Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang Volume One Chapter Three

Ever since going to the shrine with Pingting, Lady Hua became very attached to Pingting and had an everlasting

supply of subjects to talk about with her. She was closer to Pingting even more than her other girls who had been

with her for the last few years. Lady Hua wanted Pingting to go with her everywhere.

Just like that, Pingting came from a coarse-work maid to a wedding seamstress to Lady Huas personal maid. She

had skipped several stages, which surprised everyone.

September wasnt summer, but it wasstill quite hot.

The laughter of two girls was often heard behind the Ladys main room.

Then is it like this?

Its not like that either.

Lady Hua had tried to sew for the whole day, but she still didnt get it. She threw aw ay her sewing and sighed

dramatically. I refuse to learn, its no fun and my fingers are full of wounds.

Pingting laughed, I told Lady it wasnt fun. When I first learned it, all of my fingers were swollen. Those wounds are

very small anyway. She was supposed to escape earlier but since she hadnt had any news of her master, she

decided to stay.

That guqin was really good, though Pingting liked it, she asked to have it displayed in Lady Huas room. After all, that

qin was namely given to Hua prefectures lady.

I wanted to sew something myself for him Lady Hua meant her secret lover.

Lady, the housekeeper was looking for her. Her face broke into a smile when she saw them and hurriedly smiled,

oh Lady was here, I had a difficult time finding you.Someone wants to see you.

Who wants to see me?

A handsome young man and the person who brought you the qin is also there. He claims his name is Dong Dingnan.

Pingtings expression darkened. He really came.

Bring him inside, Lady Hua told the house keeper before turning around and grabbing Pingtings hand. Her eyes

were bright when she said, see? I guessed right didnt i? he really did want to see you.

Pingting laughed, hes looking for Lady, not me.

She pulled Pingting into a guest house and they sat down behind a blind. Soon the housekeeper led the guests inside

Lady, Mr Dong is here.

Okay. Housekeeper you may leave.

Lady Hua and Pingting peeped at the man.

The housekeeper had left and there was only a young man left in the room. His clothes were expensive yet not flashy,

the fabric being silk. His eyebrows were black and a graceful royal air surrounded him, thus making him an

extremely handsome young man.

Lady Hua stared and then whispered, your qin skills must be really good, or you wouldnt have attracted such a

good looking guy.

Pingting was just as shocked as lady Hua, having no idea how this had happened.

She had been in Jing Anwang prefecture for many years and so she knew immediately that he was not just a normal

rich man.

Could he be an official of Dong Lin?

No, could he even be a member of the royal family?

Its not entirely impossible because this is Dong Lins capital. His manners and the way he gave me that qin is even

more suspicious.

I, Dong Dingnan, have selfishly come to see you Lady. Dong Dingnan entered the room and when he saw the blinds,

he knew immediately that she was quietly observing. He was extremely confident and he laughed a little.

His family name wasnt actually Dong and his name certainly wasnt Dingnan. He was the current ruler of Dong

Lins very own brother, Zhen Beiwang, Chu Beijie. He was often out on the battle field and used to the oppositions

plans. He had just returned from the battlefield feeling very bored when he heard qin music that really soothed his

heart.

Who wouldnt take the opportunity?He thought.

As the brother of the most influential ruler in Dong Lin, he had planned everything out. First wait and listen, ask to

see at a late, give a qin and research the Hua family before going to their prefecture.

Lady Hua saw how Pingting liked the look of the guest. She rolled her eyes and said, since you already know how

inconvenient this is, why did you still come to see Lady?

Pingting raised an eyebrow but Lady Hua was clearly pleased with herself.

The sound of qin was memorable and I have come here to ask for another piece, Chu Beijie smiled radiantly into

the blinds.

Pingting began to analyse Dong Dingnan, but she could not recall a Ding family in Dong Lin. This person is using

a fake name, which is extremely suspicious. If he finds out who I am, maybeshe cut in before Lady Hua could, are

Pingting put the qin in front of her in response.

a piece for you.

Chu Beijie smiled, thank you for playing Lady, but I would like it if you play another piece for me.

