Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) Pipes

Glass Reinforced Polyester pipes are manufactured from polyester resins and fibrous glass reinforcements and depending on the type with inorganic filler. The phenomenal design of GRP pipes is to provide the product with enhanced properties along with required margin of safety that will enable the pipes to perform adequately after an extended period of operation (more than 50 years) under typical conditions.

GRP or Glass Re-enforced Polyester pipes are widely being used in recent years when corrosion resistant pipes are required at reasonable costs. GRP can be used as a lining material for conventional pipes which are subject to corrosion. Fiber glass pipe can resist external and internal corrosion whether the corrosion mechanism is galvanic or chemical in nature.

Our present production line at 149, Sundar Industrial Estate, Lahore has the capacity to produce GRP pipes with diameters ranging from 300mm to 2600mm.

Fiber Glass Reinforced Pipes

Fiber Glass Reinforced Plastic Pipe is a matrix or composite of glass fiber, polyester resin and fillers. These pipes possess better strength durability high tensile strength low density and are virtually inert Fiber Glass pressure pipes are intended to be manufactured in diameters up to 2600mm and length up to 12m. These pipes are now being taken up for manufacture in Pakistan. Standard specifications have been formed in accordance to the available ASTM/AWWA standards.

Structure of GRP Pipes

In the FRP with high tensile strength, the fiberglass plays the role of reinforcement whiles the wear-resistance and pressure –resistance synthetic resin is used for bonding the fiber as the basic materials. Putting together, they commonly play the role of being in finished form and load carrier. The wall structure of the FRP pipe is normally consisting of two parts: Structure layer: make the continuous glass fiber woven of which is cross winded according to the design angle as the reinforcing frame. Make the synthetic resin as the bonding basic materials. Among them, the weight of fiberglass occupied about 65-70% & weight of resin about 30-35%. In order to strengthen the structural stiffness, the resin and silicon sand paste could be added in the middle layer of fiberglass filament winding layer. Inner liner-this is a layer of anti corrosion and leakage proof it is formed by two parts.

1. Interior surface layer-this is a layer directly contacts the medium and it is corrosion resistance and the first layer of leakage proof. The content of resin in this layer is about 90%.

2. The second interior layer-it is formed by chopped strand mat reinforcement and anti corrosion resin; the content of the gel coat is above 70% and about 2mm thickness. This is second protection to anti leakage of the medium.

GRP pipe is used for a system requiring highly non-corrosive and very strong stiffness. And, due to its structure, it has very long life time, almost forever. Basic material (resin) and supporting material (glass fiber) are used reasonably and this structure makes the lifetime very long with high stiffness. Especially, GRP pipe can be fabricated appropriately according to liquid and system by selecting proper resin and fabrication method for best service with the system.

• Liner Layer C-glass fiber is used so it has excellent non-corrosion property against chemical liquids. This layers remains in direct contact with the conveyed fluid passing thorough the pipes. Furthermore, liner makes the inner surface particularly smooth and chemical additives could be added as per requirement of end use for these pipes. Inner liner is composed of one glass veil and glass mat impregnated with resin to form the structure.

Page 4: GRP Pipes Profile

• Structural Layer The purpose of this layer is to make the pipe capable enough to resist the stresses due to design conditions (stresses due to internal or external pressures, flexural strengths due to external load etc.). Thickness of this layer depends upon the design conditions. E-glass fiber is used and it is supporting layer of GRP pipe with mechanical and physical stiffness.

• External Layer It protects GRP pipe from aging and deformation originated from environmental factor such as ultraviolet rays. This layer is composed of pure resin without glass reinforcements. It guarantees the outer layer to be well finished and free of protruding fibers.

Joints

GRP pipes are typically jointed through GRP coupling or hydraulic sealing for bell and spigot ends by means of one or two Elastomeric Gaskets (O-Rings), adjusted on the circumferential grooves after machining the spigot end of the pipes. Whereas, for plain end pipes, sealing is achieved by sleeve joints or chemical welding that assures the same strength and impermeability.

Flange jointing technique can be used as well to make connections with steel allowing easy assembling/ disassembling with other lines and structures. Customized requirements can be entertained on request.

