounds ofcabbage and enough sauerkraut toeat it daily for a week. It takes twoweeks from the day you chop thecabbage to the day it's ready, sobe prepared to wait for your firstbatch to be ready. Starting a second batch one week into the first batch isalso a good idea, so by the time you finish the first batch the second will beready.

Here is a recipe for how to make sauerkraut, which is one of the leastexpensive, and healthiest foods in the world. It also is perhaps the mostpowerful in reversing hair loss.

    Timeframe: 1-4 weeks (or more)

Special Equipment: Ceramic crock or large glass bowl Plate that fits inside crock or bowl

  • One-gallon jug filled with water Cloth cover (like a pillowcase or towel)

Ingredients (for 1 gallon): 5 pounds cabbage 3 tablespoons sea salt

Process:1. Chop or grate cabbage, finely or coarsely, with or without hearts. You

can also use a food processor to make it go quicker. Place cabbage ina large bowl as you chop it.

    2. Sprinkle salt on the cabbage as you go. The salt pulls water out of thecabbage (through osmosis), and this creates the brine in which thecabbage can ferment and sour without rotting. The salt also has theeffect of keeping the cabbage crunchy, by inhibiting organisms andenzymes that soften it. 3 tablespoons of salt is a rough guideline for 5pounds of cabbage. You can actually just shake some on after youchop each cabbage.

    3. Add other vegetables. Grate carrots for a coleslaw-like kraut. Othervegetables you can add include onions, garlic, seaweed, greens,Brussels sprouts, small whole heads of cabbage, turnips, beets, andburdock roots. You can also add fruits (apples, whole or sliced, areclassic), and herbs and spices (caraway seeds, dill seeds, celeryseeds, and juniper berries are classic, but anything you like will work).Experiment.

    4. Mix ingredients together and pack into crock or bowl. Pack just a bitinto the crock at a time and tamp it down hard using your fists or any(other) sturdy kitchen implement. The tamping packs the kraut tightin the crock and helps force water out of the cabbage.

    5. Cover kraut with a plate or some other lid that fits snugly inside thecrock. Place a clean weight (a glass jug filled with water) on thecover. This weight is to force water out of the cabbage and then keepthe cabbage submerged under the brine. Cover the whole thing with acloth to keep dust and flies out.

    6. Press down on the weight to add pressure to the cabbage and helpforce water out of it. Continue doing this periodically (as often as you

  • think of it, every few hours), until the brine rises above the cover. This can take up to about 24 hours, as the salt draws water out of thecabbage slowly. Some cabbage, particularly if it is old, simply containsless water. If the brine does not rise above the plate level by the nextday, add enough salt water to bring the brine level above the plate.Add about a teaspoon of salt to a cup of water and stir until itscompletely dissolved.

    7. Leave the crock to ferment. Store it in an unobtrusive corner of thekitchen where you wont forget about it, but where it wont be inanybodys way. You could also store it in a cool basement if you wanta slower fermentation that will preserve for longer.

    8. Check the kraut every day or two. The volume reduces as thefermentation proceeds. Sometimes mold appears on the surface. Thisis completely normal. Skim what you can off of the surface; it willbreak up and you will probably not be able to remove all of it. Dontworry about this. Its just a surface phenomenon, a result of contactwith the air. The kraut itself is under the anaerobic protection of thebrine. Rinse off the plate and the weight. Taste the kraut. Generally itstarts to be tangy after a few days, and the taste gets stronger astime passes. In the cool temperatures of a cellar in winter, kraut cankeep improving for months and months. In the summer or in a heatedroom, its life cycle is more rapid. Eventually it becomes soft and theflavor turns less pleasant.

    9. Enjoy. Also, pay attention to the juice on the bottom. Sauerkraut juiceis an unparalleled digestive tonic. Each time you scoop some kraut outof the crock, you have to repack it carefully. Make sure the kraut ispacked tight in the crock, the surface is level, and the cover andweight are clean. Sometimes brine evaporates, so if the kraut is notsubmerged below brine just add salted water as necessary.

    10. Time your batches. Start a new batch before the previous batch runsout. It's good to remove the remaining kraut from the crock, repack itwith fresh salted cabbage, then pour the old kraut and its juices overthe new kraut. This gives the new batch a boost with an active culturestarter.

  • Kombucha: drink 4x per week

Kombucha is a type of probiotictea. It has been popular in othercountries for thousands of years, and is only now starting to gainpopularity in the US. It's made byadding a probiotic colony ofbacteria and yeast to green orblack tea and allowing it toferment.

Kombucha is a natural adaptogen which works on a broad spectrum ofphysiological imbalances, the result of which restores balance and supportsmany vital systems of the human body. Scientific research shows thebenefits of Kombucha, which has a high concentration of probiotic-rich acids, includes significant energy boosts, detoxification of the blood, and alleviationof a wide spectrum of ailments and conditions.

Documented research also demonstrates that that regular consumption ofKombucha tea invigorates the entire glandular system, thereby boostinginterferon production the effect of which is a regulaion of acid/alkaline levelsthat play so heavily into hair loss.

The specific mechanisms by which Kombucha works on the hair follicle andhair growth is still unknown. However, Allied Natural has received numerousreports of Kombucha having a positive effect on hair growth, and for thisreason we recommend a serving 4x per week. It can be found at any healthfood store or natural food store.

  • Flax Seeds: 4x per week

Flax seeds contain one of thegreatest nutirional profiles of anyother food on the planet. Ounce forounce, the amount of fiber, antioxidants, and omega-3s foundin flax seeds are greater than anyother food. It high in most Bvitamins, magnesium, andmanganese. In addition, it is the

single best source of lignans, which converts in the intestines intosubstances that balance female hormones. It is thought that these lignansare the main reason flax seeds have been shown to have positive effects onmen and women suffering from hair loss. Hormonal imbalances are a majorcontributing factor to hair loss, and diets high in flax seeds make it nearlyimpossible for your hormones to be imbalanced.

You can find flax seeds at any health food store. Organic flax seeds are best,as they're grown without harmful pesticides.

Recipe tip: Add flax seeds to yogurt with live active cultures for a tasty, crunchy, nutritious and hair stimulating power meal.

For best results, grind the flax seeds yourself, or buy them pre-ground.

  • Broccoli 4x per week

Ounce for ounce, broccoli packs themost nutritional punch than anyother vegetable. It includes vitaminC, vitamin A, folic acid, calcium, and fiber. It helps control highblood pressure, which can be atrigger for unknown stress. Broccoliis a cruciferous vegetable, meaningit naturally contains thephytochemicals indoles andisothiocyanates. You shouldremember isothiocynates from ourdiscussion on sauerkraut, and so itshould come as no surprise thebroccoli is technically in the cabbage family.

Broccoli, contains a specific isothiocynate called sulforaphane, whichincreases the activity of a certain group of enzymes in our body that destroycancer-causing agents. The interesting thing is that in order to activate thisgroup of enzymes, the sulforaphane actually alters the gene expression inrelated cells. This provides one theoretical explanation why broccoli is sooften reported as having a positive impact on hair loss.

Cooking tip: When preparing broccoli, it is best to steam it lightly, until itdevelops a dark, rich, green coloration. You'll know it when you see it.

However, it is the indole-3-carbinol that provides the most logicalexplanation why so many men and women report that regular consumptionof broccoli has helped them restore their hair loss. Indole-3-carbinol, found

  • almost exclusively in broccoli, deactivates a potent estrogen metabolitecalled 4-hydroxyesterone, shown to play a role in hair loss, whilesimultaneously increasing levels of 2-hydroxyesterone, which promoteshealthy follicles.

In addition, a single cup of broccoli contains 94mcg of folic acid, which isessential for proper cellular division because it is necessary in DNAsynthesis. Folic acid has also been shown, time and again, to play a veryimportant role in healthy hair growth, and many men and women sufferingfrom hair thinning or hair loss are actually deficient in folic acid.

