What is Haiku?
Haiku" is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables.
The lines rarely rhyme.

Haiku and Syllables
A syllable is a part of a word pronounced as a chunk of the word. You have learned about syllables your whole education. Ex) Cat- only has one chunk of sound making it a one syllable word. The word "Haiku" has two syllables: Hai-ku

Your turn to write a Haiku
Today you are going to write a Haiku in your Poetry Anthology. This Haiku can be thought of like a riddle. Think of this poem as a riddle that answers the question “What Am I?”

You are going to write a Haiku to describe something, anything you want! You will post your Haiku in the Discussion Board (and also write it in your anthology). Your fellow classmates will then attempt to guess what you were describing after
reading you Haiku in our Class Discussion Board.
