1. INTRODUCTION This Guidebook covers tour itinerary, transportation and accommodation and maps intended to orientate travelers of the upcoming visit to South Korea. The highlight of the trip is skiing at the scenic Yongpyong Resort in Pyongchang-gun, a county in Gangwon-do province where the popular Korean drama “Winter Sonata” was filmed. (See map location in Item 4) In Seoul, travelers will have free time for shopping and eating, visit historical sites, folk villages and for the youths to enjoy themselves in one theme park of their own choice. 2. 3. YONGPYONG RESORT

Yongpyong Resort is located on the ridge of Mount Balwangsan in

Gangwon province 700 meters above sea level.

With average 250cm of snow each year you can

enjoy skiing from November until April of the

following year. Compared to other ski resorts,

ski season is considerably longer. It is 215km from Seoul, and with the

construction of a 4-lane highway, the travel time has been shortened to

2 hours.

There are 18 slopes and 15 lifts in total, with

a 3.7km long gondola, which can

accommodate 8 people at once. There are

other convenient indoor facilities such as the

swimming pool and sauna, and within the

complex there is a sledding hill, indoor golf course with a capacity of 6

holes, survival game park and the indoor mountain bike path.

There are also the forest bath walk, archery,

crocket, tennis courts and the Campsites. For

accommodation there are hotels, condos,

youth hostels, which add up to 1,087 rooms

available in total.

4. MAP OF SOUTH KOREA

The map is to orientate travelers of their location and traveling route

while in South Korea. South Korea is

divided into 8 provinces, 6

metropolitan cities and 1 special

city.

The 8 provinces are Gangwon,

Gyeonggi, Chungcheongbuk,

Chungcheongnam, Jeollanam,

Gyeongsangbuk, Gyeongsangnam &

Jeju. Province in Korean is known as

“Do”.

These are the 6 metropolitan cities

Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Gwangju,

Daejeon, Ulsan. And, special city is

Seoul.

These are further subdivided into a variety of smaller entities, including:

cities (si), counties (gun), districts (gu),

towns (eup), townships (myeon), neighborhoods (dong) and villages (ri).

Yongpyong Resort is located in Gangwon-do, which lies in the mid-

eastern part of the Korean peninsula flanked by the sea and mountains.

Gangwon-do is full of natural attractions. Visitors can enjoy a fantastic

view of Mt. Seoraksan and Mt. Chiaksan as the scenery alters by season.

About 82% of the land

is mountainous. The

eastern region runs

along the coast, the

western region lies

face-to-face with Seoul,

and the southern part

is connected to another

inland region. The

Demilitarized Zone

divides northern

Gangwon-do, and

Gangwon-do is the

departure point to the

Geumgangsan Diamond Mountains and Mt. Baekdusan in North Korea.

5. GETTING FROM INCHEON AIRPORT TO YONGPYONG RESORT (OPTION 1)

Traveling time from Incheon International Airport to Yongpyeong Resort

takes about 4 and a half hour.

Bus information & purchase of ticket at the airport can be obtained at

the transportation information center (near the exit number 2, 4, 9 &

13) on the arrival floor (1st floor) of the passenger terminal.

At Incheon International Airport, takes airport bus to Seoul’s Jamsil

Station and then transfers to cross-country bus to Hoenggye

(Hwenggye, Gangnung) Intercity Bus Terminal in Gangwon-do.

Reservation clerk said that there are three to five buses leaving for

Hoenggye bus terminal in beginning and middle December.

Reservation is not necessary as they have enough buses. However,

it depends on the weather condition and may not even operate if

there is bad weather.

Arriving at Hoenggye Bus Terminal, walk past the gas station to

the left of the Intercity Bus Terminal, wait in front of the post

office for the free shuttle bus to take you to the resort. The bus

runs every 30 minutes.

6. GETTING FROM INCHEON AIRPORT TO YONGPYONG RESORT –OPTION 2

Take the bus bound for Wonju at the Bus Stop 9C at Incheon

International Airport (Service Hours: 09:10 ~ 21:10 / Travel Time: 2

hours, 30 minutes / Fare: ₩12,100)

Transfer to the bus bound for Hoenggye at Wonju Cross-Country Bus

Terminal (7:40am ~ 19:40pm / Travel Time: 1 hour, 40 minutes / Fare:

₩6,100) →

Get off at Hoenggye Cross-Country Bus Terminal. Take the free shuttle

bus to Yongpyong Resort in front of Hoenggye Post Office next to the

terminal

7. RETURN FROM YONGPYONG RESORT TO SEOUL

Reconfirm return ticket at the tour desk when arrive at YongPyong, Tour

Desk located at the Ground Floor in Tower Condo at telephone 033-330-

7665 or 7666.

8. ACCOMMODATION AT YONGPYONG RESORT

For lodging, we will stay at Yongpyong Hostel in a 5 persons Ondol

room. Ondol is the Korean version of Tatami flooring, which is heated to

keep warm in winter. The facilities include a shared kitchen. One person

would have to sleep separately in a bunk bed.

9. ACTIVITIES IN YONGPYONG RESORT

For beginners, go to this web site for ski lesson.

The best confidence builder for a new skier is

being able to stop your downhill movement. So, as

you are moving, bend both your knees a little

more, putting more of your weight forward. As

you increase the pressure on the skis with both

feet, you will feel yourself slowing your downhill travel and beginning to

stop. Then slowly ease backwards. With this forward pressure you will

again move downhill.

Gangwon-do has many popular tourist attractions. The popular Korean TV drama “Winter Sonata” was filmed in Yongpyong Resort. This location has beautiful scenery and a must see.

THINGS-TO-DO IN GANGNEUNG-SI

There are many other beautiful tourist attractions but not enough time to cover all of them. In Gangneung-si (city), there are many scenic attractions such as Odaesan National Park, Ojukheon Residence. Gyuryong Falls, Sogeumgang Valley. For more information, refer to Gangneung-si Guidebook.

10. ACCOMMODATION IN SEOUL

Accommodation in Seoul is in Open Guesthouse; rated 94% by Hostel

Open Guest House has good access to major view sites in Seoul. Step

out and only minutes later, you will be in the middle of Seoul's

enthusiasm. And not only convenient, the main policy of OPEN GUEST

Direction:

From the subway – Hansung University Station Line 4, take Exit No. 5

1. Stop at Hansung University Subway Exit no. 5. From Exit no. 5, turn

left toward main road and see “MOMENT BAR” on your right side. You

can also see “KIA Motors and S-Oil” on the other side of road.

2. When you see “MOMENT BAR” and BEAUTIFUL STORE” located

just next to “MOMENT BAR”, you go straight for about 50 meters (on

the way you could see a tradition Korean costume shop and small

unknown Korean resaurants, as well as electric bulb shop etc). Move

your steps until you get HANHWA-painting shop on your right side.

At Samhwa painting shop, stop your step and you will find an old city

wall in front, there are two side streets on your right side, take one has

little hill and look upward to see old gate. Please do not take the other

one-way street.

Take about 30 steps and find a small park on your left side, at the end

of a small park, you turn right and you will see our sign “OPEN GUEST

HOUSE” and it will be there for you. CAUTION: From the exit of

subway if you see “Family Mart” (24 hours covenient store) on your left

side, please turn back, otherwise it leads you to the wrong direction.