Serving size tip: Two or three crowns per day, lightly steamed until theyturn a deep-green color, should be enough to see results, although eatingmore is always a good choice.

    Beets: 4x per week

Roman Gladiators are more beetsthan any other people in history, and they beleived their blood-redcolor was indicative of their power. The Romans also used beets tofight fever while the greeks atebeets to aid the blood.

Beets also contain the folic acidthat your body needs desperatelyto produce hair and maintainproper follicle size, but they also

contain phosphorous, magnesium, iron, potassium. It detoxifies the bloodand renews it with minerals. Beets also contain betaine, which stimulatesliver cells, protects the liver and bile ducts, and prevents cerebral arterydisease.

  • How to cook: simply chop off the purple "heads" of the beets, and boilthem in water for approximately 30 minutes for small beets and 45 minutesfor larger beets, or until soft.

But there is one trait of beets that is particularly interesting. Regularconsumption of beets can increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the bloodby over 400%. This is important, because recent studies have shown thathair follicles actually shrink when they are deprived of oxygen in the blood, and when supplied with enough oxygen-rich blood, they can resume their"normal" size.

We reccommend eating one beet four times per week, but one beet eachday is ideal.

    Raw Ginger 4x per week

Raw ginger has amazed us timeand again with the number of menand women who have reported onit's efficacy in combating their hairloss. Available at any grocerystore, raw ginger is essential in adiet to reverses hair loss. It hasmore than twelve types ofantioxidants, but it is the silica inginger, in its readily available, perfectly digestible form that is soimportant. Many men and women,

  • upon losing their hair, start taking a silica supplement only to find out that itdoesn't work. That is because you need to get the silica from a food source, not from a pill. Ginger is the best food-source for silica.

Ginger has been known to women for a long time for its ability to restoremenstrual regularity. It induces mensturation in the absence of menstruationin women of reproductive age, and promotes regularity in women withirregular periods. For many women who experience excruciating cramps, ginger alleviates the pain. For these reasons, it is known that gingerinteracts beneficially with hormones. This also gives us insight into why rawginger comes up again and again in the men and women we speak to whohave cured their hair loss.

The taste of raw ginger is somewhat spicy and can be an adjustment formany men and women. Keep a piece of ginger in the fridge, and cut a smallpiece of it to chew on once per day. Make sure you peel it. You only want thebright yellow flesh of the ginger on the inside, and not the outside skin.

If you can't stand the taste of chewing it: try chopping it up very finelyand adding it to a salad, such that you can barely taste it.

    Garlic: 4x per week

Garlic has been reported in variousfolklore to cure everything fromthe common cold to the plague.Garlic contains a powerfulcompound called allicin, whichlowers cholesterol (specifically thebad LDL cholesterol) andeliminates triglycerides. Excesstriglycerides in the blood plasmalead ot a condition known as

  • hypertriglyceridemia, which has been shown to have negative impact onfollicle size, and it is perhaps for this reason that Garlic has been reported bymany men and women to have positive effects on their hair loss.

Cooking Tip: Raw garlic is the best, try chopping a little but of it very fineand adding it to a sandwhich, salad, or other foods. Experiment!

For best results, incorporate at least one clove of garlic into your daily diet.

    Cilantro: 4x per week

Cilantro is of immense importancefor your diet if you areexperiencing hair loss. It is anamazing herb with a highconcentration of essential oils andone secret weapon: Cilantroactually removes heavy metalsfrom your system. However, beforewe continue to discuss Cilantro, how to cook it, and how it works on the body, we need to understand heavymetals in our body, what they are, how they got there, and what they do toour hair.

    Heavy Metal Briefing

  • Now we know what you're probably thinking. "Heavy metals? In my system? Not likely." Think again. The average men and women today, on average, has significantly higher concentrations of heavy metals in the body VS. 50 to100 years ago. The main culprits causing hair loss are mercury primarily, and lead secondarily.

    Mercury:

Mercury embodies all of thenegative consequences we are nowexperiencing from the industrialrevolution. This chemical, which isubiquitous in manufacturingeverything from our cars to ourfood, is one of the most toxicsubstances to human on earth.Sources of mercury buildup in thebody have been linked to a numberof sources. Fish is a major sourceof mercury in humans, with Tunahaving an incredibly high amountof mercury present, along withshark, swordfish, and marlin. Lobsters, Cod, Bass, and Halibut all have highlevels of mercury as well.

Another major source of mercury is "silver" dental fillings which arecomprised of approximately 50% mercury. The mercury vapor from theseamalgam fillings is lipid soluble and passes readily through cell membranesand across the blood brain barrier. The mercury escapes continually duringthe entiring life of the filling, and it's release is stimulated further bychewing, brushing, and hot fluids.

Mercury, in trace amounts, is also found in nearly all foods that contain high

  • fructose corn syrup. That is because high fructose corn syrup is made usinga process called "mercury immersion" that immerses the entire batch of cornsyrup in Mercury. Of course, you would never know any of this if you simplywatched this commercial put out by the corn syrup industry.

The effects of mercury increase with the amount present in our body, whichincreases every time we eat tuna fish, get a silver filling, or eat somethingwith corn syrup in it. Specifically, mercury can cause a metallic taste in themouth, excess salivation, gingivitis, tremors, stomach and kidney troubles, and of course, hair loss. Mental symptoms include shyness, irritability, apathy and depression, psychosis, mental deterioration, and anorexia.

And of course, mercury in the body has been shown to play a direct role inhair loss.

    Lead:

Lead can get into our system from a number of sources. Drinking water canbe contaminated, fish can be contaminated, or even if you run your handover something painted with lead paint, and then eat without washing yourhands. Lead is much tougher to avoid than mercury, usually because wedon't know we're ingesting it. Mercury, on the other hand, is avoided simplybe cutting most fish and processed foods out of your diet, and perhapsreplacing any "silver" fillings.

Lead in the body can cause combinations of gastrointestinal problems, hairloss, hypertension, fatigue, hemolytic anemia, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, weight loss, peripheral neuropathy, cognitive dysfunction, arthralgias, headache, weakness, convulsions, irritability, impotence, loss oflibido, depression, depression of thyroid function (known to play a role inhair loss) loss of adrenal function (also plays a role in hair loss), chronicrenal failure, and gout. Mental symptoms include restlessness, insomnia, irritability, confusion, excitement, anxiety, delusions, and disturbing dreams.

  • Back to Cilantro

So now that we know where the heavy metals are coming from (particularlymercury), we should be doing all we can to avoid them. We'll get into this ingreater detail in the "Foods that Cause Hair Loss" section, but for now let'stalk about Cilantro.

Cilantro has the amazing ability to remove heavy metals from the body. Thisis good news, considering that exposure to heavy metals is simply part ofindustrialized life. In fact, it is already being used in clinical settingstoremove heavy metals directly from the spinal cord.

For this reason, Cilantro should be incorporated into the diet on a dailybasis. But beware! You must use fresh cilantro to experience the benefits, asthe dried form available in spice bottles, does not have the same propertiesand abilities.

So get a fresh bunch of cilantro from your local grocery store every 2 daysor so, and chop it up, put it in salads, cook with it, put it on sandwhiches, and do whatever you have to do to get this daily.

Serving size tip: you don't need to get a lot of cilantro, just a little bit eachday. Again, try chopping it very finely and adding it to salads or sandwichessuch that you can't taste it.

Recipe: Cilantro Pesto to give your locks a fabulous treat

1 Bunch fresh organic cilantro1 cup extra virgin olive oil1 tablespoon cod liver oil w/lemon1/2 cup roasted pine nutsjuice of 1 lemon (or 2 meyer lemons if you want to get fancy)3 table spoons avocado

  • 2 cloves garlic peeled and mashed1/4 teaspoon tumericsea salt and ground green pepper

add all ingredients to a blender or food processor and puree until texture iscreamy and flavor only has hint of bitter after taste. This sauce is deliciouswith virtually anything from meats like turkey and steak to sprouted pastaand toast or even drizzled over cut up apples!