GRP Pipes Fittings & Accessories

GRP accessories/fittings can be produced using the same material and standard approach that is being followed for other GRP pipe. The most intrinsic benefit of this system is to easily fabricate wide assortment of fittings according to the customized or standard requirements of the system.

Modifications and amendments could be made to these under mentioned accessories that would make them feasible to be implemented on any situation.

Merits of GRP Pipe ApplicationsGlass reinforced Polyester pipes represent the ideal solution for the abduction of any kind of water, chemicals, affluent and sewers, because they combine the advantage of corrosion resistance, typical of plastics, with a mechanical strength which can be compared with the steel one. Typical properties that result in advantages in G.R.P. pipes applications can be summarized as follows:

• Higher mechanical resistance due to the glass reinforcement.

• Corrosion resistance, both of the external wall and internal wall in contact with the conveyed fluid. No protections such as coating, painting or cathodic are needed. GRP pipes are resistant to nearly all chemicals even at much higher temperatures (up to 170 °C) than other plastic materials.

• Smoothness of the internal wall that minimizes

the head losses and avoids the formation of deposits on the other hand minimizes the slope.

• Very long life, virtually infinite, of the material which does not need maintaining.

• Absolute impermeability of pipes and joints both from external to internal and vice-versa.

• Low weight of pipes lengths that allows for the use of light laying and transport means.

• Length of sections larger than other materials ones.

• Easy installation procedures because laying of GRP pipes is a simple operation which can be done in short periods of time both above and below ground, since spigot and socket joints enable fast and reliable assembling.

• Workability of the material on sites employing simple equipment.

• Possibility of nesting of different diameters of pipe thus allowing additional saving in transport operations.

Page 13: GRP Pipes Profile

• Water supply pipes 100 - 2600 mm dia. From 25 bar to 10 bar according to dia, using vinylester, bisphenolic & isophthalic resin and bell and spigot joint with double 0-ring designed according to international standards (ASTM-AWWA). Low pressure pipes could be sand filled in order to reach a better stiffness and lower cost.

• Sewerage system 300-2600 mm dia. With pressure up to 6 bar isophthalic resin and bell and spigot joint with double O-ring. These pipes can be sand filled up to 60% with a substantial reduction in costs and improvement in stiffness, designed according to international standards (ASTM - AWWA)

GRP Pipe Installation

FRP pipes being light in weight can be easily loaded or unloaded by slings pliable stripes of ropes. A pipe can be lifted with only one support point or two support points placed about 4 meter a part. Excavation of trench and back filling of material is similar to that in the case of CI and MS pipes.

It is found out after having considerable experience that properly compacted granular materials are ideal for backfilling pipe, including GRP pipes. Despite this fact, in an effort to reduce the cost of installing pipes, the excavated trench soils are used as pipe zone backfill. Some burial limitations have to be taken care of at the time of installation of GRP pipes to avoid any unwanted circumstances.

Practically there are many different factors that could affect the installation of these pipes. Trench cross section terminology is shown in figure below:

Figure: Installation of GRP pipes

Page 15: GRP Pipes Profile

Installation types

There are two different types of buried installation are available for the engineer to consider. These factors during installation and constraints have to be carefully adopted by the engineers for proper completion of installation procedure.

Above Ground Installations

The design of an aboveground installation is highly dependent on the properties of the specific pipe used. Recognizing this, the engineers have developed very detailed aboveground installation instructions for GRP pipe, stiffness class (SN) 5000 or higher. These instructions cover cradle spacing and design, hold-down straps, allowable coupling rotation and other relevant information. For the use of GRP pipe on steep slopes (over 20 degrees), an above ground installation is generally recommended.

Underground Installations

GRP pipes with rubber O-rings or flanges can be used for joining spigot and bell end can easily be adopted for underground installation. For standard procedure and practices, tranches should be made properly to save the overheads of leakage and breakage of underground joints.

Sub-Aqueous Installations

GRP pipe and couplings, using the rubber sealing gaskets with marine harness lugs, are an excellent system choice for sub-aqueous installations. The outstanding internal and external corrosion resistance of these products, together with their light weight and ease of joining are very effectively utilized. The standard 12-meter length of pipe will reduce the number of underwater joints to be made.
