05 Brief Report Robo Race is always the prime competition of the robotics and also among the engineering students. To make the Race track the volunteers had put their maximum efforts, they had used cement blocks to make the track above the ground, the used motors and convener belt to increase the difficulty and also used broken bottles and wooden ply to make the track more eye catching and difficult. Maximum participation was in the Robo Race. So volunteers had worked till late evening to complete the 1st round of the event. On the 2nd day qualified students again did the racing but this time the difficulty was increased compare to the 1st round by introducing the sloped cement track covered with the grass which makes it a sleeper track. Also in the 2nd round some Bonus point was introduced which was placed outside the track and had a highest difficult.

The dimensions of retaining wall were specified as Minimum height should be 25 cm. There were total 55 entries giving 55 different designs of retaining wall. The model was tested by placing it in front of the opening of a box. The sand was filled gradually in the box. With increase in the height of sand in the box, the pressure on the wall also increases. The filling of sand was stopped when displacement of model or deflection of wall was noticed. wall will to be decided by the participants. 6. The load carrying capacity of retaining structure will be

evaluated by filling sand behind wall. 05 Brief Report The concept of retaining structures is basically a subject of Geo-

tech engineering but this event mainly comprised the concept of making a model which can retain sand behind it. Participants had put their efforts for making innovative and effective model by adopting all possible means. As the main material in the model - Thermocol is very light weight, it alone cannot resist the sand and thus allowance to use sand in the model was given. Participants filled sand in their model up to the 1/3rd height from bottom to increase the retaining capacity of model. One hour given to prepare the model and then after initial weight of the model was carried out. Winners were selected based on the ratio of weight of structure to the weight of sand retained by the structure. Prof.Nirav Umravia from CKPCET, Surat and Er. Nehal Desai from Unique Laboratory, Suratwere invited as a jury member for this event. After the competition, many students perceived the

GTU TECHFEST 2015 Report of Structure based events-STRUT and SLUMP CONE TEST

Department : CIVIL Name of

event: Structure Based Event(Compressive Structure) -STRUT

Sr. No.

Content Details

01 Description of event

This event is based on building model of compressive structure. The materials for model making will be given from the event location. The participants will be given a sheet having a rectangle drawn on it. The participants will have to place their columns made up of straws on the periphery only. The straw columns depict the Compression External loads will be applied on the top of the plane of the column and failure of column will be noticed. The model having minimum self weight should take maximum external load. The minimum ratio of self weight of the model to the ratio of the external load at failure will be considered as winning criteria.

4 students per team

03 Rules and regulations

1. No outside materials shall be used for model making or else the participants will be disqualified.

2. Pattern or frame of compressive structure will be shown at the event location.

3. The model will be checked for its load carrying capacity by application of load on the structure.

4. Straws, Thermocol Sheets and strings/threads, pins will be provided.

5. Time for model making is 2 hrs. 6. Instructions and specification will be given on the spot. 7. Only pins can be used as connectors. 8. Minimum height of the column should be 45 cm. 9. Max 70 straws can be used. 10. On application of load, the maximum load carrying

capacity of structure will be decided by jury. 11. Winner will be decided by the ratio of minimum self-

weight of structure to the maximum load carrying capacity. 12. Number of supports may vary as per the participants’

requirement. 13. A rectangular periphery of 15 cm* 15 cm will be given

within which participants will have to build their Column.

05 Brief Report It was great experience faced by engineering fellows and jury to include planning based event in tech-fest. Participants were very enthusiastic to represent their creativity by this wonderful platform. It was awesome involvement of participants towards dwelling unit planning with considering SUDA guideline as well as great contribution towards Landscape designing also. Fruitful effort was reflected in rising for this event when it was framed with the aids of building planning concept. Event managers and volunteers had cheered up the participants to complete the planning and designing within time bound. Prof.Hemaxi Khalasi, Asst. Prof., SASIT, Surat expert in town planning appointed as a jury had not only judging the participant but sharing their rich knowledge with participant without considering time limit. Event was started sharp at 11Am and successfully completed around 1:30 pm. Juries had personally interacted with individual group of participants and share their views regarding building planning with participant as a guide. As a final product overall event was fruitful and successful.