Many men and women like to keep a jar of cilantro pesto in theirrefridgerator so they can get their daily serving of cilantro quickly and easily.

    Green Tea

No other drink on the face of theearth is reported to have as manyhealth benefits asGreen Tea. The Chinese have usedit for thousands of years to treateverything from headaches todepression. Consider one studydone by the National CancerInstitute in 1994 that found thatdrinking Green Tea daily cut the risk of esophogeal cancer in Chinese menand men and women by nearly 60%. And researchers at the University ofPurdue found that a compound found in Green tea inhibits cancer growth.

Perhaps most of the secret of green tea is the abundance of catechinpolyphenols, most notably epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG. EGCG is one ofthe most powerful anti-oxidants known to science, and in addition toinhibiting cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It

  • also has been shown to lower levels of bad cholesterol or LDL, and inhibitabnormal formation of blood clots.

This all may provide a window into why Green Tea is so effective for hairloss, but it is only that. Until more studies are done, we will not knowconclusively what it is about green tea that causes so many men and womento swear by it, that it was such an effective part of their hair loss dietregimen.

    Organic Green Drink

Allied Natural recommends that all men andwomen undergoing our program start eachday with a green drink while taking theirStimulair Oral Supplement. This is notnecessary, but it is recommended. Thereare plenty of great green drinks out there, justmake sure you select one that has all organicingredients.

The concept of a green drink is to combine anumber of powerful and incredibly healthygreens into a powder that you can add towater and juice. This won't be as good aseating the actual fresh vegetable, but it's aclose second. And let's face it, in terms ofpracticality, it's a lot easier to add a scoop ofgreen drink to a glass of orange juice in themorning that to cook come broccoli, beets, kelp, and 26 other greens!

One of our favorites is Amazing Grass Green Superfood. You'll find that itcontains many of the vegetables we recommend in this report. However, agreen drink is not a substitute for these vegetables. Even if you take our

    Nuts

  • Eating various nuts on a regularbasis is of critical importance ingrowing your hair back. All types ofnuts, including peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, cashews and so on are includedhere.

A Harvard study, published inSeptember 2006 in Longevity, found that men and women whoate at 142g of nuts per week ormore were 35% less likely to havea heart attack than those who ate

less than 28g a month. Nuts are rich in protein, fiber, monounsaturated fats, nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Walnuts are a staple nut, more important than nearly any other nut, because they have high levels of omega-3s, whereas other nuts do not.Omega-3s are very important to your body's hair growth, and your hairfollicles simply cannot function properly without adequate amounts ofomega-3s in the body.

Brazil Nuts come up surprisingly often with men and women who haveovercome their hair loss. A recent study done by the University of Illinoisshowed that Brazil nuts play a vital role in preventing breast cancer, due tothe high amounts of selenium they also contain. Selenium is a powerfulantioxidant that helps neutralise harmful free radicals that can attackhealthy cells and increase the risk of serious conditions like heart diseaseand cancer including breast cancer as already mentioned, and lung, boweland prostate cancer. Selenium also plays a role in hair growth and follicleregulation, whereas deficiencies in selenium can be a single cause of hairloss. The hair typically will not return until the body is given adequateamounts of selenium from fresh food sources.

Cashews are another nut that comes up again and again. They contain a

  • great source of iron, which is essential for the functioning of blood cells andenzyme activity, magnesium which we've talked about earlier and how itrelates to hair growth, phosphorous which is also important, and zinc alongwith more selenium.

The best advice for incorporating nuts into your diet with the goal of fightinghair loss is to vary the nuts as much as possible. What we tell men andwomen to do is to buy a package of all different nuts, including the heavyhitters like Brazil Nuts, Cashews, and Walnuts, and mix them with as manyother nuts as they like, including pecans, peanues, hazelnuts, and almonds.Mix all the nuts together in a big tupperware contained and keep it sealed inthe cupboard. Then, simply be sure to get a handful or two in per day andyou will be well on your way to growing your hair back.

Another preferred way to eat nuts is with flax seeds in yogurt or in a salad.Have fun and don't be afraid to experiment a little. Different methods workfor different people, but the important thing is that you get the nuts intoyour daily diet some how, in whatever way works for your personally.

    Lemon in Water

Lemons are so common that wehardly ever stop to think about them, let alone consider them one of themost important nutritionalsupplements we can take whenfighting hair loss. In ancient Rome, lemons were used to cure variouspoisons. When mixed with warmwater, lemon juice can kill worminfestations (even if you wereunaware you had parasites), nausea, heartburn, and intestinal disorders.

  • When taken once per day in the morning, which is our recommendation, lemon water acts as a restoring tonic to the liver and stimulates bileproduction which makes it ready to digest your meals for the day. It can alsodissolve gallstones. Also, due to its vitamin C content, it can treat manyinfections, hasten the healing process for wounds, and releive a high fever. It has also shown efficacy in treating asthma, sore throats, and tonsillitis.

Lemon is also a diuretic. This means it is good for people with urinary tractinfections and high uric acid problems, such as those with arthritis orrheumatism because it helps flush out all the toxins and bad bacteria. Whenlemon is mixed with coffee, it is thought to help treat malaria. Thisconcoction is also effective for headaches.

However, it is lemon's effectiveness in treating hair loss that we areprimarily interested in. The men and women who have reported this ashelping all share one thing in common: they all drank at least one glass oflemon water daily, and they did it for a month before they noticed theeffects. Keep in mind it is impossible to change your body chemistryovernight, and adding many of these foods to your diet, especially if yourarely consumed them before, is a process the benefits of which take time.

When making a glass of lemon water that will have the desired therapeuticeffect, squeeze half of a lemon into a full glass of water. Because you willget two glasses of lemon water per lemon, and you need to drink one glassdaily, you will go through approximately 15 lemons per month.

Here's a tip. Whenever you go to a restaurant or eat out, instead of orderingany alcoholic drink or soda, order simply a water with lemon. Mostrestaurants will gladly accomodate, and it is the healthiest beverage you candrink (unless they have Kombucha!).

  • EGGS: 4X Per Week

One of the most unfortunateeliminations you can make in yourdiet that actually contributes tohair loss is tossing the egg yolk. Itis important to eat whole eggs, especially yokes. Like mostcholesteral rich foods they are jampacked with almost all of the fatsoluable vitamins and essentialfatty acids. When it comes to hair loss, the egg yoke is an even betterinsurance plan than multivitamins as its unique and natural composition ofvitamins provides a sturdy environment to stimulate hair follicles and notonly promote hair growth, but promote healthy, elastic, shiny hair.

One of the reasons there is such a hair loss issue in the United States is ourdeficiencies in vitamins A, E, B6, and copper, iron and folate. One egg (andin particular, their yokes) provide about 1/3 of these vitamins and mineralsso consuming about 2-3 per day would cover the entire deficiency.

Pastured eggs, meaning eggs from chickens that are free to forage for grassand insects, are of much higher nutritional quality than eggs fromconfinement chickens. The marginal increase in value, of course, is foundmostly in the yolk.

Insects provide a higher DHA content, found exclusive in the yolk, and grassprovides a higher vitamin E and carotene content, also found exclusively inthe yolk. Both DHA and vitamin E are integral nutrients for promotinghealthy hair growth. Egg yolks from pastured chickens are a powerfulsupplement to a healthy head of hair a super-food providing necessarynutrients in which the Standard American Diet is deficient.

  • You may be able to find roadside stands in your area that sell eggs frompastured chickens. Be sure to inquire about the farming practices, to makesure that the chickens are able to forage for both grass and insects.