I have already returned your favour with the piece I just played. Pingtings voice was suddenly cold,

Playing the qin is fine with me but playing for someone who is using a fake name does not make me feel good.

Chu Beijie rubbed his hands together and asked, why does Lady think I am using a fake name?

Im the one asking questions here. Pingting knew that her suspicions were right so she added, you only need to

tell me whether I guessed right or not.

Chu Beijie stared intently into the blinds. He had heard that Hua Prefectures Lady had one of a kind qin skills but

he hadnt guessed that her music was difficult to pursue. Lady is right; Dong Dingnan is one of my pseudonyms,

though I didnt imagine Lady to see through that.

Instead, he laughed and asked back, then why is Lady hiding behind the blinds?

real name.

Chu Beijie sipped his tea, does Lady not want anything?

He wasnt exactly right but Pingting couldnt help feeling impressed about his confidence.

Pingting slowly walked to the blinds and looked at him.

Chu Beijie sat there proudly with a smug face that said I know youre secretly looking at me. Pingting noticed the

decorative stitches of his clothes, finally letting her eyes fall on his jade pendant.

She stiffened.

The jade pendant was shiny and it was obviously expensive. What surprised her though was the Dong Lin royal

family emblem.

Hes one of the Dong Lin royalfamily.

Pingtings eyes suddenly lit up. She had not heard any news about Jing Anwang ever since coming to Dong Lin. She

believed that this was a good opportunity. Why not ask Dong Dingnan?

She quickly planned what she was going to say.

I see that youare a music critique, do you have an opinion after one piece?

My opinion? Chu Beijie stared into the blinds, the corners of his mouth suddenly lifting into a smile, bemused he

replied. The piece was like a mystical swan flying through the clouds and like a strong eagle conquering the fields.

This shows that Lady is curious towards all aspects of life and does not care for riches. Lady is like a man in more

ways than one.

Pingting fell silent.

Chu Beijie was cleverer than she thought. He was able to tell her personality from one piece.

Pingting replied, you are indeed right, but unlike a man I cannot do anything. For example, the world outside must

be big and beautiful but I have not seen this myself.

This was selfish of Pingting but Lady Hua approved anyway.

Pingting took a deep breath, I heard that apart from Dong Lin, there is a country called Gui Le and it is very

beautiful there. Dont they all love to sing?

Thats right. Gui Le has many mountainous scenery, the people there like to dance and sing but the most valuable

thing in Gui Le is their bronze. Gui Le makes more bronze in one year than Dong Lin in three years. Chu Beijie

brightened at the mention of Gui Le because that was one of his few interests.

He spent many days pondering over the maps and couldnt stop the enthusiasm creeping into his voice.

How surprising, thats quite a lot of bronze.

Indeed, they are quite a rich country, but this has made them too relaxed. They are a weak country at the moment,

because they keep on fighting internally.

Chu Beijie summed up Gui Les problem in a couple of sentences.

Pingting didnt know what to say.

Jing Anwang Prefecture was the core of Gui Le and since Pingting had grown up there, she knew more details than

the average peasant.

Of course if the enemy hadnt known the internal situation of Jing Anwang, how could the entire prefecture burned

down?

When Pingting heard Gui Les biggest problem from the enemy, she couldnt help asking, so does Gui Le not have

any form of monarchy or officials?

Well yes, Gui Le does have an official named Jing Anwang. He has looked after the armies and governed the country

for many years. His smile turned to a thin line, but because the Jing Anwang army was too big and successful, the

new ruler decided to wipe him out.

leader is strange.

Chu Beijie sat up straighter, making his face look even wiser. He laughed, Jing Anwang may be loyal to

Gui Le, but he hates my Dong Lin. Now that Jing Anwang Prefecture is gone and Gui Le is without a strong leader,

Dong Lin can expand its forces into Gui Le.

Pingting quickly registered the news, I see, then our Dong Lin is even stronger. So did no one in Jing

Anwang Prefecture survive?

