Guide to Setting Up Your Test Environment (Safari Browser)

February 8, 2015 The purpose of this document is to provide instructions for Technology Coordinators to take proactive steps to ensure all online testing devices using the Safari Browser on are configured to allow students to enter login information and begin testing without needing to accept the Java Plug-In or click through other Pop-Ups.

Setup Checklist

Step 1. Disable Pop-Up Blocker

Step 2. Accept / Allow Java Plug-in

Step 3. Disable Password Saving Feature Verification

Step 4. Login to the PARCC Training TestNav Site (Used for Infrastructure Trial)

Step 5. Login to your State TestNav Site (Used for the Spring Administration)

Step 6. Review Additional Information

Setup

Step 1: Disable Pop-Up Blocker o Option 1: From the Safari menu, make sure “Block Pop-Up Windows” is unchecked.

o Option 2: On the Safari menu select “Preferences.”

Select the “Security” tab and uncheck the “Block Pop-Up Windows” option.

Step 2: Disable the Password Saving Feature

o In the Preferences menu select the Autofill tab. o Uncheck the “User names and passwords” option.

o Close the Preferences window.

Step 3: Accept / Allow Java Plug-in o To configure Java in Safari, the Java Plug-in must be allowed to run in Unsafe mode for the TestNav

websites. Begin by navigating to your State TestNav URL. If you are unsure of your State TestNav URL please reference the table at the bottom of this document.

o Enter the Test Login Account credentials. Username = username Password = password

o One or more of the following pop-ups will likely appear:

Click “Trust.”

Checkmark the box “Do not show this again for apps from the publisher and location above” and click “Run.”

Checkmark the box “Do not show this again for this app and web site” and click “Allow.”

o After clicking through the initial Java Prompts an error 3047 will appear if Java has not yet been configured on this device. If it has already been configured the secure form will load successfully (Which is completing Step 4 / 5 in this document, depending on the URL)

o At this point, you can repeat the login process for any other TestNav URLs you need to configure

(like parcctrng.testnav.com for Infrastructure Trials). o To configure Safari to run this TestNav URL in unsafe mode, click on the Safari menu and open

“Preferences.” o Navigate to the Security tab and click the “Manage Website Settings” button.

o Choose “Java” on the left side of the page, and locate the URLs for your State TestNav site and the parcctrng.testnav.com site on the right side of the page.

o Select the options for each site and choose “Run in Unsafe Mode.”

o Click the Done button in the bottom right corner of the Settings window and close the Preferences

window.

o Additional Java Exceptions and Configuration

Click the Apple icon and choose “System Preferences”, then select “Java.” In the Java Control Panel Select the Java heading.

Verify that old versions of Java aren’t being used.

Click the “Security” heading. Verify that the following URLs are allowed to run Java:

http://*.pearsontestcontent.com

https://*.pearsontestcontent.com

http://*.pearsonaccessnext.com

https://*.pearsonaccessnext.com

http://*.testnav.com

https://*.testnav.com

Click the “Advanced” heading. Under the “Mixed code (sandboxed vs. trusted) security verification” heading select the

“Enable – hide warning and run with protections” option.

Close the Java Console.

Pop-Up Blocker, the Java Plug-in, and Remember Password have now been configured, please continue to the Verification steps.

Note: The exact menu options may be slightly different depending on the Operating System and Browser Version.

Verification

Step 4: Login to the PARCC Training TestNav Site (Used for Infrastructure Trials)

o Open the Safari Browser and proceed to the PARCC Training TestNav Site: http://parcctrng.testnav.com

o Enter the Test Login Account credentials. Username = username Password = password

o Click the Sign In button. o The secure TestNav form should now load and after clicking the Start Test Now button, and then the

Start Section button, a success message will appear.

Troubleshooting: If the secure TestNav form fails to load, please reapply the Setup steps in this document. Contact PARCC Support if the issue is not easily resolved. The most common error is from Java not being run in unsafe mode. Attempt to repeat Step 3 from this document and then close and re-open the browser to try the login process again.

Step 5: Login to Your State TestNav Site (Used for the Spring Administration). o Open the Safari Browser and proceed to your State TestNav Site URL. If you are unsure of your State

TestNav URL please review the table at the bottom of this document. o Enter the Test Login Account credentials.

Username = username Password = password

o Click the Sign In button. o The secure TestNav form should now load and after clicking the Start Test Now button, and then the

Start Section button, a success message will appear.

o Consider methods of making the URLs in Step 4 and Step 5 of this document more easily accessible to Students and Administrators: Setting the homepage, bookmarks, desktops icons, etc..