    Apples

Pectin is a natural fiber found in many fruits with apples being the richestsource of pectin among all thefruits. Recent studies haverevealed many health benefits fromconsumption of pectin. Of note arestudies that show Pectin reduceshigh blood pressure. High bloodpressure causes stress in the bodywhich acts as an anti-nutrientrobbing your body's ability to produce and hold on to healthy hair. Weshould do everything we can to maintain a steady blood pressure. Applesare certainly a delectable way to reduce stress. Other studies regarding thebenefits of pectin consumption show that it:Acts as an antioxidant against the bad cholesterol in the blood stream,Decreases the chances of colon cancer, Works well as an anti-diarrheaagent, Is effective in the regression, or prevention of, gallstones.

There are many studies revealing the success of an active compound inapples, procyanidin B-2. This compound is found in some other fruits likeblueberries, but apples provide the strongest effects on hair growth. Thestudies show about a 300% regeneration of hair growth compared to peoplewho do nothing about their hair loss worries.

Apples and Eggs: Try this scalp stimulating recipe!

Once your focus on healthier hair and healthier lifestyle is habit, you maybe amazed at the deliciously creative recipes you come up with. One of our

  • clients was simply trying to use all of the unused food in her kitchen tothrow together an exceptionally healthy breakfast. She started heating upsome:

apples from the local farmer's market in a cast iron skillet threw in some coconut butter (which provides an often neglected fat

in so many diets-lauric acid) generous amounts of cinnamon nutmeg 2 whole eggs

She scrambled everything together. It was so enjoyable and healthy thatshe ate it every morning for 2 weeks! In those 2 weeks, Michella's baldspots were shading in like never before. She found a delicious way toinclude generous doses of antioxidants, flavinoids, phytochemicals, andalmost countless nutrients into his everyday diet.

    Oranges

Vitamin C is a healthy hair elixirand the only way you should begetting your vitamin C is from anatural food concentrate includingminerals, rutin and other analogs. It should not be consumed assingle isolated factory-producedpills. Vitamin C is water-solublebest known for its use in treatingthe common cold though it is alsoneeded for processes includingtissue growth and repair, strengthening of capillary walls,

lactation and adrenal gland function. it is vital for the formation of collagen,

  • the body's structural substance. Oranges are famous for their vitamin Ccontent. But, they also contain calcium and potassium. This may come as asuprise and counter-intuitive to common practice, that the interior whitemembrane is an excellent source of bioflavenoids which are essential to thehealth of blood capillaries.

This is how it relates ladies: the portion of the hair that we can see is calledthe shaft. Each shaft of hair protrudes from its follicle, which is a tube-likepouch just below the surface of the skin. The hair is attached to the base ofthe follicle by the hair root, which is where the hair actually grows andwhere it is nourished by blood capillaries. Without proper health in the bloodcapillaries, your hair can not be nourished. Like the rest of the body, hairsare made of cells. As new cells form at its root, the hair is gradually pushedfurther and further out of the follicle. The cells at the base of each hair areclose to the blood capillaries, and are living so it is imperative to hair healththat the blood capillaries are well maintained.

Organic oranges are a must, as some factory farm oranges have been foundto contain no vitamin C whatsoever!

    Tomatoes: 1-2X per week

Tomatoes are another incredible source of vitamin C. Its added theraputic

  • benefits come from a carotenoidcalled lycopene, an organicpigment of great value inpreventing and protecting againstcancer and appendicitis. Onedelicious way to consume tomatoesis from truly fermented ketchup, not bought commercializedketchup. The main ingredient inthe one-half billion bottles ofketchup Americans consume everyyear contain high fructose cornsyrup as its chief ingredient.

Home Made Ketchup: Try this recipe!

3 cups canned tomato paste 1/4 cup whey 1 tablespoon sea salt 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 3 cloves garlic, peeled and mashed 1/2 cup fish sauce

mix all ingredients until well blended. Place in a quart-sized, wide-mouthmason jar. The top of the ketchup should be at least 1 inch below the top ofthe jar. Leave at room temperature for about 2 days then transfer torefrigerator.

  • Olive Oil

In many parts of the world, a highfat intake is associated withdegenerative diseases such asatherosclerosis, diabetes, asthma, colon cancer, and arthritis. Muchof this degeneration is paired withhair loss in its early stages. But insome parts of the world, a high fatintake is actually associated withlower rates of these conditions. Acloser look at the foods eaten inthese places reveals that the highfat intake is actually due to thegenerous use of olive oil.Comparing these areas, such as theMediterranean, where olive oil isthe main fat used, to other regions, like the United States, where otherfats such as animal fats, hydrogenated fats and vegetable oils like corn oildominate, turns up some very interesting data. It turns out that people whouse olive oil regularly, especially in place of other fats, have much healthierhair production lower rates of heart disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, coloncancer, and asthma.

Olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil, provides a number of heart-healthy benefits-increasing HDL "good" cholesterol, improving the ratio ofLDL:HDL, and, if you aren't already including olive oil in your diet, may loweryour systolic blood pressure as well. But don't overdo it. Consuming morethan a couple of tablespoons at a meal can increase free radical damage ofcholesterol.

  • Researchers found that men with vertex pattern balding, or balding on thetop of the head, appeared to be a marker for increased coronary heartdisease. This association was even greater for men with hypertension orelevated cholesterol levels.

    Fish Oil

EPA and DHA are the two most crucial oils to include inyour hair growth diet. Fish oil is a particularlyprotective element not only for your nervous system, brain, and better eye sight, but also to keep thosehairs locked into place once they grow back. Thisbenefit is one of the more recent discoveries by AlliedNatural.

Keep in mind that fish oil is highly concentrated inessential fatty acid Omega-3. Since most of ourtypical diet is over concentrated in omega-6 fatty acidsfrom an overuse of vegetable oils, taking fish oil willcreate an effective balance in your body. This beingsaid, once you are following Hair Growth Secrets, it isextremely important to not over use fish oils and

balance them with foods that provide omega-6 essential fatty acids as well. One teaspoon per day will give you tremendous amounts of vitamin A (whichis the number one important vitamin for absorbing all other fat soluablevitamins) along with DHA and EPA.

A case study published in 2007 (Bays, HE. Safety considerations with omega-3 fatty acid

  • therapy. American Journal of Cardiology, Vol. 99, No. 6A, March 19, 2007, pp. 35C-43C)recommends these brands of fish oils:

Carlson Coromega Metagenics Nordic Naturals Kirkland Puritan Pride

which show no trace of mercury in their product.

Just remember, always get a bottle of fish oil and take it by the tea-spoon.Avoid the capsules at all costs.

    Important Spices

Turmeric: Used to aid in hair lossrecovery, this derivative of theginger family stimulates growth atits beginning stages. Curcuminmainly found in turmeric enhancesthe production of brain derivedneurotrophic or BDNF, whichsupports nerve growth in the hairfollicles.

Cayenne: Use sparingly onstressful days. Cayenne is used to reduce cardiovascular stressesthat lead to hair loss. When your heart strings are being tested bythe day to day tests, add a teaspoon to your lemon water, eggs orsalmon and avoid losing your locks.

  • Cinnamon: Insulin stability is an important aid to hair growth.Cinnamon has a natural ability to stimulate insulin and lower bloodsugar without damaging the pancreas and without consuming sugar, which spikes insulin levels. Cinnamon is truly one of the world'shealthiest foods. Read this article and you'll be amazed with all of theadded benefits cinnamon will do once you are satisfied with its hairgrowth stimulation.

    Whole Grains and Sprouted Grains

The less dramatic a food stimulates insulin levels, the better. Peaks andcrashes in insulin levels have beencorrelated with hair loss especially fordiabetics. Whole grains and sproutedgrains are an imperative substitute for thewhite, refined flours used in so much of ourfood.

The way sprouted grains work: your bodydigests them as if they are vegetables. Vitamins B, C, beta-carotine andprotein content are all increased when grains are sprouted. The proccessalso allows the body to absorb more calcium, magnesium, iron, copper andzinc. This natural living environment for grains (opposed to processing) hasa minimal effect on insulin levels. Once you get a hold on your insulinlevels, your hair loss will improve noticeably!

