Getting started…• Go to the LNT website:

http://schools.richmond.gov.uk/support-seat• Click on ‘AEN Self-review Framework’ on the left menu.• Here you will find the PowerPoint guide and the AEN Self–

review Framework guidance notes (pdf). The notes offer some further information that will help you to complete the document.

• Click on ‘AEN Self review framework page’. You may be asked for a password – tp1sult8

• Right click on ‘Self review tool’, select ‘Save target as’ and then save to your computer. DO NOT work on the version directly from the website as this causes problems later on.

• Open the saved version on your computer and select ‘Enable macros’ when prompted

Getting started…

If there is a problem enabling the macros, first check your security settings in Microsoft Excel by going into:

• Tools

• Macro

• Security

• reduce the security level to medium

This should allow you access to the document and have the macros enabled when you open it again.

IntroductionThe introduction gives an overview of the AEN Self–review Framework and further guidance on completing the document. It will be helpful to you to read through these instructions before you begin completing the document.

Key Area 1 - Schools ContextThe first 2 boxes on the SEN data page will help you to

complete Key Area 1Explain the

context of the school in relation

to the surrounding area e.g. whether the school has a unit

Hover over the red triangle in the right hand corner and a pop up will appear that explains the information you may want to include e.g. changes to staffing, structure etc

Key Area 2 – Outcomes (2a and 2b)Use your attendance data to make a judgement about whether the attendance in your school is good. The national average for primary schools is approximately 95% and 92% for secondary schools. Statements 2a and 2b are not about strategies used by your school but the actual levels and whether this is adequate

Use your exclusion data to make a judgement about the levels of exclusions

in your school and the impact of your strategies.

Hover over this red triangle to see the values for each grade. Use the drop down button to change the value

Key Area 2 – Outcomes 2dTake some time to look at the SEN data page prior to completing 2d. Ask yourself the following questions about each key stage in order to analyse this data and make decisions about progress:

• How many SEN pupils do not make the appropriate levels of progress i.e. 2 levels at KS2 (you have this information in the table on the SEN data page)

• Who are these students and why did they not make progress?• What is the school doing to ensure students such as these

achieve greater level of progress in subsequent years?• How many students are making appropriate levels of progress

and what is the school doing for these students?• For each key stage, how does the school data for pupils with SEN

compare to Richmond data for the number of students not achieving expected levels?

• How does the school data for non SEN compare with the LA data and how do the two of these compare with each other i.e. does the school do as well for its SEN cohort as it does for non SEN?

for Key Area 2 to write brief statements in the

main strengths and areas of development

boxes. These areas for development will form your SEN/AEN action plan and some e.g.2d action points related to

progress, may be reflected in the whole school development

plan

Key Area 3 and 4Continue to complete Key Area 3 and 4 using the same method as above.

• Key Area 3.1 – the quality of teaching

• Key Area 3.2 – the use of assessment to support learning

• Key Area 3.3 – the extent to which the curriculum meets pupils’ needs

• Key Area 3.4 – the effectiveness of care, guidance and support

• Key Area 4 – How effective are leadership and management

• Use the pop up that appears as you hover over the statements to help you make a judgement on your grade

• Select the strategies that are appropriate to your school

• Select the evidence that you have in your school to support your judgements

• Decide and write in the main strengths for the area

• Decide and write in the areas for development for your school – keep these brief

Using the information on this page and by looking back through the document, complete the school’s main strengths. These should be half a dozen or so that the school

can celebrate.

Select your main points for development that may be reflected in your school’s development plan. This should not be

every point you have made throughout the framework but the main areas of focus.
