Found Poetry: Words to GoCreateachartwiththreecolumnsandheadingsontheboard.Askstudentstocopythechartontolinedpaper.Afterafirstread-throughofGetting There,rereadthetextoutloud,thistimewithoutshowingthephotos.Askstudentstoiden-tifyalltheaction words(verbsandverbphrases).Recordtheminthefirstcolumn.
Readthroughthebookagain,thistimeshowingthepho-tographs.Askstudentstousedescriptivelanguage(adjec-tivesandnouns)todescribethepeopleandthingsintheimages(e.g.smilinggirl,sleepybaby,blackhorse,blue
sea,bigwheels).Recordtheseideasinthesecondcolumn.Encouragestudentstothinkofasmanydescriptionsasthey can.
Brainstormalistofadverbsinspiredbythephotosandlisttheminthethirdcolumn.
Usingscissors,studentscutoutthewordsfromeachcolumn,keepingtheminseparatepiles.Instructthemtomanipu-lateandcombinewordsandphrasesfromthethreepilestocreateafive-linefoundpoem.Missingbutnecessarywords,suchaspronounsorprepositions,canbeaddedandwordformschangedtosuitthelogicofthepoem.

Drama Activity: People MoversDivideclassintogroupsofsixtoeight.Eachgroupwillcon-structafantasyvehicleormachinethatcanmovepeoplefromoneplacetoanother,usingallmembersofthegroup.Theonlyresourceavailableistheirbodies.Groupswillneedabout10to15minutestoplanandrehearsetheircreations.Finishedvehiclesarepresentedtoothermembersoftheclass,completewithactionsandsoundeffects.Theaudiencetriestoguesswhatthevehicleisandhowitworks.