Food for Life has so many delicious products. You'll never feel stinted onbread products and after incorporating them into your diet and getting ridof refined flours and sugars, you'll feel more satisfied using sproutedgrains.

Getting rid of refined sugars is an integral part of stimulating hair regrowth,

  • but it is one of the most difficult things to do. Including sprouted grains inyour diet is only one way to get rid of refined sugars.

    Foods That Cause Hair Loss

Now that we've gone over all the foods that you should be eating daily, nowcomes the hard part: cutting out of your diet, completely, the foods thatcould be causing your hair loss.

You may be shocked and surprised to discover the foods that are likelycausing your hair loss, and you may naturally meet this information with ahealthy amount of disbelief. But trust us, for each food listed in this sectionis detailed here only after receiving case after case in which men and womenhave reversed their hair loss by cutting these things our of their dietentirely.

The importance that lies in your complete abandonment of all the foodslisted below for the success of your hair regrowth is paramount. If youcannot bring yourself to give these things up, the chances of your hairgrowing back is cut quite considerably.

Our advice for this step of the program is to simply read and process whatwe have to say, and afterwards reflect on the information and contemplateways in which you can help yourself more easily give these things up.

    Refined Sugars

  • A woman's ability to control her insulin levels is prerequisite to hair growthand sustainability. When insulin levels areconstantly peaking and crashing, your bodyundergoes tremendous stress leading toexhaustion, irritability and not only an impotenceto absorbing nutrients, but a response that robsyour body of nutrients stored to keep all of yourfunctions operating, namely, hair growth.

Refined sugar's number one drawback is that itincreases and spikes insulin levels which in turn inhibits the release ofgrowth hormones which causes not only hair loss, but severely decreasedimmunity. Woman who have gotten a solid handle on deleting refined sugarconsumption are the superstars of Allied Natural. The hair growth rate ofthese men and women is exponential within the first two to three weeks ofcompletely eliminating refined sugars. Many of these men and womenvolunteer to counsel new clients to find healthy sugar substitutes (whichdoes not mean "diet" products) and give the support you need to keep yourquest for healthy hair a priority over using sugar.

Sugar so severely interrupts hair growth and causes hair loss largelybecause of its contribution to the parasite condition in all human beings:candida. The job of candida albicans is to recognize and destroy harmfulbacteria: Without it, we would be defenseless against many pathogenicbacteria. In a healthy person, Candida albicans numbers in the millions andis controlled by a properly-functioning immune system and "friendly"bacteria. However, if the number of friendly bacteria is decreased, theimmune system is weakened, or other conditions for yeast proliferationoccur (diet containing sugar, improper pH in the digestive system) Candidaalbicans will shift from yeast form to mycelial fungal form and start to invadethe body.

In the yeast state, Candida is a non-invasive, sugar-fermenting organism, while in fungal state which is fed by refined sugar and sometimes naturalsugars it is invasive and can produce rhizoids, very long root-like structures.

  • Rhizoids can penetrate mucosa or intestinal walls, leaving microscopic holessimilar to cavities in your teeth and allowing toxins, undigested foodparticles, bacteria and yeast to enter the bloodstream. This condition isknown as Leaky Gut Syndrome. Listen to this: candida overgrowth convertsany testosterone in your body (and yes ladies, you do have testosterone inyour body) into its derivative DHT, whose direct consequence is major hairloss.

    High Fructose Corn Syrup

If we had a nickel for every womanwe've talked to who simply cuthigh fructose corn syrup out of herdiet and subsequently grew herhair back, we'd be rich.

At first, it is quite easy to see whyHFCS could possibly be such anaggregious violator to men andwomen's hair. A study as recent as early 2009 found that nearly half of allhigh fructose corn syrup in common foods contained mercury. You can readthe report here.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is produced in a way that contaminates it withmercury, and there are two ways in which this can happen. The first is thecaustic soda used to produce high fructose corn syrup is often made inplants that rely on mercury in the process, thus contaminating the causticsoda with mercury before it is used to make the High Fructose Corn Syrup.Secondly, the Mercury Cell technology that is commonly used in the processof creating High Fructose Corn Syrup.

  • But now a third reason has cometo our attention why cutting outany product with High FructoseCorn Syrup is such a powerfulweapon in the fight against hairloss. Typically, foods that containhigh fructose corn syrup alsocontain a number of othersuspected substances thatcontribute to hair loss. Commonsubstances found in foods thatcontain HFCS include sodiumbenzoate, sodium aluminumphosphate, sodium acidpyrophosphate, calcium propionate, glycerin, soy lecithin, and xanthan gum.By eliminating all foods with high fructose corn syrup, you are alsoeliminating all foods with these other questionable substances. It is for thisreason that we surmise the eliniation of high fructose corn syrup, entirelyand immediately from the diet, is such a time tested effective method forgrowing your hair back.

Let's take a moment to really come to an understanding of what it means toeliminate all high fructose corn syrup from the diet. This includes nearlyevery single product that is "mass manufactured" by giants such as cocacola, pepsi, nabisco, kraft, and others. It includes nearly all sodas, all junkfood, all grocery-store bought bakery goods, all Heinz ketchup, McDonalds,Burger King and Wendy's hamburger buns, many types of ice cream, cereals, juice boxes, anything made by Kellogg's, candy bars, pop tarts, nutrigrain bars, many sauces, and even some soups.

  • The contamination of our foodsupply with high fructose cornsyrup, and thus toxic mercury, isso widespread that the utmost ofdiligence is required to effectivelyavoid the toxin. Yes, many moremen and women are suffering fromhair loss today VS. 100 years agoand yes, this is unquestionably oneof the main reasons.

The black line on the graph to theright illustrates the averagenumber of pounds of high fructosecorn syrup consumed by Americanseach year. As recently as 1976, itwas less than ten pounds. By theyear 2000, it was over 60 pounds. Current estimates assert that in the year2009, the average American will consume over 100 pounds of high fructosecorn syrup. Just imagine how much mercury is in all that corn syrup.

Gone are the days where you will buy foods without reading the ingredientslabel. If you truly want to grow your hair back, you can no longer purchasegoods made with HFCS.

    Tuna Fish

  • We've already spent a bit of timetalking about Tuna in our sectionon Mercury, so we won't get into itto much, except to summarizewhat we already know. Tunacontains high amounts of Mercury.Mercury in the body wreaks havocon your hair follicles and skewsyour hormonal profile.

Along with Tuna, all other large fish should be avoided, included shark, marlin, bass, cod, halibut, lobster, and salmon unless it is wild caughtalaskan salmon. Small fish and shellfish, like shrimp, crabs, and sardines areOK.

It may come in a small can, but the Tuna is a very large fish. As such, it'slevels of mercury are among the highest in the ocean.

    Sushi

For the same reasons that Tuna is on this list, we must also add Sushi to thelist. In 2008, a New York Times investigation found that levels of mercury inSushi available at Sushi restaurants in New York City were grossly over thelimit allowed by law, and even that limit has come under fire for being toohigh.

  • copyright New York Times

  • Thus, it would be silly to cut Tuna and High Fructose Corn Syrup from thediet, in an effort to avoid mercury, and continue to eat Sushi. For somepeople this will probably be easy, while others who are Sushi fans may findthis more difficult.

Milk / Yogurt / Cheese with rBST

rBST stands for Recombinant BovineSomatotropin. It is banned in Australia, NewZealand, Europe and Canada. In America, however, it is certain that rBST has been used onthe cows that made your milk/yogurt/cheeseunless specifically otherwise stated on the milkcarton.

The controversy over rBST goes back years. Itwas first developed by Monsanto through the use of a genetically engineeredstrain of E-Coli. Monsanto is a well known corporation that geneticallyengineers crops, animals, and hormones. Monsanto currently controls 90%of the corn and 80% of the soy grown in America, crops which are all grownwith their genetically modified seeds.

In 1994 Monsanto developed rBST under the trade name Posilac. Thehormone, which is injected directly into the dairy cow, prevents the death ofmammary cells. However there were unintended consequences.