Jing Anwang Prefecture has some weird people but I heard they werent there at the time of the fire. It is believed

that they have escaped Gui Le. He Su is still trying to capture them, despite being on the same side. A real pity.

criticise. Though he had not seen her personally, he knew that she was beautiful from a portrait he had asked for.

Looking at the figures shape inside the blinds, he knew that it had to be her.

Each word filled the audiences heart and mind, like jade beads clattering on a plate, yet sometimes like a cup quietly

being placed onto the table.

Pingting ended the piece by singing surviving the disaster several times and held the note there, letting it slowly die

away.

Chu Beijie had closed his eyes and he took a while to come back to his senses. This surviving the trouble song is

usually enforced by the pain and suffering of the beautiful women. However, for you, theres a complete different

feeling. Its more victorious, less suffering but still araw pain.

I have also heard of Jing Anwangs price He Xia. Dont they all say hes the best official in Gui Le?

Chu Beijie smiled at the mention of himself, what does Lady think?

Ive been inside for too long, how should I know? I have heard, from the newest servants, that He Xia fought Chu

Beijie a while ago, at the borders of Gui Le.

Who won the battle? Pingting knew that the victor had to be her master but she thought the victory had been too

easy. Sure, she did leave them into a trap, but they admitted defeat and retreated a bit too quickly.

When Zhen Beiwang, Chu Beijie returned, did he hate his soldiers? If the main Dong Lin ruler ripped Chu Beijie of

his authority, doesnt that mean that Gui Le would be at an advantage?

He Xia won. Chu Beijie replied without any emotion.

In other words, Zhen Beiwang lost?

No, Zhen Beiwang won too.

Oh?

Chu Beijie gave a dark smile, He Xia small victory, Chu Beijie big victory.

No one would every understand what he meant by that.

Pingting hoped her master would be safe. If the main ruler learnt that Zhen Beiwang had also won, he would

definitely kill him.

But why did they win?She had thought of many scenarios to answer this question several times before, but Dong

Dingnan had just confirmed her biggest fear.

Why is Lady so quiet? his voice was deep.

Pingting didnt want to arouse his suspicions so she changed to literature and art. She was still worried that she

might have accidentally given away her identity. She kept her answers short and always spoke curiously.

Chu Beijie liked talking about nature, but royal blood still ran his veins, so he veered off course. He began to talk

about the shape of the place, then the attacking techniques and what other techniques to use. Hed explain why to

attack and what to do secretly before the war.

Hearing the silence inside the blinds, he tried to smile. My discussions arent interesting enough. I swapped back

to the war again.

Pingting, inside the blinds, was thinking that this man had to be a senior advisor of the Dong Lin army. Suddenly, she

had another thought, could this guy be Zhen Beiwang himself?

No wayhow can there be such a coincidence?She shook her head several times to forget the thought. She

whispered, thank you. As you can see, I am female, so Ido not understand these things.

The two people unwittingly talked the whole afternoon away.

Just before sunset, two knocks were heard outside the door and the young man who had passed on the qin came in

and whispered in Chu Beijies ear.

Pingting saw this and felt that they were talking about the war, possibly even Master himself. She tried to hear what

they were saying, but she was too far away.

Chu Beijie sat up straighter, talking with Lady and hearing Lady play the qin was very pleasant. I wont bother you

anymore, Dingnan gives you his thanks. I will come again in two days.

He got up too fast, too sudden and Pingting was even more suspicious that it was something to do with her master.

She turned hostile, perhaps another girl has arrived outside your home.

Dong Dingnan couldnt help thinking that she was very rude and was about to retort back when Pingting suddenly

laughed. I know, I know. Women dont interest you, war is what you like. Of course I shouldnt hold you back.

Her warm laughter rippled out and his eyes flashed, relieved. Lady was just talking about young Jing

Anwangmaybe youll see him in a couple of days.

This struck her like lightning and she almost dropped her tea cup. Has Master been found, maybe even captured?

She was about to ask again but Chu Beijie had already stood up. Im very sorry. I must leave immediately, goodbye.

But Chu Beijie really was in a rush so he simply waved, before walking away rapidly into the night.
