From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:

The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. (John 20.3)

In this time of “shelter-in-place” I am trying to retain as normal a schedule as is possible; for me this includes taking my day off on Mon-day. I am finding that within the typical pa-rameters of a day off I am doing some new things. (Well, I have to, because I am not able to do the activities that I would usually do on a day off such as go out to eat, go to an exercise class, visit my dad or my sister, go to a movie etc……) The need for a day off grows out of the original idea of the Sabbath, a day of rest and re-creation. In the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic we are all called to have our day of rest! Dealing with the anxieties and uncertainties of the vi-rus outbreak in the USA and its effect on our families is actually quite exhausting. Our ex-haustion might be physical from our work, emotional from our concerns about teaching and providing for our children, spiritual from wondering why God has left us to deal with this alone, or mental from living with all the unanswered questions. Be assured we all need rest! We hear today that the disciples are gathered on “the first day of the week.” We know this day as Sunday; it was the day after the Jew-ish Sabbath (our Saturday) which was con-sidered the 7th day of the week, the day on which God rested after creating the world. The first followers of Jesus discovered that Jesus was present among them when they began to gather weekly on Sunday to remem-ber Jesus’ dying and rising, to “Do this in memory of me” with a sacred meal, which we now call Eucharist. They found Jesus was fully present and active among them. The goal for our day of rest, our Lord’s Day, our Sabbath Rest, is to create the space where we too can encounter the Risen Lord active and present among us.

Now is the perfect time to examine what new thing we can do to encounter more deeply the marvelous work God does in Christ. Per-haps we can Cook an Easter Season dinner together. Put on a special shirt or dress or pants

just because it’s Sunday! Set a special Easter table with springtime

colored napkins. Pick some flowers/weeds from the yard

and make a table centerpiece. Have a family Zoom call or Google Chat

with cousins from around the world. Take a family walk or visit a nearby park

with a loved one. Sing a song, record a video, write a poem

about Easter. Pray a family rosary. Call grandma. Watch a spiritual or devotional movie on

TV. God’s new work of the Resurrection is un-folding all the time. When we rest we are able to see the new life around us. Let us be attentive for the grace of Easter blossoming in our lives!

God’s Mercy and Healing From Abortion Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. God’s greatest desire is to forgive us, pouring out His infinite mercy upon us so that we may be healed. Women and men alike who have been involved in an abortion may feel deep grief, guilt, anxiety, de-pression, anniversary reactions to the date of the abortion or what would have been the baby’s due date, broken relationships and a sense of aliena-tion from God and the Church. If this is you, we want you to know that your Church cares. Seek the Lord’s mercy and healing through the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation. Consider confidential, compassionate help from Project Rachel, a confi-dential Catholic ministry offering hope and healing to women and men hurting from past abortions. Select “Find Help” from the menu on HopeAfterA-bortion.org to find the diocesan ministry near you.

Watching Mass Online or on TV? Below is the prayer for making a

Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never per-mit me to be separated from You. Amen.