Injecting cows with the rBST hormone increased the risk of the cowdeveloping mastitis, or infection of the uddeer, by 25%. With an infectedudder, cows would pass puss through the milk and into our glasses. Thecondition was also excruciatingly painful for the cow.

The FDA, which is currently run by former employees of Monsanto (includingMichael Taylor, Margaret Miller, and Suzan Senchen), has labeled rBST as

  • safe. When a small group of farmers decided to produce hormone free milk, and label their cartons as rBST free, Monsanto sued them for "falseadvertising." Thankfully, farmers are still allowed to print on the carton thefact that their milk is free from added hormones, or "rBST FREE" but it isalways accompanied with an asterik * that says rBST is completely safe.

To this day, rBST is still banned in europe and abroad due to the fact that itcauses cancer. However, a number of men and women have reported to usthat they suspect it caused their hair loss, because they they stoppeddrinking milk altogether, or switched to a milk made from cows not treatedwith rBST, their hair started growing back. This is just another example ofhow our diet is so important to our health and our appearance, and must becarefully safeguarded.

    Meats processed with Sodium Nitrite

Any meats that are processed withSodium Nitrite should be avoidedat all costs.

Sodium nitrite is commonly usedas a corrosion inhibitor for metals,a reagent in laboratories, thetextile industry uses it to bleachfibers, manufacturers use it tomake rubber, and the food industry uses it to cure bacon. Which one ofthose just doesn't belong?

In fact, if you look at the ingredients in bacon, or pepperoni, or anythingmade by oscar meyer, or most hot dogs, you will find Sodium Nitrite staringback at you from the label, usually unless it otherwise states "Contains no

  • sodium Nitrite".

"This would be at the top of my list of additives to cut from my diet," saysChristine Gerbstadt, M.D., M.P.H., R.D., L.D.N., a spokesperson for theAmerican Dietetic Association. "Under certain high-temperature cookingconditions such as grilling, it transforms into a reactive compound that hasbeen shown to promote cancer.

Sodium Nitrite also causes intense migraines in some people, and there is noquestion that it simultaneously wreaks havoc on your hormones whiledramatically shifting your body chemistry. And it is a fact that a dose of just2 grams of sodium Nitrite will kill you. But it is the effects that it has onmen and women's hair that is particular concern to us.

To date, we have received over 100 testimonials from men and women whoclaim that eliminating all sodium nitrite from their diet had a positive effecton their fight against hair loss. Very often, this method is combined with alot of other dietary principals covered here, so it is sometimes difficult toisolate out what has the greatest effect, but time and again we come back tosodium nitrite as being a major causative factor in hair loss, such that whenit is removed from the diet, the hair grows back. It is second only to highfructose corn syrup.

    Alcohol

  • It's never easy to tell men and women, especially young men and women, thatalcohol may be causing their hair loss.Alcohol is such a part of our culture, such an icon of our weekends, that tolive without alcohol can seem almostimpossible. It can seem more difficultthat giving up high fructose corn syrup.

However, on behalf of everyone atAllied Natural, we must implore you. Ifyou are experiencing hair thinning orhair loss, you must give up alcohol immediately. At least do so until yourhair is returning to normal, and then you can slowly add back alcohol in acontrolled way to see if it has any detrimental effects.

The fact of the matter is that you could be one of thousands of men andwomen suffering from a slight allergy to alcohol that has gone virtuallyunreported in all major scientific literature. But then again, sometimes thebest information comes straight from the mouths of people who experienceit first hand. And what we've seen again and again is men and women whohave started growing their hair back, only after giving up alcohol.

Here is a quick reference chart on how alcohol effects the body. The oldaxiom, "where there's smoke, there's a fire," really holds true here. Theseare just some of the effects of alcohol, but it paints a very clear picture ofjust how destructive alcohol can be to all the systems of your body, includingyour hair which is very sensitive and relies on a delicate hormonal balance.

Arthritis Increases risk of gouty arthritis

CancerIncreases the risk of cancer in the liver, pancreas, rectum, breast, mouth, pharynx, larynx and esophagus

    Fetal AlcoholSyndrome

Causes physical and behavioral abnormalities in thefetus

  • Heart DiseaseRaises blood pressure, blood lipids and the risk of strokeand heart disease in heavy drinkers. Heart disease isgenerally lower in light to moderate drinkers.

    Hyperglycermia Raises blood glucose

HypoglycemiaLowers blood glucose, especially for people withdiabetes

Kidney DiseaseEnlarges the kidneys, alters hormone functions, andincreases the risk of kidney failure

Liver Disease Causes fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis

    Malnutrition

Increases the risk of protein-energy malnutrition,; lowintakes of protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C,thiamine, vitamin B6 and riboflavin, and impairedabsorption of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D and zinc.

    NervousDisorders

Causes neuropathy and dementia; impairs balance andmemory

ObesityIncreases energy intake, but not a primary cause ofobesity

    Psychologicaldisturbances

    Causes depression, anxiety and insomnia

And then there is the fact that most men and women tend to drink cocktailsor "mixed drinks", which are often mixed with soda, which contains highfructose corn syrup, and thus would also be contrary to our principals of hairregrowth.

So, for the best results, please give up alcohol at least until your hairreturns, and then, as we mentioned earlier, you can try adding it back inslowly, once you can make sure that it won't make you lose your hair again.

  • Aspartame / Splenda / Nutrisweet /

Aspartame is the "fake sugar"present in all diet sodas and "sugarfree" products. It is, without adoubt, the most toxic substance onthe market currently being sold toconsumers. Over one millionpeople in the US report sufferingfrom seizures after ingesting it.

There have been so many studiesand so many findings on the wide-reaching toxic effects of aspartame that itis an absolute tragedy it is still on the market.

IF you would like to read hundreds of real testimonials from people whohave experienced every health-related symptom you can imagine, all inconnection to the aspartame found in diet sodas and other products, visitthis web page. There are also countless testimonials documented here ofmen and women whose hair has fallen out due to consumption ofaspartame. And this of course is in addition to all the countless men andwomen we've talked to, a number that easily reaches into the hundreds, about the adverse effects of aspartame on their hair.

A further problem with aspartame is that it converts to formaldehyde in thebody, which can eventually lead to chronic formaldehyde poisoning, whichcan also cause hair loss.

Please note that if your hair loss is due to aspartame, is can take as long as60 days without consuming any aspartame before symptoms start toimprove.

  • Lifestyle Changes

    Cell phones

Unbeknownst to most consumers, and most men and women suffering fromhair loss, there is a growing body of scientific evidence that supports theconclusion that our cell phones -and more specifically holding our cellphones next to our heads- is damaging our health, our dna, and even ourhair follicles. This is because of the simple fact that cell phones emitradiation.

Observe the diagram to the left. Itillustrates the absorption pattern for theaverage cell phone by the human head. Asyou can see, the region colored brightyellow and red receive the most radiation, while the purple and blue regions receiveslightly less radiation.

This is occurring every time you use yourcell phone.

Now your first thought might be that if cellphone usage is so bad for you, or nearly as

bad as we're claiming, that they would be illegal. Consider the case of thecigarette industry. The Cigarette companies knew for decades that cigaretteswere obscenely toxic to the human body. But they kept the evidence lockedup and kept selling billions of dollars worth of cigarettes. Then, wheneveryone found out, they simply had to pay out a couple lawsuits and put awarning label on the pack.

  • Now we are seeing the same thing happening with cell phones, and notsurprisingly, the first casualty seems to be hair, along with the hair follicle. Not surprisingly, brains surgeons are the first to become aware of cell phonedamage to the brain and surrounding region, and thus it is rare to find abrain surgeon that holds a cell phone next to his head.

The good news is it's not too late, even if you've been using a cell phonenext to your ear for ten years. Here's what you have to do:

1.) Immediately discontinue using your cell phone next to your ear. Use it onspeaker while holding it away from your head, or use a headset. When youabsolutely must hold it next to your head, holding it away from your ear byjust an inch or two can drastically reduce the radiation your hair follicles areabsorbing.

2.) Make sure you are following our nutritional guidelines outlined in the firstsection of this book. Once you stop radiating your hair follicles with your cellphone, you'll need to supply them with the proper nutrients to regenerateand begin working properly. The good news is the human body is incrediblyversed in regenerating itself. However, the radiatation emitted by cellphones shrink your hair follicles and contribute significantly to hair loss.

We have had many men and women talk to us about cell phones and how itrelates to their hair loss. Many men and women report that discontinuing theuse of their cell phone next to their ear simply halted their hair loss, but thedamage was already done. Still others, who have followed our nutritionalguidelines, have been able to make an almost-complete recovery of theirhair.

The only indicator seems to be length of time using a cell phone and age.men and women who have only been using a cell phone for 5 years aretwice as likely to recover their hair as men and women who have been usingone for 10 years, and men and women who are 70 are less likely to recovertheir hair as men and women who are 40.

  • Non-Stick Frying PansIt is now common knowledge thatnonstick frying pans, coated withTeflon which is patented by Dupont, release toxic particles when heated tohigh temperatures. Among the mosttoxic is PFOA, which causes hair lossand hair thinning. PFOA is one of thecritical ingredients in themanufacturing process of Teflon.

Because of the toxicity of these pans,Dupont has agreed to take PFOA, andTeflon with it, off the market by 2015.This gentleman explains it well.

And as the Washington Post points out, this chemical causes cancer, birthdefects, and is found in the blood of 95% of Americans. Perhaps this is whyso many men and women who have stopped cooking with non-stick fryingpans have seen immediate halt to their hair loss. The body can, over time, process out the harmful chemicals that non-stick cookware puts into yourbody -especially if your diet is rich in Cilantro.

Add to all this case studies of countless men and women who report positiveeffects in their own hair loss after they stopped cooking with the cookware. The danger here is two fold: using any metal spatulas, forks or knives thatscrape against the pan puts particles of PFOA directly in your food, as well asvapors that are released when the pan is heated to high temperatures.

So, you have a mission now. If you own any non-stick frying pans, you mustthrow them out. Don't just "put them away" -because you'll use them later.Throw them out today. Replace them with cast iron pans. While expensive indepartment stores, cast iron frying pans can usually be found very cheaplyon craigslist, at flea markets, or even on eBay.

  • Your Shampoo

Right now, we would like you to get up, go to the bathroom, and grab yourshampoo, and then come back to the computer.

Now, turn the bottle over and read the ingredients. You'll probably see a listlike this, which is the ingredients in a popular Tresemme shampoo:

Water (aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate(creates a lather), CocamidopropylBetaine, Cocodimonium HydroxypropylHydrolyzed Wheat Protein,Polyquaternium-39, Quaternium-22,Polyquaternium-10, Panthenol,Tocopheryl Acetate, Prunus AmygdalusDulcis Fruit Extract (Sweet Almond),Corylus Avellana Leaf Extract (Hazel),Helianthus Annuus Extract (Sunflower),Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract,Epilobium Angustifolium Extract,

Foeniculum Vulgare Fruit Extract (Fennel), Citric Acid, DMDM Hydantoin,Tetrasodium EDTA, Ammonium Chloride, Propylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol,Fragrance (parfum)

Since it's begginings, all of the people involved in Allied Natural R&D haveengaged in an ongoing debat over a central question: Why are more menand women losing their hair today VS 100 years ago. The hauntingingredients label on your shampoo, we beleive, provides essential insight.

The truth is, the average consumer has no idea what most of theseingredients are, how they're manufactured, if they're safe, and so on. And

  • the truth is, the manufacturer doesn't even know whether they're safe ornot. The approval process usually involves testing the product on animals tosee if they have any severe reactions, and if not, the product can go on themarket. Virtually no tests are done to test the long-term effects of any ofthese chemicals on the human body, on the scalp, or on the hair.

In other words, do you know what Polyquaternium-39, Quaternium-22,Polyquaternium-10, Panthenol, or Tocopheryl Acetate is? No? Then why areyou putting it all over your scalp and your hair every day? Could it bepossible that your particular genes and your particular hair follicles arehaving an adverse reaction to one of the 30+ chemicals in your shampoo? You bet it's possible.

That is why our first mission, as a company, was to develop a shampoomade not only from the safest ingredients available, but also made withpowerful plant extracts that would lower DHT and remove unwanted Sebum.

The Stimulair Shampoo should be the only shampoo you use because it hasbeen formulated specifically for men and women suffering from hair loss andthinning hair.

BPA and Plastic in the Microwave

Scientists still disagree about whether the chemical known as bisphenol A(also known as BPA), which is used in the production of most plastics andcan leach into food and drink, poses health hazards. Recently, an expertpanel organized by the National Institutes of Health concluded that thehormone-mimicking chemical poses minimal health risks overall. But astatement made by 38 independent scientists warned of a wide range ofadverse health effects.

Among these health effects listed were hair loss. This is because our hairgrowth, and our follicle health, is heavily dependent on the delicate balance

  • of hormones in our bodies. The BPA in plastics, which leaches out in smallamounts from water bottles (including most bottled water), plastic foodcontainers, soda bottles and any plastic container that stores food orbeverages.

Exposure is maximized when food is microwaved in the plastic container. Forthis reason, microwavable TV dinners are thought to be the most commonsource of exposure to BPA.

Here is an excellent report on BPA that you should watch.

For now, try to limit foods and beverages you drink out of plastic bottles, and whatever you do, do not microwave anything in plastic.

    Birth Control

We've been over the role that hormonesplay in hair loss. A group of hormonescalled androgens interfere with the naturalprocesses of hair growth. According todermatologist Michael Reed, MD, androgenhormones include testosterone, androsteinedione, and dihydrotestosterone(DHT) -- all of which are made in men'sbodies in large amounts, and in men andwomen's bodies in small amounts.

In some men and women, when testosterone comes in contact with enzymesresiding in the hair cell, it is converted into the more potent androgen DHT,which then binds with receptors deep within the hair follicle.

"Over time, an excess build-up [of DHT] in the follicle causes it to beginshrinking, which in turn alters the natural resting and growth phases of the

  • hair," says Reed, clinical associate professor of dermatology at NYU MedicalCenter, and a specialist in female hair loss. Some of the follicles eventuallydie, while others are rendered incapable of producing or maintaining healthyhair growth. The end result, says Reed, is hair loss -- and a condition that ismedically known as androgenic alopecia.

Whether or not you've been diagnosed with androgenic alopecia, it should becrystal clear that your hormones play a huge role in healthy hair growth. Therefore it should come as no surprise that birth control, each pill of whichpacks a hormonal punch on a daily basis, can contribute to hair loss.

However, Allied Natural has found that going on birth control can causeonset hair loss, and going off hair loss can cause onset hair loss. The onlysound advice we can give is that if you aren't already on birth control, carefully consider whether or not you need it before beginning it.

    Meditation

Physiologically, meditation is correlated with very strong hair shafts, follicles, roots and blood capillaries. Within3-4 minutes of deep breathing yourbody starts to consume lessoxygen, respiratory rate decreases, blood flow is increased and heartrate slows down. Sleep has similarpositive effects on your body, but ittakes 3-4 hours of sleep to havethe same results. It has beenproven that when your mind

focuses on a particular part of the body, the blood flow to that part increasesand cells receive more oxygen and other nutrients in abundance. The teamat Allied Natural, and the great majority of our clientele, practice meditation

  • virtually every day. By concentrating on hair growth they are able to moreabundantly follow the rest of the guidelines in Hair Growth Secrets and live avery fulfilling lifestyle.

Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity todifferent areas of the cortex - brain waves in the stress-prone right frontalcortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. This mental shift decreases thenegative effects of stress, mild depression and anxiety There is also lessactivity in the amygdala, where the brain processes fear.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, recorded the brain waves of stressed-out employees of a high-tech firm inMadison, Wisconsin. The subjects were split randomly into two groups, 25people were asked to learn meditation over eight weeks, and the remaining16 were left alone as a control group. ll participants had their brain wavesscanned three times during the study: at the beginning of the experiment, when meditation lessons were completed eight weeks later and four monthsafter that. The researchers found that the mediators showed a pronouncedshift in activity to the left frontal lobe. In other words, they were calmer andhappier than before.

Allied Natural conducted a similar study on stress, meditation and hairgrowth. The incredible results were, calm, happy woman with a full head ofhair to perpetuate their happiness and calmness. As an approach to life, weaving meditation seamlessly into almost every action throughout the dayseems unfamiliar to Western cultures. Is there something we can glean froma truely meditative and tranquil way of life that will improve our own? Youdon't need to quit your job, cut ties with people. Recent research indicatesthat meditating brings about dramatic effects in as little as a 10-minutesession. Several studies have demonstrated that subjects who meditated fora short time showed increased alpha waves (the relaxed brain waves) anddecreased anxiety and depression which allows the body to perform the restof its function effectively and efficiently.

Aside from determining its physiological effects, defining the actual act ofmeditation can be as elusive as imagining the sound of one hand clapping.

  • In his book, "What is Meditation?" (Shambhala Publications, 1999), RobNairn talks about it as a state of "bare attention." He explains, "It is a highlyalert and skillful state of mind because it requires one to remainpsychologically present and 'with' whatever happens in and around onewithout adding to or subtracting from it in any way."

The physical act of meditation generally consists of simply sitting quietly, focusing on one's breath, a word or phrase. However, a meditator may alsobe walking or standing. It isn't unusual, in fact, to see a meditating monk inthe highlands walking a few steps and then lying prostrate over and overagain until he reaches his destination many miles away.

There are many traditions and countless ways to practice meditation, andperhaps because of its polymorphous nature new meditators wonderwhether they are doing it correctly. According to Roger Thomson, Ph.D., apsychologist in private practice in Chicago and a Zen meditator, there is oneway to know for sure: "If you're feeling better at the end, you are probablydoing it right."Thomson makes it sound easy, but many people can't seem to get the hangof it, no matter how often they try. "It can be difficult," says Steven Hendlin,Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in Irvine, California. "It may be a struggle toovercome the internal chatter that we all experience."

Seeking methods for quieting that internal chatter and reducing stress arewhat initially attract many people to meditation. "It is a very effectivestress-reducer, which is a way into the practice for many people," saysThomson, who sometimes refers clients to meditation. "If someone isstruggling with feelings of anxiety, he or she may benefit from its calmingaspects. And it's absolutely facilitative of mental health because it bringsabout a higher level of self-acceptance and insight about oneself."

But greater awareness about oneself can be a double-edged sword. MarkEpstein, M.D., a New York City psychiatrist in private practice and ameditation practitioner, extends a caution about one of the ironies ofmeditating. "It could actually raise your level of anxiety if there are certainfeelings you are not owning." In other words, there's nowhere to hide when

  • you're practicing "bare attention." And this, for some people, is both thegood and the bad news. That's why some experts suggest marrying meditation to counseling. "Bothallow the person to be present for the moment, open and nondefensive,"says Thomson, who explores the complementary nature of the two in apaper published in the American Journal of Psychotherapy. In bothmeditation and counseling, we are trying not to get caught up in internalpreoccupation, but to be intimately present with what is happening here andnow.

To explain his thoughts on the connection, Thomson compares Zen torelational psychoanalytical theories. He writes that it "encourages itspractitioners to become aware of the fundamentally distorted aspects of anoverly individualistic view of human experience. Recognizing that the truenature of all individuals is emphatically non-individual, neither lasting norseparate, is the wisdom of Zen."

    Household Cleaners & alternatives

Since the beginings of AlliedNatural, one lifestyle element hasreceived more attention from usduring our interviews and casestudies than anything else:household cleaning products. Infact, we've debated whether or notto come out with a line of safecleaning products, but ultimatelydecided against it because so many

    great alternatives already exist.

  • As sad as the stereotype is, we find that the men and women we talk to, byand large, are still doing the majority of cleaning in their households. Thisexposes them to household cleaners on a regular basis, and to a muchgreater degree than men.

Links between chronic illnesses and cleaning products have been building upmore and more as the years go by. Furthermore, the evidence for cleaningproducts disrupting the delicate hormonal balances in your body are nowoverwhelmingly clear: household cleaning products have been linked todecreases in fertility, menstrual changes, miscarriage, premature birth, andadverse impacts on the reproductive system.

Peer reviewed studies have yet to link cleaning products to hair loss, but ourown studies cast little doubt on the high correlation between exposure tohousehold cleaners and hair loss.

Here's a list of what needs to be avoided, and safe alternatives. Consultthis guide whenever cleaning anything in your home!

    For This Try This

    SurfaceCleaners

Weak acids like vinegar & lemon juice are good at cuttinggrease.

Mix: 1 quart hot water, 1 tsp vegetable oil-based soap/detergent, 1 tsp borax, & 2 tblsp vinegar. Vinegar is usedhere as mild acid to cut grease; borax is used as a watersoftener, good in areas with hard water, to prevent soapydeposits.

Mix 1/2 cup vinegar in 1 quart of warm water.

Dissolve baking soda in hot water for a general cleaner.

  • Dishes

Hand Washing:Use vegetable oil-based soaps/detergents.Automatic dishwasher:Automatic dishwashing detergents have a very high levelof phosphates.

    Productswith DrainOpeners

Use a strainer on all drains to reduce plugged drains.

Pour boiling water down the kitchen drain once a week tokeep it grease free.

Toss a handful of baking soda and 1/2 cup vinegar downthe drain. Cover the drain, sealing in the carbon dioxidegas bubbles as they agitate your clog loose. Let sit 15min. Rinse with 2 quarts boiling water. Follow withplunger.

Most bathroom sink clogs are caused by hair. Prevent witha good sink strainer.

Use a metal plumbers snake to unclog stubborn drains. Aplumbers snake is a great investment.

    Roots in drains:

Do not use copper sulfate-based root control products fordrains blocked by roots. This product releases copper intothe ground and surface water.

Have drains cleared by a professional who usesmechanical root removal techniques or non-metallic,foaming herbicides.

Have breaks in sewer lines repaired to prevent furtherentry of roots.

  • GlassCleaners

1/4 cup white vinegar / 1 qt. water.

The pros use a squeeze of dishwashing liquid in gal.water.

A quality squeegee is the pro's secret to streaklesswindows.

    OvenCleaners

Mix 2 table spoons liquid dish soap & 2 teaspoons borax in2 cups of warm water. Apply and let sit for 20 minutes, then scrub.

Use a non-chlorinated scouring powder, like Bon Ami.

Use a baking soda, salt, and water paste.

Clean glass oven door with Bon Ami. Use razor blade orspatula for tough spots.

Avoid aerosol oven cleaners. Easy-off brand has a non-caustic formula with no lye (sodium hydroxide).

Don't use any abrasive cleaning materials on self-cleaningovens.

    Prevention:

Periodically clean the oven with baking soda and water.

Protect oven floor from spills. Always place a cookie sheetor foil pan under pans to catch drippings.

    MildewRemovers

Scrub mildew spots with borax/water with a nylonscouring pad. If plaster wall is penetrated by mold, leavea borax/water paste on the wall for a couple days.Vacuum off.

  • Try scrubbing mildew with a vinegar and salt paste, ifproblem is not severe.

To clean mildew from a shower curtain use a mixture of1/2 cup borax/1 gal water

Or, try vinegar full strength, then rinse.

Or, machine wash curtain, with a towel. Add 1 cup vinegarto rinse cycle.

    Prevention:

Wash grout often enough so mold can't get established.

    Always air out damp areas.

Seal grout after cleaning by painting grout with
